If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Have you ever been asked to do a job - only to find the work area completely unorganized?  Or had the before mentioned situation, straightened it out, and returned to find it in disarray?  It's extremely frustrating - but even more so dangerous, unorganized, unproductive, and all around unprofessional!  All of which can cost time, money, and potentially lives.
In the 5S Methodology - Step Number Two is Straighten.  When you only have 5 Steps (6 when you include Safety) - that should tell you that it's a very important step that shouldn't be ignored.
In one of our previous Podcasts - we spoke about the reasons Safety Floor Markings and Signs exist in the workplace.  Many times - they exist because the same situation happened enough that it justified creating permanent guidelines for avoiding it going forward.  Most usually something that was detrimental to safety, organizations, and/or productivity is involved.
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.

I recently saw a sign that read, "Beware Of Falling Deer:  Leopards conceal their unfinished food in the tops of trees"  In addition to the fact that there should have been a "Beware Of Leopards!" Sign as well - the point is, it's there for a reason.  As silly as that sign seems - at SOME point and time, a deer probably fell from a tree and either hit or come close to hitting someone.
    The workplace is no different.
Think of the signs you see every day.
Signs with statements like "Employees Wash Your Hands Before Returning To Work" or images that depict being electrocuted or having your hand chewed up in a machine.  They're all around us.
And just like the falling deer - they've been displayed because someone somewhere not only did it - but did it enough that someone finally said, "We NEED a sign!"

It's funny how one small article or incident can make you think of a topic to speak about.
I was going through a document we send to customers we call an SAQ.  You're probably aware of an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).  An SAQ is similar - but instead of frequent, it's for SHOULD ask questions.  A better way of thinking about it might be - the questions you wish customers would ask, but don't.
In that SAQ - I saw the question, "What is one of the main benefits of 5S Methodology?"  And although there's many answers as to why the 5S Methodology is so important - the number one reason is SAFETY!
Since the name of this Podcast is "Warehouse Safety Tips"  - singling out SAFETY as a topic probably doesn't come as a surprise.  It was the second part of the answer that caught my eye, and why you'll find it fitting as well.

On one of our previous Podcasts - we spoke about 3 Point Safety.
What are the 3 points of "3 Point Safety"?
One - you have tools, equipment, products, and/or services you use.
Two - you're provided training on how to properly use them.
Three - you follow the training.
It's really as easy as 1,2,3.
And it repeats over and over again.
Today we're going to take a look at the First Point - tools, equipment, products, and/or service.  And more specifically - Safety Floor Markings and Signs.
Imagine if the area you live in all of the sudden had all the lines taken off the roads, all the traffic signs removed, all the traffic and light poles taken down, and maps and/or GPS were non existent.
The utter confusion, chaos, and accidents that would occur, would be overwhelming!
Now apply the same thing to your workplace.
The lack of Safety Floor Markings and Signs would bring the same amount of confusion, chaos, and accidents.

I have what's probably a unique situation for most couples.  I have Podcasts and have marketing contracts revolving around safety - and one of the products my wife's company sells is Safety Tape.  So a lot of our work conversations are Safety Oriented!
A couple days ago - she was racking her brain in an attempt to come up with a solution for one of her customers.  She said they have an area that needs special attention paid towards it.  It's an area where Tow and Lift Trucks have to go slightly uphill and into a loading area.  They've tried lights, floor markings, and signs - but still can't get the Fork and Lift Truck drivers to pay full attention.  She asked me if there was anything out there that would work to remedy this.
When approached with a challenge - it's very important to keep you mind open to more possibilities than what's being presented.
What I mean by that is this.  The way she framed this challenge to me - it initially had me attempting to think of other PRODUCTS they hadn't tried.  And although I'm sure they are many more than this - the only thing I could really think of was Laser Images that project from above.  Other than that - they HAVE tried most - if not all - of the available options.
But then - I shifted my thinking outside of what was being presented - and the answer was right there!

On a previous Podcast - we spoke about Rack Safety.
The second half of that Podcast covered Fork and Lift Truck Safety.
There's an old Sales Adage that states, a customer must be exposed to a product or service 7 times or more before they're willing to purchase.  With Social Media and changes within sales and marketing - that may have changed.  But the point is - sometimes you need to hear something several times before it sinks in.  So we're going to cover Fork and Lift Truck Safety - just a little bit more.
In addition to wanting the information - and importance of the information to sink in - it's very important to point out some of the stats surrounding this topic.
According to OSHA (The Occupational Safety and Health Administration) - Fork and Lift Trucks account for dozens of deaths and thousands of serious injuries per year.
Well over a third of those deaths are caused from Fork and Lift Trucks tipping over and crushing the driver.  And although there are certainly cases where it didn't help - the very first way to avoid this happening, is by wearing the proper Safety Belts and/or Harnesses while operating Fork and Lift Trucks.
Do you see a bit of a trend here?  MOST of these injuries and deaths could be avoided.
Before ever getting on and/or operating a Tow or Lift Truck - be certain you've taken and know all the required Safety Training to operate the equipment.  But MOST important - employ your training in your day to day actions - and make sure your co-workers are doing the same.
If you don't know or something seems incorrect - consult a supervisor.

If you have Tow or Lift Trucks at your facility - it's almost certain you have racks to store items.

And that means you have - or at least SHOULD have - Safety Rules to follow within those racks.  Those rules are put in place to keep you and your co-workers safe, organized, and productive.

