Hope in the Waiting - Day 16- When Everyone Else Gets Their Miracle
Matthew 11:6 “And blessed is he who takes no offense at me.”
This is a tiny sentence in a great big bible. You may have heard it many times before and not even noticed it because it is so small. Also, you may have heard it and not understood what it meant. This has definitely happened to me before. I have read something, and for one reason or another I did not understand what it meant. Sometimes I will look at the footnotes and will get a better understanding of what the statement meant. To be honest, I am not sure if I heard this verse before or not. I know that I definitely did not understand what it meant or take any notice of it. That is, until I read about it in that book I keep talking about, The Circle Maker by Mark Batterson. You really must read that book; it is so good! Anyway, as soon as I heard about what this verse meant, I knew I wanted to share it with people because I had never thought of it before, and I know it is something that we can all do. In the book, Mark talks about this couple he knows who are prayer warriors or prayer giants. You know the kind of people I am talking about, right? The people who seem to have a direct line to God. All of their prayers seem to get answered. My mom and dad are prayer warriors. They have had so many answered prayers and witnessed numerous miracles. If you know my parents, they are the first people you call when you are in need of prayers.
Mark talked about how the couple’s prayers for others were often answered; however, prayers for their own lives went unanswered. He said they took a leap of faith and went into the world of filmmaking, and they lost their life savings because the financial backing promised to them never came through. They lost their home in a fire. They lost three out of four parents in four years. And a rare genetic condition has taken a
toll physically, emotionally, and financially. It seemed like God was answering everyone else’s prayers, except their own. Have you ever felt this way? Have you ever felt like God was answering the prayers of everyone around you, but yours were going unheard for some reason? This couple said there had been moments when they have been tempted to throw in the towel, but the promise above has kept them
going. “And Blessed is he who takes no offense to me.” Here is the context of that promise, as Mark Batterson explains it in his book The Circle Maker: Jesus is doing miracles right and left. He is healing diseases, driving out demons, and restoring sight to the blind, but John the Baptist misses the miracle train. It seems like Jesus is rescuing everybody except His most faithful follower, who is in prison. And John is his cousin, nonetheless. It seems like Jesus could have, and maybe should have, organized a rescue operation and busted him out before he was beheaded. Instead, He sent a message via John's disciples. He tells them to tell John about all the miracles He is doing, and then He asks them to relay this promise: "Blessed is the
one who is not offended by me.”
I had never thought of this before. I had never thought about how John the Baptist might have felt seeing his cousin performing miracles all around him and yet he was stuck in jail. I wonder if he did feel offended? My first instinct is to say that he didn’t because he seemed like he was so close to God, and I think we tend to put anyone who we think is that close to God on a pedestal. We think that because they were
devoted to God that they have it all together and that following God and His ways comes easy to them. When I start to think like this, I need to remind myself that they are human and we all struggle with our thoughts and actions. I don’t know if John the Baptist felt offended by Christ or not. I do know that this is a completely normal human response. If you are feeling offended because God is answering the prayers of all those around you and not yours, please know that this is completely normal and understandable. We can be happy for others and sad for ourselves at the same time. I know I may keep mentioning that you can feel two things at the same time, but that is because I keep talking to so many people who are feeling guilty for being upset about something because they should be feeling grateful. Or, they feel guilty because they should be feeling happy that their friend just got pregnant, but they feel sad that they have not gotten pregnant yet. You don’t have to feel guilty about your feelings. It is ok to have two competing emotions at the same time. It is not just ok, it is completely normal. I wanted to share this verse because I know some people who have been feeling offended by God lately. They are wondering why everyone else seems to be more favored or more deserving. If this is you, I hope you take comfort in this passage. “Blessed is the one who is not offended by me.” God does not favor others more than you. God is a mystery. We don’t know why He does what He does. We know He has a plan for our lives, and we also know He is not super forthcoming with what that plan is. He is more of a “reveal one step at a time” God. One thing we know for sure is that He keeps His promises. So, if God is not answering your prayers, it doesn’t mean that He doesn’t care for you as much as others. You know Jesus had to have cared for His cousin. You know God had to have been proud of His faithful servant John, who lived in the woods and baptized people and preached repentance. And yet, John the Baptist was beheaded. God loves you! He loves each one of His children equally and more than we could ever imagine. If your prayers aren’t being answered, I know it is hard. I know it is hard to see others receive their miracles while you are still waiting. I know it may feel like you are never going to receive your answers. Please don’t give up asking. Please don’t give up expecting them to be answered. Try to rely on this promise that you are Blessed. My hope is this shift in perspective will help you not throw in the towel. Instead of thinking God must not like you or favor you because your prayers aren’t being answered, you can know that you are blessed. You can know that you are in good company.
Dear Heavenly Father, I ask that you bless everyone listening to this episode today. Lord, we ask that you help us not to be offended by you. We thank you for all the miracles you're doing in the world today and all the prayers that you have answered. Lord, we don't know why our prayers may be going unanswered, and that is really difficult for us. Lord, we ask that you help us with this. If our prayers haven't been answered yet, we pray that you give us the perseverance to keep asking and not to give up. We ask that you give us wisdom and clarity if you want us to stop asking for something. As with Paul, when he asked for you to heal the thorn in his side and you told him your grace was sufficient for him. If we are asking for something that we don't need or you don't want us to have, please take that desire from us. Lord, we are so thankful for all you are doing in the world today. Please help us to be happy for others when you answer their prayers. Please help us to not be offended by this and to know in the depths of our hearts that you love us and you have a wonderful plan for our lives. Lord, we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’ holy name. Amen!
Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I look forward to meeting you here again on Monday. Remember, Jesus loves you just as you are, and so do I! Have a blessed day!

Hope in the Waiting - Day 15 - How Do I Know Whether to Keep Asking or Let Go?
Luke 18:1-8 “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. “He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!” And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
I love this parable because it reminds us to keep asking. Jesus is telling us that if we want something bad enough, all we have to do is keep asking for it, and it will be given to us. I wanted to address the question, “How do I know whether to keep asking or let it go?” Because I think it is something many people struggle with. I have been asked this question many times and usually people cite verse 2 Corinthians 12:8-9 “Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in your weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
People say that Paul asked three times and then God told him that His grace was sufficient for him, so Paul stopped asking. I understand why we might think that if we ask God a few times and we don’t get what we asked for, then maybe God wants us to just live with it. I understand that redemptive suffering is real and that others can be healed through our suffering. I do think God uses our suffering. However, I also believe that God wants to heal us. I believe He doesn’t like to see His children suffering. Besides the parable about the persistent widow, there is another parable about asking your neighbor for food. This parable is in Luke 11:5-13. In this parable, Jesus says, “I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.” The next paragraph says, “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. If a son asks for [a]bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
Jesus is telling us through these parables that we need to keep asking. We need to not grow weary of asking. That we will get what we want if we just keep asking. As to how we know whether to keep asking or to let it go, this I think is simple. Keep asking unless you get word from the Lord that you should stop. In 2 Corinthians, Paul heard the Lord say that His grace was sufficient for Him. If you hear this from the Lord, or if you feel like the Lord is telling you to stop asking, then listen to the Lord. However, anything short of the Lord telling you to stop, I say keep asking. It is not just in the parables that the Lord tells us to keep asking. He also tells us this in verses like Matthew 7:7-8, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
If you have been waiting for an answer for a long time, then it makes sense why you would feel as if it might be time to throw in the towel. It is easy to think that if God wanted to answer your prayer, or give you the healing, he would have done it by now. I get it. I have had to wait a really long time for the answers to some of my prayers. And for others, I am still waiting for the answers. However, those are just lies from the enemy. The enemy is whispering these lies. He is telling us that God would have healed us already if He wanted to. He tells us that God is tired of us asking for the same thing over and over again. He is telling us these lies because He knows we are tired of asking. He knows when we are tired, we are vulnerable to his lies. The devil is a liar!
God does not want you to stop asking. Think of the story of the hemorrhaging woman. She was bleeding for 12 years. She tried everything she could think of. She had probably prayed to the Lord a million times in those 1e years, and yet He did eventually heal her. She didn’t give up, and He rewarded her faith. He will do the same for you. He will answer your prayers. He will heal you or your loved one. He will give you the provisions you need, the new job you are looking for. Whatever it is that you are praying for, keep asking, keep being persistent, and the Lord will answer your prayers!
Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode. I ask that you help us to never give up asking. I ask you to help give us the perseverance we need to keep asking even when we get tired. I ask that you give us the strength to keep coming to you even when it feels like you aren’t listening. I ask that you help us to keep hoping and believing that even though we have been asking for a long time, you want us to keep asking and that you will answer our prayers in your timing. Help us, Lord! Help us be like the persistent widow. We love you, Lord, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’ holy name. Amen!
Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus! I look forward to meeting you here again tomorrow. Remember, Jesus loves you just as you are, and so do I! Have a blessed day!

Hope in the Waiting - Day 14 - What If God Seems Silent
Isaiah 49:14-16 “But Zion said, ‘The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.” Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palm of my hands; your walls are ever before me.”
I like this verse because it reminds us that even though we might feel like God has forgotten us sometimes, He will never forget us. That promise is written right here in Scripture. I also like it because it helps us to know we are not alone when we feel like God has forgotten us. If Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me,” after all God did for them, then we don’t have to feel bad when we feel it. However, just because we are not alone in this feeling doesn’t mean it is true.
When we are struggling. When we are asking God for answers to some pretty big prayers and yet we are not seeing the answers, we can start to feel like God has forsaken us or has forgotten us. Have you ever felt this way before? Have you ever felt like your prayers are falling on deaf ears? You are in good company. Plenty of people who were highly favored by the Lord have felt forgotten by him at one time or another. We started this series off with Psalm 13:1-2, which says, “How long, Lord? Will you utterly forget me? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I carry sorrow in my soul, grief in my heart day after day? How long will my enemy triumph over me?” The author of most of the Psalms is thought to be King David. David was favored by the Lord, and yet he still questioned if the Lord had forgotten about him.
If someone who was so sure God was on his side that he went up against a giant when he was just a kid with nothing but three stones and a slingshot can question if God has forgotten him, then we don’t have to feel bad for thinking He might have forgotten us. But today’s devotional isn’t about that. Today we are looking at what we can do if God seems silent. Is this how you are feeling right now? Are you feeling as if you are turning to the Lord and yet He is silent? You are talking to Him, but He is not talking to you? If so, you are not alone in this either. I am hearing this is from a lot of people I am praying with right now. They are asking the Lord for answers; they are asking for healing; they are asking for strength; they are asking, and yet they feel like the Lord is not talking. They feel as though He is just quiet. What do we do when this happens?
