12 Ways of Christmas - Wacky World Winter Customs

How good are the W4W boys at figuring out global customs for the holiday most often thought of as Christmas in this country?

1.) Starting off on the creepy cloven hoof of our favorite demonic spirit of the season, what European city is known as the home of the annual, world’s largest Krampus parade?

    a.) Berlin b.) Vienna c.) Prague d.) Frankfurt

It’s basically the freaky parade of hell. There’s also another event known as Krampuslauf (or Krampus run), where racers try to evade Krampus monsters positioned along the route.

2.) What Eastern European Country celebrates the Legend of The Christmas Spider, decorating their homes and trees with delicate strands to represent a spider web (that is supposedly the origin of tinsel)?

a.) Bulgaria b.) Poland c.) The Czech Republic d.) Ukraine

The legend is actually kind of sweet but also terrifying for anyone suffering from even the slightest arachnophobia. A poor widow did not have the money to decorate her home for her children so the spiders (multiple) living in her home decided to decorate for her. (Hey, poor widow, good housekeeping is FREE.)

3.) Speaking of Christmas trees, spider-related decor are not the only odd items hung in celebration. Germans traditionally have a particular not-really-thought-of-as-Christmassy item that they hide in the tree for a lucky kid to find. What is it?

    a.) a pickle b.) a corncob c.) a sausage d.) a potato

Yes, that quaint little bit of ancient German folk fun has caused Americans to shake their heads in amusement...for at least a 120 years or so. But it would make most Germans shake their heads in confusion,

Now, grab a beer and help us test the god hypothesis — because, while Erra (the Akkadian god of mayhem and plague) hasn’t struck us down yet, we are trying his patience!

    Shea’s Life Lesson

This week I learned that if you tuck one of pant legs into your sock; people expect a lot less of you.

    Jenn’s Actual Lesson

Did you know that mayhem god Erra had himself his very own epic poem? It dates from about the 8th century BCE and chronicles the insomniac god as he plots destruction for all mankind, and comes pretty close to succeeding. It was basically the Babylonian destruction myth, like the great flood or a Ragnorrak.

    Radiation is fun!

Most of you probably haven’t heard the tale of Alfred Carton Gilbert.

He was an American athlete, magician, toy-maker, business man, and giver of cancer.

Most famous of his inventions was the Erector Set. Perhaps most notable, however, was the 1950 Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab play-set for children.

Gilbert considered toys to be foundational in building a “solid American character” so many of his toys were educationally themed and lead lined… or, you know, whatever metal was cheaper.

So great was his toy-based patriotism that he was named the “man who saved Christmas” during WWI when he convinced the US Council of National Defense not to ban toy sales during Christmas… which was a thing for some reason.

Anyway, back on the glowing track.

The Atomic Energy Lab was one of many lab-based toys available at the time. Like lab toys now the kits would include everything you needed to do the fun-to-watch science in the hope that you’d later do the hard-to-math science as an adult. Best of all, it was the 1950’s and everything was alite with the glory of radiation!

The Atomic Lab, while short lived - it only sold for 1 year - was considered by many including Gilbert to be the companies best. The US Government particularly loved it as they thought it would aid public understanding of atomic energy and emphasize its constructive aspects - which at the time was much in need of PR rehabilitation.

The Lab contained a cloud chamber (or glass ball) that allowed one to watch alpha particles traveling at 12,000 mps, a spinthariscope showing the results of radioactive disintegration on a fluorescent screen, and an electroscope measuring the radioactivity of different substances in the set.

Quartz has been on Earth since the beginning of time and ancient civilizations have used crystals as protective talismans, peace offerings, and jewelry. Today, quartz makes up 20% of the Earth’s crust and is used in almost every kind of technology, including time keeping, electronics, information storage, and more. With such a versatile and useful material, it’s no wonder some people think it has more metaphysical properties.

From stage right enters, Marcel Joseph Vogel, a research scientist with IBM in the mid 20th century. Vogel made many scientific breakthroughs with luminescence, magnetics, and liquid crystal systems. At his funeral in 1991, a colleague was quoted saying "He made his mark because of the brilliance of his mind, his prolific ideas, and his seemingly limitless creativity." This was a very smart man.

Later in life, Vogel turned his attention to a study of subtle energies in plants, humans and crystals. Even going so far as claiming to have reproduced the "Backster effect" using plants as transducers for bio-energetic fields from the human mind, showing that they respond to human thought.  While watching crystals grow under a microscope, he noticed that their shape took the form of whatever he was thinking about, so he claimed. He hypothesized that these vibrations are the result of the constant assembling and disassembling of bonds between molecules. He also tested the metaphysical power of quartz crystal and proved that rocks can store thoughts similar to how tapes use magnetic energy to record sound, seems sound.

