  • #90 ASSP: Stewarding A Legacy Of Safety
This week on The WAM Podcast's special series with ASSP (American Society of Safety Professionals), host, Jennifer McNelly, speaks with Wells Bullard, the 5th generation CEO of the family-owned safety equipment giant, Bullard. The company was founded in 1898 by Well's great-great-grandfather as a supply company for copper and gold mines in California and Nevada.
Bullard is a pioneer in every sense of the word. They are famous for inventing the beloved hard hat in 1919 and have been making safety equipment since before it was even an industry standard. Jennifer and Wells talk about the idea of diversity in the workplace as it relates to safety and the standards and practices that Bullard uses in the engineering of its products. Wells also introduces us to the famous Bullard Turtle Club, which honors accident survivors who have a hard hat to thank for their luck. • #89 How Not To Be A Bull In A China Shop
This week on The WAM Podcast, hosts, Andrea and Desiree give their imaginary 28-year-old selves some advice for maintaining great relationships and excelling in the workplace. Sometimes, especially as young people, we can get caught up in the wrong definition of what it means to be excelling at our job. Maybe we got a little bit of authority and started making too many big changes too early on, or maybe we focused on a task at hand at the expense of asking someone how their day was going.
What Andrea and Desiree teach us in this episode is that sometimes pausing and actually observing what is going on in the workplace can earn us far more respect than storming in like a bull in a china shop. There are always things happening behind the scenes that just can't be understood unless they are given time to reveal themselves. It is precisely an attentiveness to this fact that could make a young and ambitious person trying to make a name for themselves look mature, rather than silly and naive. Tune in and take some notes from two seasoned pros!

  • #85 Riveting Exchanges: How To Manage The Four Passive-Aggressive Boss Personalities
This week on The WAM Podcast's edition of "Riveting Exchanges," hosts, Andrea Olson and Desiree Grace, continue with their "Bad Boss" discussion. The ladies look at the four different types of "weak" personalities. Here, you'll meet the four archetypal passive-aggressive bosses: Indecisive Ike, Steady Eddie, Insecure Ida, and Absentee Al.
Indecisive Ike is the indecisive enemy of change, the classic “paralysis by analysis” boss. Steady Eddie is the type of boss that is downright resistant to change. Insecure Ida has low self-esteem and needs constant affirmation, and Absentee Al is barely present, rarely responding to his employees' needs.
These characteristics in a boss can be phenomenally frustrating, especially when you as an employee are trying to progress and implement change within your company. If you're facing one or more of these bosses, by the end of this episode, you'll have a set of mental, emotional, and practical tips on how to tactfully manage them. With these tools, you may even start to view these "bad bosses" as a positive opportunity for growth.

  • #84 Impacting The World Through Innovation
This week on The WAM Podcast, host, Linda Rigano is joined by Rosemarie Truman, a woman on a mission to help entrepreneurs realize their dreams. Rosemarie shares with listeners about how the most revolutionizing inventions, including the Internet, GPS and cancer vaccines, have come out of government-funded Research and Development (R&D). According to Rosemarie, the majority of US taxpayers’ R&D investment, $140B/year, is untapped; with less than 0.1% of inventions become products.
Many of the inventions have the potential to transform and create disruptive new platforms and models. In the last 7 years, $1 trillion in US taxpayer-funded inventions is available from NIH, NASA, the Department of Defense and other agencies, universities, hospitals, and federal institutions.
That’s why Rosemarie created The Center for Advancing Innovation (CAI)– to tap into the value from these inventions by putting them into the hands of hard-working, enterprising entrepreneurs to boost economic growth, create knowledge-based jobs and launch new markets. Today, she is working with The Walton Family Foundation to launch the SCALE challenge– a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for entrepreneurs to tap into technology, funding, and expert coaching– all to create their dream businesses.
On this episode, we also get to hear about Rosemarie’s influencers, her education, and the career opportunities that helped her to become the mentor she is today. The ladies also discuss women's tendency to be thwarted by “imposter syndrome” and the people, including her mother, who have inspired her the most.