There are a couple of things that come to mind when I hear that God is not talking. First, are you truly listening? I used to ask God all sorts of questions and pray for all sorts of things, and I never heard any answers. Then one day I felt as if God said, “You ask the questions, but then you go about your day, and you don’t actually wait and listen for any answers.” This was true. I did not know that I could listen and God would talk to me. I didn’t know that a two-way conversation with God was possible. If this is you, I want you to know that it is possible to hear God. It won’t always be words, but it could be a thought that comes into your mind, a quiet voice, a feeling, an image, a vision, a sense, an answer, a scripture verse. God communicates in a variety of ways, and if we know this, we can start to give Him time to communicate with us.
If you are asking the Lord for answers but not stopping to listen for those answers, I want to challenge you to stop today, even if it is just for five minutes, and sit and listen for the Lord. Be open to however He wants to communicate with you. Don’t just dismiss a thought or a word because you assume it is yourself saying it. The voice we often hear sounds like our own voice, but if you ask the Lord a question and you “hear” an answer or get a sense or a thought, trust that it is the Lord talking.
If you are taking the time to sit in silence and listen for the Lord and you still aren’t hearing anything, that doesn’t mean that He is not talking. Sometimes we will go through periods when we show up for prayer, and yet we don’t hear from the Lord. This can be a time when the Lord is stretching us. I have heard it described as the Lord testing to see if we will still show up even when we aren’t receiving the consolation we normally receive from prayer. It can be hard to show up and pray and yet feel nothing time and time again.
Everyone can go through periods where our prayers seem fruitful, and we feel like the Lord is with us, and He hears us, and then there can be times when our prayers feel like they are falling on deaf ears. God always hears our prayers. They never fall on deaf ears. He is not only hearing our prayers, but He is also working on answering them as well. We don’t have to feel God’s presence for him to be with us. We don’t have to hear God for Him to be working in our situation.
If God seems silent, it’s ok; He is still working in your situation. Trust that He never leaves your side. If you want to hear the Lord and you haven’t tried listening before, I encourage you to start listening and see what you hear, feel, or see. If you have been listening and you still aren’t hearing anything, I want to encourage you to keep listening. Keep showing up and giving the Lord your time, and just sit in the silence. God has told our prayer group over and over again that it is in the silence where He comes in to heal us. Are we sitting with the Lord in silence and giving Him time to come in and heal us?
Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless each person listening to this episode today. I ask you to help us hear you. I ask that you put on our hearts a desire to sit in silence with you and listen to what you want to share with us. I ask that you give us a desire to sit in silence and allow you to come in and heal our hearts and minds. I ask that you help us to not get discouraged if we are listening and we don’t hear you. I ask that you help us to keep hoping even when it feels like you are silent or that you have forgotten us. Help us to remember your promise in today’s scripture that you will not forget us! And that you have engraved us on the palm of your hands. We love you so much, Lord, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’s holy name. Amen.
Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Hope in the Waiting - Day 13 - Waiting Is Not Wasted Time
Isaiah 40:31 “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.”
This is a great verse. I love the imagery of soaring on eagles’ wings and running and not growing weary. I would love to tell you that if you hope in the Lord, you will never get tired and will always feel strong. That you will run and not grow weary. However, that hasn’t been my experience. I know several people who have been trusting in the Lord for some pretty big things, and yet they feel very weary. They have tried to be strong, but they don’t feel very strong. They have run the race, but they do feel faint.
When I think of eagles soaring above the skies, I think of how easy and effortless it looks. It looks like they are just gliding through life without a care in the world. What just came to mind for me is another verse: Matthew 6:26: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” I think we can hear that verse and think that if we just didn’t worry, all would be fine. I think life would be easier if we could figure out how to worry less. If we could figure out how to trust in the Lord, knowing He would take care of everything.
However, God made us differently than he made birds. Our thinking and feelings are much more complex than birds’. I don’t think God told us this parable so we would beat ourselves up for worrying. I think He told it to us so that we would know that if He is taking care of the birds in the sky, then He will take care of you and me even more. God created us. He loves us more than we can imagine, and He is listening to every cry, every prayer, every time we yell out to Him. He hears us! He hears you! He will answer your prayers. That is a fact. It may not always be like you want Him to, but He will answer them. He tells us this in every way He possibly can in the Bible.
So, let’s get back to today’s verse. What does it mean when it says, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength?” I know you may feel like you are hoping in the Lord, but your strength isn't being renewed. However, I would point out that the fact that you can get out of bed when you didn’t want to, or when you didn’t feel like you could, shows that God is giving you strength. During this whole time of waiting, have you ever wondered how you had the strength to do the things you have done? You might not have done everything you feel you should have, but I bet you are doing more than you think. God is giving you the strength to do the things you need to do.