Before we can begin this week’s patron story, we need to watch a commercial. And by watch I mean listen. And by commercial I mean a non-show sponsored apocryphal soap-on-a-rope joke.

So the commercial is based on the life and bath-time of the 13th President of the United States, the not at all fake-named Millard Fillmore. Fun fact, he wasn’t a duck.

First of all, if like me, you’ve not heard of President Fillmore, here’s a brief overview. He is most famously know as being the first president to have running water in the White House. He was a Whig - a member of a British and Constitutional party that worked with the Democrats from 1830 to 1850 or so. Their logo was an owl in the traditional half-blue, half-red, with stars style. He was born in a log cabin. Was a career cloth maker. and had a third nipple he named "Professor Milkington” - ok, that last bit was an internet joke.

As far as Fillmore goes he was a relatively unremarkable president. He did some ok stuff, he did some terrible stuff like signing the Fugitive Slave Act. And then he died of a yee-oldie disease. This story is more concerned with his bathtub.

On the 28th of December, 1917, the journalist henry L. Mencken published an article in the New York Evening Mail titled "A Neglected Anniversary.” Full article linked in the notes (read the full text here). The article was about America’s adoption of the bathtub. Or rather, America’s slow adoption of the bathtub, which was believed to pose serious health risks until Mallard Fillmore popularized them by installing the first bathtub in the White House in 1850.

The first American bathtub was installed in Cincinnati in December of 1842 by one Adam Thompson. Prior to 1842, I guess people just jumped into lakes and loofa’d off with a small woodland creature. It was a brisk and bity time in personal hygiene.

The lavish water-box was a massive mahogany tub lined with lead. Adam proudly displayed the tub at a Christmas party and at least four of h...

    Shea’s Life Lesson

In honor of Shelley: This week I learned that in West Virginia you can’t substitute a ferret for a hunting dog… Well, legally that is. Oh and also in WV, it’s legal for a male to have sex with an animal as long as it does not exceed 40 lbs, so that ferret better watch out.

    Jenn’s Actual Lesson

Jenn’s out this week so in her honor I learned a silly state law from Georgia, apparently, You cannot keep a donkey in your bathtub. However, in Arizona it's okay to let your donkey stand in the tub, but they cannot sleep in the bathtub.

Mental Illness, Yee-Oldie Remedies, and you.

As you’ve heard on this show in the past, and I think you’re about to hear from Shea, being afflicted in any way back in the day probably meant more trouble from the cure than the cause. Unless you were rich, then gout wasn’t a disease so much as an indication of your wealth… A far cry from previous cultures identifiers of wealth, like being clean or wearing money.

The usual suspects like leprosy or cheese-ankle were easy to diagnose. The person had a festering gross and were given a life-time prescription for a hut in the leper colony. If you were a person of standing who could pay to have your illness treated you were probably bled, given bird-based footwear, or in the unfortunate eventuality that you have a vagina, drugged, shamed, and probably murdered for hysteria.

Mental illnesses however, were often treated on a case-by-case bases. For example, if your wife is exhibiting symptoms of hysteria — the only thing women ever got sick with before modern medicine streamlined and vouled-up the process of ignoring them — you were probably afflicted with a uterus-moving demon which requires a healthy dose of lognum and some dick. If, however, you were hearing voices and a man, the diagnoses was somewhat simpler. Clearly you had a bad case of possession and without the life-savi...

    Vulgarity for Charity

    What is it?

Vulgarity for Charity is an annual charity drive jointly produced by Puzzle in a Thunderstorm and Cognitive Dissonance podcasts. The collaborators on CItation Needed.

    When is it?

The charity drive runs from November 1st through Thanksgiving, November 28th, 2019.

    What charity does it benefit?

Modest Needs (https://www.modestneeds.org), a tax-exempt charity that gives emergency grants to low-income workers who are at risk of slipping into poverty and for whom no other source of immediate help is available.

    How does it work?

During the drive, donors that give $50.00 or more to Modest Needs can send a copy of their donation receipt to [email protected] with a request for a hilarious and outrageous roast. The donor can request anyone or anything to be roasted and the podcast crew will, over several podcast episodes, conduct these roasts. [Please keep in mind that if the person or thing is not famous then the donor should also send an image and a short description so they can get a proper roast.]

    What’s the goal?

Last year we raised over $75,000.00 and an anonymous donor donated $50,000. This year we hope that this drive will generate $100,000.00 worth of donations for Modest Needs. An anonymous donor has pledged to match all funds up to $100,000.00 for the duration of the drive, so every dollar donated is worth double. We could reach $200,000.00!

What can you do to help?

Make a donation to Modest Needs during Vulgarity for Charity. If you cannot donate, share the word within your social networks and communities.

Pinyan, wth his friends James Michael Tait, a truck driver, and another man smart enough to keep his name out of all of this had a side business producing and selling movies.

Pinyan, often the star of the show, worked opposite “Mr. Hands.”