When working within racks - you really need to keep your head your head on a swivel.  You have potential hazards all around you.  From all angles.  And it's not just yourself you should be concerned about.  Be aware of people walking in and around you in racks.

And speaking of your head - as always, it should be covered with all the Safety Requirements your facility has in place.  Including but not limited to - Hearing Protection, Eye Protection, and Hard Hat.  Other Safety Gear such as Steel Toe Boots and Breathing Protection may be required as well.  Again - just follow whatever Safety Requirements your facility has in place.

Now that you have on the right equipment - know all the Safety Areas of your racks.  These will be designated with Floor Markings and/or signs.  And always be on the lookout for areas that have been changed or updated - so you're always aware of most up to date Safety Markings.

And it's not just the Safety Markings you need to pay attention to.  Always pay attention to the racks.  Inspect them and know that the racks, products, and identifications are all in great shape.  The slightest damage in the right place, can cause an entire rack to collapse.  And in many cases - it can cause a Domino Effect that ends up taking out other racks with it.  In reference to products - assuring loads are of proper weight and placement in their spots is also of the utmost importance.  And last but not least - the way you identify placement of product needs to be easy to see / scan.  This way, you and your co-workers will be able to properly identify where everything is at all times.

We just mentioned  proper weight of products within racks.  Knowing the Maximum Weight of each area is vital for safety.  Generally - heavier items are stored in lowest to the ground - and decrease in weight as they go higher.  Putting something heavier than racks can support is a recipe for trouble - and should be avoided at all costs.

When placing products on uppermost racks - it's vital that you know and are constantly aware of your clearance.  Roofs, Sprinkler Heads, lighting, and cameras can be easily damaged by not paying attention.  And in the case of Sprinkler Systems - can cause excessive damage and downtime when accidentally hit.

Last - but certainly not least, if you don't know or something seems incorrect - consult a supervisor.

Have you ever received a ticket from law enforcement for going slightly over the speed limit or just missing a yellow light and running a red?
Both of these instances have STRONG similarities with working within a factory, warehouse, and/or anywhere with Safety Markings you're suppose to be paying attention to.
When it comes to signs - they give you guidance for how to conduct yourself within an area.
And when it comes to colors - like that of a traffic light and/or sign - we've been conditioned since we were children to recognize them.  Green means it's OK to proceed, yellow means you should be exercising caution and/or slowing down, and red means you shouldn't be doing something and/or stopping.
And when we get those warnings and/or tickets from law enforcement - it's very easy to complain after they leave.  You might be mad that they've taken away time you needed to get somewhere, that it's going to cost you money, that they have better things to do, and/or a combination of all three.

The part that you might not realize at the time and/or after the fact is this - they're doing it for your safety and the safety of others.
When you think of it THAT way - it should change your entire outlook.
And even if you don't care to admit it - you wouldn't want people speeding and running red lights around you or your loved ones.  So why would you hold different standards for yourself?

The first portion of this Podcast covers something that's usually within your control - and that's hazards.
Think of these as the hazards you as a visitor, employee, and/or management can spot as a potential or current issue, can usually be identified pretty easily.
These include (But aren't in any way limited to) -
    • Pallets in the way of walk/vehicle paths.
    • Pallets - regardless of where they are - that are damaged and aren't fit to hold product or could injure someone.
    • Staff walking in places they shouldn't be.
    • Items left laying around your facility that should be picked up and/or put/thrown away.
    • Staff not using proper harnesses when working in areas that require it.

Almost all of these can be remedied with two things.
    • First - the proper Safety Markings.  Safety Tape, Angles, and  Signs indicate caution areas and at the same time make sure there's a place for everything and everything's in its place.
    • Second - staff paying attention to and following those Safety Markings. As we discussed in our first Podcast - following the 5S Methodology, you can prevent a lot of potential issues by just being proactive.

Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.

    Safety Training
This first tip sounds like common sense - but before you can practice safety and productivity, you have to know what's expected.  And that means being trained by your facility's Safety Team - and staying up to date on new developments and practices.  It also means being proactive and looking for ways to constantly improve the 6S Methodology of your facility.  If you're unaware of what that is - be sure to listen to Episode One of our Podcast.
    Be Aware Of Your Surroundings
We just mentioned being proactive.  That brings us to the second tip of our Top Ten and something that's very similar with the campaign that's also part of safety, "If you see something, say something."  But instead of being limited to suspicious activity and items - this version would be related more to you're responsible for the degree of safety around you.  So if you see something that needs attention - let your safety team know about it.  We'll revisit this idea with a broader view at the end our Top Ten.
    Preventative Maintenance
Our third tip is one of those areas many think of as common sense - but in the long run is one of the most important areas of all - and that's prevention.  An overwhelming amount of issues can be avoided with an ounce of prevention.  This prevention can come in the form of not participating, reporting, and/or not condoning horseplay | assuring maintenance is being kept up on the tools and machinery you're responsible for | and/or something as simple as making sure there's a place for everything and everything's in its place.
    Pride In Your Work
E.L. James is quoted as saying, “If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well.”  Taking pride in your work goes hand in hand with safety - and it's our fourth tip.  Incidents are unlikely to occur when you're dotting your i's an crossing your t's.
    Safety Equipment

Our fifth tip makes sure you - and everyone around you - are always wearing and utilizing the proper safety equipment.  This includes - but in no means is limited to - hard hats, gloves, uniforms, lock out tag out equipment, braces, steel toe boots, glasses or goggles, and harnesses.