When I have told people what it was like back when Tony and I were struggling with each other and also with how to raise our boys, they have said things like, “I don’t know how you did it” or “I don’t know how you kept moving forward.” I know it was only through the grace of God. I don’t say that as a cliché or something that sounds nice. I truly know that if God had not given me the strength to get up each day, I am not sure I would have. If God had not given me the perseverance to call psychiatrist after psychiatrist just to get the help we needed, I would not have been able to do it. It was God who kept me going when one of my kids was in the hospital, kicked out of school, or was being abusive.
I know you feel like you don’t have any strength, but I guarantee you would have even less if God were not there holding you up. Holding you together. I also think this verse is not just talking about strength in the moment. It is also talking about the strength you have after you have gone through what you are going through. It is easy to say I trust in the Lord when everything is going well, and I don’t really have to trust in the Lord. However, when you have been through something like what you are going through right now, then the next time you run into something, you will have more strength to say that you trust in the Lord, and you will mean it because He will have shown you that He always comes through.
I think we often think that all this waiting we are doing is for nothing. That we are just wasting time waiting until God gets around to answering our prayers. I assure you that is not the case. God is not just wasting time. He is the Father of time, and He did not give us time to waste it. If your answer to your prayer is taking longer than you would like, it is not because God is sitting around twiddling His thumbs. God is working right now in your situation. I wish I could tell you why it is taking so long. I can’t. I wish I knew why I had to go through so many of the things I did, and I really wish I knew why my kids are still going through so much. I can’t. What I do know is that I would not be the woman, the mom, the wife, the daughter, the friend, the Catholic that I am today without those trials. I know I would not have the faith or the trust that I have today if I hadn’t seen first hand God showing up and taking care of things eventually. It rarely happened on my timeline, and even when I thought it did, we took a few steps backward. However, He always came through in big ways and small ways.
This time is not being wasted. Your wait is not a waste. I know it is hard to see that. I get it; I have been where you are. I am still where you are for some of my prayers. I am also praying with so many who are waiting for the answers to their prayers, and I wonder why it hasn’t happened yet right alongside them. I know God can do all things, and so I wonder why He hasn’t answered their prayers yet. Why He hasn’t healed them. Why everything seems to be taking so long. We are actually going to go a bit deeper into these questions in the next two episodes. For today, I just want you to know that God is giving you strength, even if you can’t feel it, and that this waiting time is not wasted. God is with you through all of it, and He hears every word you say to Him!
Dear Heavenly Father, please bless all those listening to this episode. Lord, we love you, and we want to wait on your answers; please help us. We thank you for the strength you are giving us, and we ask you for more, Lord! Help us to see all the ways you are giving us strength. Help us to continue to trust and hope that the answers and the healing are coming. We believe, Lord; help our unbelief. Help remind us when we grow weary and tired of fighting that this time is not wasted and that you will answer our prayers. We love you, Lord, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’s holy name. Amen!

Hope in the Waiting - Day 12 - How Do I Keep Hoping After Years of Waiting?
Romans 4:18-21 “In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations; as he had been told, “So shall your descendants be.” He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead because he was about a hundred years old, or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.”
There is so much in these four short verses. It begins with, “In hope he believed against hope that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told.” I wish we could believe in hope against all hope. We have all been in one situation or another when it looked like it wasn’t going to work out. We have all been in a situation where what we wanted seemed to be against all hope. Think back to a time when all hope was lost. Can you think of a time when you were telling yourself, or maybe others were telling you that there was no hope? This is the type of situation Abraham was living. God told him he would be the father of all nations, and yet he was 75 years old, which was pretty old in that day and age, and he didn’t have any children. Abraham had plenty of reasons to doubt what he was told.
I like how the verse says his faith did not weaken when he considered his own body, “which was as good as dead because he was a hundred years old.” The author of this section is even saying that Abraham was as good as dead. According to several sources I found online, Abraham was 75 years old when God promised he would be the father of nations and his descendants would be like the stars. Then he was 100 years old when Isaac was born. Can you imagine waiting 25 years for a promise from God? Maybe you can. Maybe you have been waiting 25 years to meet your future spouse; maybe you have been waiting 25 years to have children; maybe you have been waiting 25 years for your child or your spouse to become sober or get off all drugs. If you have been waiting a really long time for your dream to come true, or a promise to come true, look to Abraham for guidance.
I want to have the faith that Abraham had. I want to have a faith that believes in hope, against all hope. I want to stand firm in my faith and not have it weaken when I see all that is up against me. I want to have total trust as Abraham had. It says in this verse, “No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God.” How amazing would it be if our trust was so great that nothing could make us waver in it? I have had this type of trust before. When my niece was born early, I believed that God was not going to take her from us. I believed in hope, against all hope, that she would live. The doctors told us she would not, and we continued to hope and believe in God. The nurses told us that she would not make it, and we believed and trusted God against all hope. They told us to say goodbye, and we decided to praise God instead, and we kept trusting, kept hoping, and kept believing that our God could do anything, and He did.
This believing in Hope for us lasted months, months that seemed like years, but it was still months. I don’t think I have ever waited for something for 25 years. Actually, I did wait for a long time for things to get better in my family with my husband and with my children. It was not 25 years, but it was at least 15 or so. I trusted that God would work it all for our good; I trusted that God was in control and that He was there with us through all of it. I believe I was given this kind of trust because I asked for it, because I looked for it. I don’t believe I have this trust in God because I am special; I don’t think I am just lucky; I think God gives us what we ask for.
