You have a dream, a calling, something God has called you to that's bigger and greater than where you are right now. Maybe you have a need, and you've asked God to fulfill it. The next step God asks you to take might look like it's in the opposite direction of your dream or in violation of your need. Take the next step anyway, because your calling and your provision depend on it.
The trust is: You already have everything you need to accomplish God's purpose for your life today. Use what you've got!
Here's the scripture:
'One of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant, my husband, has died. You know that your servant feared the Lord . Now the creditor is coming to take my two children as his slaves.” Elisha asked her, “What can I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” She said, “Your servant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil.” Then he said, “Go out and borrow empty containers from all your neighbors. Do not get just a few. Then go in and shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour oil into all these containers. Set the full ones to one side.” So she left. After she had shut the door behind her and her sons, they kept bringing her containers, and she kept pouring. When they were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another container.” But he replied, “There aren’t any more.” Then the oil stopped. She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go sell the oil and pay your debt; you and your sons can live on the rest.” '

Do you feel like God's called you to something greater than where you are right now? Maybe it's a life-long dream, a different job, a different location, or a big risk. You need to burn the plow.
3 things we learn in this episode:
Here's the scripture:
'Elijah left there and found Elisha son of Shaphat as he was plowing. Twelve teams of oxen were in front of him, and he was with the twelfth team. Elijah walked by him and threw his mantle over him. Elisha left the oxen, ran to follow Elijah, and said, "Please let me kiss my father and mother, and then I will follow you." "Go on back," he replied, "for what have I done to you?" So he turned back from following him, too the team of oxen, and slaughtered them. With the oxen's wooden yoke and plow, he cooked the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he left, followed Elijah, and served him."
1 Kings 19:19-21
Do you ever feel stuck? Stuck in a relationship, stuck financially, stuck in a job, stuck in your head? We all have invisible fences constructed in our minds that keep us stuck! Elijah deals with this in the book of 1 Kings - yep, it's been happening for a looooong time. We're looking at the same scripture again in this episode, but this time we're focusing on the conversation between God and Elijah. Here's the passage:
'Suddenly, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of Armies,” he replied, “but the Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they’re looking for me to take my life.” Then the Lord said to him, “Go and return by the way you came to the Wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, you are to anoint Hazael as king over Aram. You are to anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel and Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. Then Jehu will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Jehu. But I will leave seven thousand in Israel — every knee that has not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him.” '

Hey, I'd love it if you would share this with a friend!
Do you ever hear from God? What if He's always speaking, but we just aren't close enough to hear Him? In 1 Kings 19, there's a story about Elijah hearing from God. There's a whirlwind, an earthquake, and a fire. We often look for God in the big, bold things of life too. But God wasn't in them. Then he heard the sound of a gentle whisper, and God was in the whisper. Here's the scripture:
'He entered a cave there and spent the night. Suddenly, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of Armies, but the Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are looking for me to take my life.” Then he said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the Lord ’s presence.” At that moment, the Lord passed by. A great and mighty wind was tearing at the mountains and was shattering cliffs before the Lord , but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was a voice, a soft whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Suddenly, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of Armies,” he replied, “but the Israelites have abandoned your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they’re looking for me to take my life.” Then the Lord said to him, “Go and return by the way you came to the Wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, you are to anoint Hazael as king over Aram.'

This episode is the breakdown of a familiar passage that you often hear at funerals: Psalm 23. We learn about what it means that God is our shepherd, we are His sheep, and what Kintsugi is and how it relates to us and this passage.

"'The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters. He renews my life; he leads me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff — they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live."

Here's the scripture for this episode:
"Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu each took his own firepan, put fire in it, placed incense on it, and presented unauthorized fire before the Lord , which he had not commanded them to do. Then fire came from the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord ."

What's the result of all that consistency we talked about in episode 004? That's exactly what we're talking about today. Christ is in me, so I have everything I need to accomplish what God has called me to in this season. Here's the Scripture:
"Therefore, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who is working in you both to will and to work according to his good purpose. Do everything without grumbling and arguing, so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world, by holding firm to the word of life. Then I can boast in the day of Christ that I didn’t run or labor for nothing."

Consistency is underrated and over delivers. It pays off when we're consistent in healthy physical habits, but it pays off even more when we're consistent in healthy spiritual habits. In Galatians 5, we read about the fruit of the Spirit, which outlines the results of being consistent in following Jesus.
Here's the Scripture:
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things."
Galatians 5:22-23
Anxiety. Stress. We all deal with it. As men, most of our stress and anxiety is rooted in our God-given roles of protector and provider. When we feel inability or instability in either of those areas, we get stressed. Although there's not a preventative for anxiety, the good news is that there's a cure for anxiety!
The passage this episode is based on is Matthew 6:25-34.
“Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying? And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you — you of little faith? So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat? ’ or ‘What will we drink? ’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

This is a conversation about Jesus' teaching on prayer in the sermon on the mount in Matthew 6:5-15. The irony is that Jesus seems to intertwine forgiveness and prayer together, as if they go hand-in-hand. In fact, He teaches something that is seemingly "bad" theology in our modern world, but perhaps our theology should align with Jesus' teaching.
Here's the passage:
“Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. When you pray, don’t babble like the Gentiles, since they imagine they’ll be heard for their many words. Don’t be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask him. Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well. But if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your offenses."