It should be noted that Mr. Hands is a horse. With a massive horse boner.

In 1970s there was a call in Washington to repeal laws regarding some kinds of sex. Unfortunately, they’d all been listed together.

In Washington State, a law was repealed on July 1, 1976, that had said that

Every person who shall carnally know in any manner any animal or bird, or who shall carnally know any male or female person by the anus or with the mouth or tongue; or who shall voluntarily submit to such knowledge; or who shall attempt sexual intercourse with a dead body, shall be guilty of sodomy ...

    — 9.79.100 of the 1974 Revised Code of Washington

    Hurray blowjobs! Boo horse anal!

So, if you’re at all literate, you caught the bit were removing this law effectively made legal beastiality.

At some point after leaving his wife and kids Pinyan had a motorcycle accident which left him unable to feel certain sensations. Like, apparently, among those things he couldn’t feel were anal fisting - don’t google that - and receptive anal sex with h...

Have you guys tried this? I picked one up today at my local beer store. It's from Great Divide Brewing in Denver. The hop profile is a bit more bitter than you usually find in a stout, but it definitely helps balance out the malts and alcohol.

In preparation for the release of Terminator: Dark Fate, I've decided to do my best to prevent Judgement Day and scoured the internet for ways to help our would-be robot overlords hate us just a little bit less.

    It did not go well.

The news is full of stories like, as you may recall an earlier episode, the tragic story of HitchBOT. The autonomous robot designed to peacefully hitch hike its way across America? Well, it got murdered. It managed to cross Canada but when it went south into Philadelphia to hike back, it's remains were found strewn across the interstate. It had been murdered because... fuck it why not?

Obviously some of the robots have seen horrors, but surely that's not the norm, eh?

Initially, I thought the best place to start would be service bots. For what machine would be less inclined to exterminate us than those designed to help? right?... Wrong. As Japan does it's best to make robot caregivers for the elderly, we've put our service bots to use Stateside by making them pick up shit. Like the Tinki drone, that's meant to fly around and use its impressive array of AI abilities to spot, pick up, and carry away dog crap. Literally. It’s a quadro-crapper-copter.

123tinki's fleet of robots have already collected an astounding 1.3 billion turds since their public release in the UK. Making them almost as full of crap as Brexiters. Skynet is obviously going to turn this bullshit detection system against us... https://123tinki.com/nl-nl/dogdrones-en

Perhaps parents at Stanford’s Shopping Center in Palo Alto forgot to change their baby's nappy since a securioty robot deciced the best way to serve and protect was to try to murder a kid. presumably, so other villians couldn't. While shopping, the mall's automated security bot knocked down, then ran over, an 18-month old toddler. Weighing in at over 300-unforgiving pounds the machine quickly flattened the child. Fortunately, SkyNet's "just run'em over" initiative isn't out of beta yet and the kid lived and will go on to join his parent's efforts to further infuriate the robots by suing the hapless machine.

Did you know a construction site near Florida State University uncovered the remains of a toddler dating from about 7,000 years ago? She was buried in a woven grass blanket and had several small toys and dolls included in her shroud.

Panel, this is a simple guess-per-host quiz. I’ll read 4 items and what they do, and you have to decide if this is a “real” haunted or cursed object that’s actually in the world or a bit of nonsense made up by the internet.

    Question One

    * Myrtles Plantation Mirror: Apparently the mirror contains the spirit of a dead plantation girl who can you sometimes see hiding behind your own reflection!
    * The After-Image Mirror: a cursed mirror said to show you visions of recently transpired tragedies when used by candlelight.
    * The Myka Glasses: A pair of mirrored glasses cursed to reflect a vision of a person’s true nature back at them! Great for interrogations or Dorian Grey!
    * Sargon (not that one) The Great’s Mirror: A reflective metal “mirror” said to be from Sumerian origin that will blind anyone who looks at it when reflecting the light of the solstice sun!

    That’s right, it’s #1!

The Myrtles Plantation mirror comes from one of the “most haunted places in the world.” The mirror was added to the home in 1980 because apparently it wasn’t haunted enough already. The mirror is said to contain the spirits of Sara Woodruff and her children who were poised by a slave named Chloe. As the legend goes when someone dies in your house you should cover all the mirrors so the stupid spirits of stupidity don’t get stuck in them. Unfortunately, for Clark, they covered all but this one and now she and her daughters are forever stuck in a mirror like Timelord mayflies.

    Question Two

    * Bed and Breakfast Portrait: A portrait of the interior of a sitting room. Owners of the painting report that pillows on the couches, books on the shelves, or other smaller details in the painting will change to match the room in which the painting is housed.
    * Henry Fuseli’s The Nightmare: Oil on canvas, 1781, by Anglo-Swiss artist Henry Fuseli, the painting is long rumored to give its owners horrific nightmares, driving them to madness,