Have you been intentional in asking God for what you need, or giving Him permission to give you all that He thinks you need? God tells us in Matthew 7:7-8, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Ask God for what you want. Ask Him for a deeper faith, ask Him for a deeper trust, ask Him for more strength, ask Him for whatever you need, and then praise Him when He gives it to you. I knew I needed more of God in my life when I was facing the things I was facing. I knew I couldn’t do it on my own, and I knew He was the only way we would all make it through. I know God can do amazing things, and so I decided I wasn’t going to be afraid to ask for them. I wasn’t going to be afraid to seek Him and His gifts more. He never looks at us like we are greedy when we are seeking His gifts. He wants to give them to us. His gifts only bring us closer to Him and help us spread His word. Nothing bad comes from the gifts of the Lord. We don’t have to be afraid to ask for them; He loves when we seek Him and desire Him.
Sometimes I feel insecure talking about my faith in God because I feel as though others will think I am bragging or think I am exaggerating. I feel the Lord has been telling me lately to talk about it more, to not hold back because if others see the kind of faith that is possible, they can search for it too. The kind of faith that Abraham had is not impossible. The faith that Daniel had in the lion’s den is not impossible. If you want to have a faith like this, the first step is to ask for it and to keep asking until you get it. We heard in Luke 18:1-8 about the parable of the persistent widow. God likes it when we ask Him for something over and over again. That is one way He knows how much we want it. The next thing to do is to seek it. Ask God what you need to do and then follow His promptings. Increased Faith is a gift from God. There are things you can do and should do, such as follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit, but ultimately, it is a gift from God. I have a sticky note right by my computer that reminds me to keep asking God for His gifts. That sticky note says, “It’s not that I am greedy; it’s that I am needy.” I need all that God has to give, especially if I want to become more like Him, especially if I want to spread His love all over the world. If you want the trust, faith, and hope that is talked about in this verse above, then the first step is easy: just ask for it.
I just want to take a minute to point out the last sentence in this verse: “No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.” The part of this line that I want to highlight is when it says, “but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.” Abraham grew strong in his faith as he gave Glory to God. How often are you giving Glory to God? Are you doing it even when you aren’t seeing the answers to your prayers? Are you doing it even when you have been waiting a really long time? I think we can all learn a lot from these few verses, and one thing for sure is that his faith grew strong as he gave Glory to God. If his faith can grow by doing that, so can ours. What if we all gave a little more glory to God this week and this month? What if we praise him more and more and see what that leads to? I once heard a quote that I will never forget. I think it was Joyce Meyer who said it, but I can’t be 100% certain. The quote is, “If you complain, you remain; if you praise, you will be raised.” I truly believe that part of the reason my faith in the Lord is so strong is that I love praise music and I love gratitude. Those two combined have been huge in helping me grow in faith. Give it a try, and see if you love it as much as I do!
Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, you are amazing, and we want to trust as Abraham trusted. We want to have faith and hope as he had. We want to believe in hope against all hope. We want to be unwavering in our faith, even when we look at all that seems to be against us. We want to wait faithfully, even if it takes 25 years for you to fulfill that promise you made to us. We love you, Lord, and we are so grateful for you. We are grateful you answer when we ask, we find when we seek, and that you open doors when we knock. You are truly powerful, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’ holy name. Amen!
Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I look forward to meeting you here again tomorrow. Remember, Jesus loves you, and so do I! Have a blessed day!

Hope in the Waiting - Day 11 - Obeying God Before It Makes Sense
Hebrews 11:7 “By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.”
My friend Louise was leading a prayer group on Thursday, and she did a teaching on Hebrews 11. As she was talking, I felt like the Holy Spirit was showing me several different things in this chapter. I felt like this would be a good chapter to spend some time in as it shows several different examples of faith in several different circumstances. Each day this week I will take a different verse from this chapter, and we will look at the circumstances the people find themselves in and how their faith grows because of these circumstances.
In today’s verse we have Noah. In case you are listening to this and you don’t know the story of Noah, let me take a minute to explain. The people who lived when Noah lived were not God-fearing people. They worshipped other gods, they participated in child sacrifice, and were a perverse nation. God wanted to destroy the earth and start over again. However, there was one righteous family. Noah & his wife had a few sons. God asked Noah to build an ark that would keep his family safe from the flood that he intended to send. He gave his very specific directions and dimensions for this ark. He wanted Noah to build an ark that would not only keep his family safe, but he also wanted him to bring on board at least one female and one male of every land animal on earth.
At the time that God told Noah this, the place where Noah lived had not gotten rain in a very long time. There was no earthly reason why Noah would need to build an ark. It definitely didn’t make sense to him or to his family. However, Noah built the ark and saved his family and all the animals. The verse above says, “By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family.” That first part is the first kind of example I want to talk to you about this week. It says, “By faith, when warned about things not yet seen.” When have you been asked to have this type of faith? When has God warned you about something that was coming but you didn’t see it yet? When has he asked you to do something and yet you really don’t understand why? Has this happened to you before? Have you felt like God wanted you to do something and yet it didn’t seem to make any sense to you?
