"The Young Die Good" - CBS Radio Mystery Theater - July 4, 1974

Today is the 138th birthday of the author Franz Kafka. It should be of no surprise to frequent readers here that I find his dark hopeless hope so truthful and accurate, that I often think of him randomly throughout the day. Most recently while I was brushing my teeth, I thought of this quote. “The meaning of life is that it stops” on the surface does seem dark and hopeless, but it is the truth. So what are you going to do about it? What are you going to do with the undetermined, unidentified about of time you have? That is the glimmer of hope in the darkness. The world is a better place because he was in it and still feels the loss that he has left.
"The Secret Life of Bobby Deland" - CBS Radio Mystery Theater - July 3, 1974

Today is the 96th birthday of the Civil Rights Activist Medgar Evers. He paid the ultimate price for his conviction. He was memorialized by prominent authors including James Baldwin and Margaret Walker. In 1969, Medgar Evers College was established in Brooklyn, the same year a community pool in Seattle was named after him. In Jackson, Mississippi, he has a statue, an airport, and in nearby Fayette, his brother was their first African-American mayor (1969). In 2011, the USNS Medgar Evers was christened in his honor. In 2013, Alcorn State University erected a statue and was the subject of a tribute at Arlington National Cemetery. High ranking elected and military officials were in attendance. The world is a better place because he was in it and still feels the loss that he has left.
Today is the 70th birthday of the activist Sylvia Rivera. Every single person waving a rainbow flag last month owes her a debt of gratitude. It is because of her relentless fight to be seen and heard that we have the freedoms and privileges that we have. Her bravery created your comfort. The world is a better place because she was in it and still feels the loss that she has left.
Today is the 105th birthday of one of the longest living actors/actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood and the longest living actor from the film Gone With The Wind: Olivia de Havilland. The world is a better place because she was in it and still feels the loss that she has left.

Today is the 76th birthday of the singer/actor/rebel/badass Debbie Harry. Blondie’s album Parallel Lines is still one of my very favorite albums to this day. I listened to it the other day and then listened to their very new album and loved it all the same. The world is a better place because she is in it.
Sixty-two years ago today the film North by Northwest premiered at the United Artists Theatre in Chicago. Exactly how you are not supposed to have a favorite child, you are also not supposed to have a favorite Hitchcock film, but if we are sitting next to each other in a dark theater and no one could hear me and I will swear on Thelma Ritter’s grave I never said it, I might just whisper “this is my favorite.” Then again, the same could be said if we were watching Rear Window, or The Trouble With Harry, or Lifeboat, or, or, or…
