  • Walking Writers Podcast-Episode 18: Finding Your Vibe
Hello Walking Writers, This is a quick update to let you know I haven't forgot about you or completely ditched my blog and podcast. I know everyone has busy lives so I will keep this post short and sweet to the best of my ability. Over the past few weeks I have pushed myself harder to work on my writing outside of the blog and podcast. Although I love doing both, the main reason I am here is to tell you about the things I experience while establish myself as a professional writer. Over the last year since graduation, my word count has fallen and almost become non-existent with my fictional writing work. Maybe it is all for a reason as I have mentioned before on the podcast, if you are keeping up with me there as well. I am starting to find the flow again, although it isn't at the output as I did when in school, I am keeping up with a discipline and remaining focused on the overall agenda to output work that people would like to buy and experience stories from my voice. Expanding the writing routine into my schedule, I have found little time to get to the networking aspect as to posting on this blog and the podcast. I want to let it be known that I still want to help others with their writing journey as I still need help with mine. I have joined several writing communities over the last several months and have staked out to see how I can contribute to the community as well as finding ways I can get positive feedback in return. It is important to find a writing community as a novice writer. When you find a good one filled with good people willing to take time out of their busy writing schedule to help you, consider yourself a lucky person. Since it's national poetry month I wanted to share with you that I am reading more poetry and I also been dabbling in writing poetry myself. I wish I could bring myself to write a poem a day. I think that would be a great goal to have by the end of the month. I would have thirty poems to edit and hone into something worth keeping or publishing. Maybe narrowing them down to a few great ones and maybe ten or so good ones. Maybe this will be a goal to set for myself in the future, I'm sure the poets reading this now would say if it were only that easy. I'm no poet and I also don't know much about it so to say that I'm going to write one every day that was worth anything is like saying I could contribute to brain surgery when I don't have any schooling or knowledge about it. I believe it was Ernest Hemingway that had a quote similar to something like that. Believe it or not I started writing this post about a week ago and I intended to publish it this past weekend, but you know how it goes writers. I have hopes that my next blog or podcast won't be so stretched out but April is a busy month full of family birthdays and other life fun filled tricks up April's sleeve. Do yourself a favor this week and push yourself to create a writing schedule and try sticking to it. Of you can't, find another time or find some community to help you drive yourself to committing time to yourself and your writing. I hope you have a great week and I'll see you on the trail.

  • Walking Writers Podcast-Episode 17: Coming up with a routine and following a discipline plus Graduate reading.
Episode 17 is one of my favorite episodes so far. sometimes I can believe I've made it this far into the Podcast without quitting yet. This episode is all about discipline and finding a routine that works for you. The best way I can describe how I put my work down on the page is taking one word at a time, then sentence, then paragraph. Sometimes if we break big things up into smaller chunks it makes it easier to digest and conceptualize as things find their way together. Maybe this is why the podcast continues to come together is because I break it down into small pieces so I don't get overwhelmed too easily. I do believe in having a plan for those planners out there, but there is something that is so organic about being a pantser, something that makes the writing feel alive an unrehearsed. When I sit down to write most the times I know what my beginning middle and end look like but not always. I think if you listen to my reading from my thesis for graduation last June you will hear some of the things I'm talking about in this paragraph. Just know that it was intensely revised up until the hour before I read it, as others did with their thesis readings as well. Nothing is perfect so give it your best shot and come back to critique your own work with fresh eyes and a fresh mind to allow the beauty unfold in front of you.

  • Walking Writers Podcast-Episode 16: Put one word after the other.
Episode 16 is about finding that time to write and making it a discipline for yourself to put words down on the page and make something out of nothing. Sometimes the hardest thing is looking at a blank page, but know that every writer faces this and you're not alone. Quick updates with myself and my writing journey, and this month is National Poetry Month, so pick up some poetry and do some reading. Have a great week and I'll see you on the trail.