This can happen to us in big ways and small ways. You might feel like God is asking you to call someone or pray for someone, and yet you don’t understand why. You might be asked to give someone money, or loan them your car, and yet they didn’t even ask you for it. You might feel God is asking you to quit your job and move back home, and yet it doesn’t make sense to you. You don’t understand it because this request came out of left field. In all of these circumstances, you feel God is asking you to do something before you see the need for it. It would be easier to understand if you saw the need. It would be easier to understand if you saw the why first. If you had someone come and ask you for money, then it would be easier for you to understand why God was asking you to give them money. If you saw that someone was without a car, then you could understand why you felt led to let them borrow your car. And yet, that isn’t how God works sometimes.
What just occurred to me, thank you, Holy Spirit, is that sometimes God does it this way because then the Glory is His. If we walk up to someone and ask them if they need a car, and they do, but we had no way of knowing that, then it points them to God. When someone needs $50 for gas, and someone else gives them exactly $50 without them even asking, it points them to God. If they asked if we had money and we gave them money, that would be nice of us and it would be a good thing, and yet it wouldn’t necessarily point them to God. Even with them getting exactly what they needed without asking, sometimes it doesn’t point them to God. Sometimes they chalk it up to a coincidence. However, if they get enough coincidences, they will start to look for something bigger behind it all, and they will find God.
Back to Noah, he can be a great example of how to live out this kind of faith. He didn’t understand; it didn’t make any sense from an earthly view, and yet he did it anyway. The verse says he built the ark out of a holy fear. This doesn’t mean that he was so scared of God that he built this ark because he didn’t feel like he had any other choice. It doesn’t mean that he built the ark out of fear of consequences from God for him or his family. Holy fear is a fear that comes from love. It is less of a fear and more of an awe or reverence toward God. Noah was in awe of God, and I am sure he was grateful that God was willing to spare him and his family. That is a pretty big honor, especially since they were the only family saved.
I know it can seem like God is asking more from you than you are capable of doing. I know that you feel like God maybe has a little too much faith in you at times. They say God will never give us more than we can handle, and we wonder if God overestimates us at times. I heard someone say that quote a bit differently. They said, “God never gives us more than He can handle.” That feels a bit more accurate at times because there is nothing God can’t handle. When you feel overwhelmed, when you feel like God has asked you to do more than you can handle, take a moment to think of all that God asked Noah to do.
God asked Noah, when he was 500 years old, to build an ark, and it took over 100 years to build this ark. I have trouble finding the energy to wash my dishes some days, and Noah was over 450 years older than I am. After building this ark, he needed to fill it with at least one female and one male animal of each kind. I cannot imagine it was easy to get all those animals on the ark without them eating each other. Imagine taking care of all those animals for 150 days while the earth was flooded. I mean, how do you clean out the stalls of lions?
God asked a lot of Noah when he asked him to build this ark. He asked a lot of Noah and his whole family when he gave them the task of repopulating the entire world. God asked a lot from them, and yet he didn’t leave them alone. He gave them the strength they needed to accomplish all he set before them, and He will do the same for you. All God needed from Noah was his “yes,” and God can do the rest. All God needs from you is your “yes” too! He is asking for your yes, even when you don’t understand. He is asking for your yes, even when it doesn’t make sense. He is asking for your yes even when others might say you are crazy. He is asking for your yes even when you feel it is too much. All He needs is your yes, and he will give you all you need to accomplish all He has asked you to do. Will you say yes?
Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, please help us to say yes even when we don’t understand why. Help us to act even when you are asking us to prepare for things not yet seen. Help us to have faith in you, Lord. Help us to trust that if you are asking there is a good reason. Give us the strength and the grace to say yes even if we don’t feel we are good enough. Help us to say yes even when we feel we can’t do it. Lord, we love you, and we thank you for trusting us even though we don’t deserve it. Thank you for using us in your plan even though we aren’t worthy! We are so grateful, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’ holy name. Amen!
Thank you for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I look forward to meeting you here again tomorrow. Remember, Jesus loves you, and so do I. Have a blessed day!

Hope in the Waiting - Day 10 - Trusting God Before You See the Answer
1 Peter 1:8-9 “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
I asked my friend to choose a verse for me while I was at retreat. She chose this one. I am not sure I knew this one, and yet I love it. I know, I say that a lot. It is true; God is so good, and there are countless verses from the Bible that I love. I love this one because it ends with the salvation of our souls, and who wouldn’t love that? As much as I love this verse, I have been stuck on what to say about it. I think one of the hardest parts of faith is believing in things we can’t see. Having that faith that what God says is true even when you don’t see any proof of it.
This reminds me of what I talked about yesterday. Abraham and Sarah trusted that God was going to make him the father of nations even though he didn’t have any children at the time. They trusted for a long time before they saw any proof that God would keep His word. Well, that is not completely true; God had given them proof over the years that he would keep His word, maybe not about this specific thing, but about many other things. God had been providing for Abraham and also talking with him for most of his life, I think.
God told Abraham to leave his home but did not tell him where he was going, and Abraham listened, and God always provided for him. Wherever Abraham went, he was prosperous. He listened to God, he trusted God, and he was rewarded by God. Did Abraham always do it perfectly? Nope. When they got tired of waiting for God to give Sarah a baby, Abraham slept with Sarah’s handmaid so that Abraham would have a baby. That did not turn out well. When Abraham and Sarah had to go into Egypt to evade a famine, Abraham was concerned they might kill him and take Sarah as their wife, so he told her to lie and say she was his sister. This did not end well either.
Every time we try to take things into our own hands, or force our own timing onto God’s plans, things do not end well. When Abraham and Sarah were able to believe in God’s word while they weren’t seeing proof of it, then things went better, and they were rewarded for their patience and their faith. The same is true for us. We are being called to have faith in things that we cannot. We may be able to see God’s faithfulness in our lives, but we might not be able to see proof for that specific promise.
I think this is where I am getting stuck with this passage. It says, “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.” I guess I am struggling because I think we do see God in our lives. I get that we don’t see him physically, and maybe that is what they mean, but we do see him, right? Or maybe not everyone does see Him in their lives. God is working in our lives every single day. If we are looking for it, we will see it. When we start looking, we will begin to see Him in the big things and the little things. So, I guess my question is: do I love Him even though I haven’t seen Him, or do I love him because I have seen Him working in my life? It sounds like today might not be one of those days where you end this podcast feeling you know the meaning of the scripture verse any better than you did before you started it. Which I think is ok; I hope it is ok. Our goal here is to walk boldly with Jesus. My goal is to explore the scripture with you and to learn together. Today I feel this is a scripture we can pray on and ask God to reveal the meaning of it and how we can use it to make our lives better.
I did look up the meaning of this scripture, as I was lost as to how to start or what to say. There are many commentaries that will give you a more in-depth look into this scripture. I felt the Holy Spirit was leading me to talk about where we see God in our lives instead of talking about where we don’t see Him. I think God gives us plenty of chances to have faith in things when we can’t see the proof. For me, this is easier to do the more I look at all the places I have seen God in my life. When I look back and see all the places He has shown up and kept His promises, then it is easier for me to believe He will take care of this too.
God is working in my life, and He is working in your life too. The question is, did we know it was God when we saw Him? Did we know that kind person who paid for our coffee was the face of God? Did we know the person that held the door of the elevator was the face of God? Did we know the person who was in line in front of us at the store was the face of God? Did we know the stranger who said a kind word was the face of God? Did we know the breakthrough we received at work was a gift from God? Did we know it was God who helped us through that last difficult season? Did we know it was God who made that awesome thing happen?
I am blessed to have had parents who saw God working in everything they did! I am blessed to have parents who saw God everywhere they went. They knew without a shadow of a doubt that God loved them and they loved Him. They did an awesome job of passing this down to me, and so I also know without a shadow of a doubt that I am loved by God. I love God very much, and I don’t know if that is because I haven’t seen him or because I have. I don’t think it matters. What I feel the Holy Spirit is revealing to me, to share with you, is that if we want to be able to trust in things we can’t see, then we need to first start trying to see God in our lives. Where can we see Him? Where has He helped us in the past? What blessings has He already given us? If we want to have faith that God will keep this promise, we can look back to see what promises He has already kept for us.
I am not sure if this episode actually explained the verse above or if it left you more confused. Hopefully, at the very least, it gave you something to think about and something to take to prayer. I hope it also encouraged you to take a look at your life and try to see God in the day-to-day of life. Also look back and see if you can tell where God was in your past. What difficult season did He help you out of? What bad decision did He use for your good? If we look for Him, we will see Him.
Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, I ask you to help clear up any confusion I might have caused. Lord, I ask you to shine a light on all the places you are showing up in our lives. Help us to see you every single day. Help us to love you even when we don’t see you. Help us to believe in what we don’t see. Lord, I pray that you speak to each one individually. I pray that each person who listens to this episode and every episode hears exactly what they need to hear. Lord, you are amazing, and we love you so much. We are so grateful that you are showing up for us. We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’ holy name. Amen!
Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I look forward to meeting you here again tomorrow. Remember, Jesus loves you, and so do I. Have a blessed weekend!

Hope in the Waiting - Day 9- One Small Step of Trust at a Time
Psalm 56:3-4 “But in the day that I'm afraid, I lay all my fears before you and trust in you with all my heart. What harm could a man bring to me? With God on my side, I will not be afraid of what comes.”
Today, I decided to read from the Jesus Calling Devotional. I have not done that in a while; I am unsure why. For those of you who don’t know, this is a devotional book written as if God is speaking to you each day. It is really good and often says exactly what you need to hear for that day. Today’s spoke right to me. It reminded me how important it is to trust God in all times with all things. It is just as important to trust Him with the small things as it is to trust Him with the big things. I will read today’s devotional for you, as I think it will speak to you just as much as it spoke to me.
“TRUST ME with every fiber of your being! What I can accomplish in and through you is proportional to how much you depend on me. One aspect of this is the degree to which you trust me in a crisis or major decision. Some people fail miserably here, while others are at their best in tough times. Another aspect is even more telling: the consistency of your trust in me. People who rely on me in the midst of adversity may forget about me when life is flowing smoothly. Difficult times can jolt you into awareness of your need for me, whereas smooth sailing can lull you into a stupor of self-sufficiency.
I care as much about your tiny trust-steps through daily life as about your daily dramatic leaps of faith. You may think that no one else notices, but the One who is always beside you sees everything — and rejoices. Consistently trusting in me is vital to flourishing in my presence.”
Do you see what I mean when I say it often says exactly what you need to hear for the day? I love that it is written as if God is saying it directly to you. This is truly how God talks to us. I am not sure how many of you listening have taken the time to sit and listen to what God has to say to you. If you have not, give it a try today. God wants to talk to each one of us, and yet the world around us is so noisy it is hard to hear him. However, if we sit down and take the time to listen, we will hear what He wants to tell us. This can take time and also practice. The more time you put into trying to hear God talking to you, the more clearly you will hear Him. The more you will begin to recognize what He sounds like to you.
I have a journal, and I try to write in it as often as I can. In 2020, I changed the way I write in my prayer journal. I used to just write God about my day and what was going on in my life. I still do this, but I don’t just do this. Now, I try to stop and take the time to listen to what God has to say back to me. This has been amazing. I have spent a lot of time listening and have given the Lord time to speak into my life, and it has been life-changing. You would be surprised what the Lord wants to say to you if you only gave Him the time to say it. He is so gentle and affirming.
Sometimes, we think we wouldn’t want to hear what the Lord has to say because we feel we aren’t doing a very good job, and He probably wouldn’t have anything nice to say to us. This is not true. That is what the enemy wants you to think so that you don’t stop and give the Lord time to speak love, light, and truth into your life. When you give Him the time and you listen, you will be surprised at how nicely He talks to you. You will be surprised at how much He loves you. Even in our brokenness, even in our sin, He still speaks so much love into us. It is truly amazing.
This is why I started ending each episode with the Word from the Lord that He gave to our prayer group. The more we all start hearing the way He talks to us, the more we will start to recognize it when we hear Him talking in our own lives. Here is what I do when I write to the Lord. I write Him a letter, and then I ask Him to answer me using my pen, and then I start to write a letter back to myself. I don’t question what comes to mind; I don’t overthink it; I just write everything that comes to mind. Does that mean that every single thing I write down is from the Lord? No, probably not. However, I asked Him to answer me, and when we ask, He answers, so I trust that what I am writing down is from Him.
After you are done writing it down, you can re-read it and see what you wrote and how it makes you feel. If you wrote anything down that makes you feel bad, shameful, or guilty, that is probably not from the Lord. That is not how He talks to us. Sometimes He will convict us of something if we are doing something wrong. However, He doesn’t use shame and guilt to do it. God does not condemn us. He lovingly points us in another direction and then gives us the strength to go in that other direction. Anything you are not sure of, you can take to discernment. You can ask the Lord to clarify; you can ask the Lord to explain more, and you can always go deeper with what you got in the letter. If you do this often enough, you will recognize patterns. You will see that He tends to say the same things over and over again because we tend not to listen. Yet, He keeps saying them until we do listen.
The verse above says, “But in the day that I'm afraid, I lay all my fears before you and trust in you with all my heart. What harm could a man bring to me? With God on my side, I will not be afraid of what comes.” This is a good verse for today because I know a lot of people who are staring down some pretty big fears. Whether they are worried about losing their job, getting sick, or finding a new job, it is all scary. Several people I know are also sick and are worried they won’t be healed. This can be very scary to think you will have to live with this illness for the rest of your life. This is why today’s verse is so important.
The verse says that I lay all my fears before you and trust you with all my heart. I hope we are all doing this. I hope when something scary comes our way, our first instinct is to turn it over to the Lord. Give Him our cares, and He will help us carry them. He will even carry them for us if we can be brave enough to let go and let Him carry them for us. Often we want to pick them back up again. But if we can fully let go, He will take care of them for us. If we can trust Him to do this, our worries and cares become so much lighter.
My favorite part of the devotional from Jesus Calling is, “Another aspect is even more telling: the consistency of your trust in me.” I also love, “I care as much about your tiny trust-steps through daily life as about your daily dramatic leaps of faith.” These both remind us that although it is important to have trust in the Lord when things are going wrong in our lives, it is just as important to trust Him when things are calm, and there isn’t a crisis. Do we do this? Do we trust that God is taking care of all the things, or just the big things? When things are going well, do we still turn to the Lord, or do we try to fix those things on our own?
I think this devotional gives us something to think about this weekend, especially going into the new year. What could we be doing differently? Do we need to be more consistent with our trust in the Lord? What are those tiny trust-steps in our daily life that God is talking about? What if you took 20 minutes sometime today or this weekend and sat down and asked God these questions and then wrote down whatever you think you hear Him say back to you? What an awesome way to end this year and begin next year!
Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, we want to trust you. We want to trust you not only with the big things but the small things too. Please show us how; please guide us. Help us learn how to take those tiny trust-steps into our daily life. Lord, we ask that you help us hear your voice in our heads. We ask you to open our spiritual ears so we can hear you more. Lord, I ask you for a special blessing for each person as they enter this new Year. I ask that you bless them and their families. I ask that you bless their jobs, their ministries, whatever it is they do. I ask for you to help them enter this new year with renewed hope and love. We love you so much, Lord, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus’ holy name. Amen!
Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Remember, Jesus really does love you, yes you, and so do I! Have a blessed weekend.
Today’s Word from the Lord is, “I am the crucified Christ. My blood has freed you. I have washed you clean in my blood. Block your ears to the evil one. He is jealous of my children. His mission is to destroy. I surround my children with my all-consuming love. Love that doesn't skip a beat, and he knows it. Stay strong, stay focused on me.”
