    Paint Vs Tape
On today's Podcast, we'll be covering Paint Vs Tape - so stay tuned.
    Welcome to Warehouse Safety Tips!

If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
With Thanksgiving and Christmas approaching - we're entering into a couple of the busiest maintenance times of the year.
One of the maintenance tasks done during these times is applying and/or updating floor markings.
Although there are several options out there, two remain the most popular - Paint and Tape.
Just to give you a straight up Spoiler Alert - this Podcast weighs very heavy on the side of Tape Versus Paint - and here are just a few of the reasons.
Assuming you've picked an Adhesive Tape that's designed for Heavy Industrial Use - they:

    • Installs quickly.  Some even remove just as fast - and without residue.  Paint doesn't go down and/or come up quickly.
    • Is beveled to increase the durability against industrial brush scrubbers, forklifts, and heavy industrial wheel traffic.
    • Has NO dry time (Unlike paint)
    • Installation requires VERY little production down time in your facility.
    • Can have a strip or chevron pattern (Doing this with paint is extremely difficult and time consuming).

We're open to debate on the subject - but feel the above mentioned benefits make for an obvious winner.
Regardless of what you choose - be sure to do everything you can to make your facility as safe and productive as possible.

Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Have you ever heard someone say, "It's the simple things in life that really matter."?
In your facilities - there are two simple things that are equally as powerful.
Those two things are Looking and Listening.
Concentrate for a moment on all the things that fall into this category.  Here are just a few things that come to mind.

    • The beeping of lift trucks backing up.
    • Safety Floor Markings and Signs.
    • Announcements and alerts over the PA System.
    • Lockout / Tagout Indicators

But looking and listening goes way beyond the visual and audible examples mentioned above.  It can also apply to the following examples.

    • Watching for and removing debris from walk/drive-ways and work areas.
    • Listening for out of the ordinary sounds coming from machines to head off potential issues.
    • Observing procedures and finding ways they could be improved upon.

The list could go on and on!
The point is - safety can be as simple as keeping your eyes and ears open.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
If you've ever worked in a location where the surfaces you stand or travel on can become slick - you'll recognize just how important our topic is today.
There are hundreds of fatalities, THOUSANDS of missed days, and thousands of OSHA Violations related to slips in the workplace.
As with most unsafe situations in the workplace - most of these situations could have been avoided.
Here are just a few of the ways you can help to prevent slips from happening.
    • 6S Methodology (Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain, and Safety).  By striving to make your facility more safe, productive, and organized every day - hopefully you'll find and prevent slip hazards before they occur.
    • Even though you can't always know what's going to cause slips - there are some usual situations to watch out for.  This could include (But isn't limited to):
      • Weather.  Especially rain, ice, and snow.  If you know you and your staff are going to track in these various forms of moisture - try to get ahead of the situation with absorbent mats, Wet Floor Signs, regular mopping, fans, and anything else you can do to keep surfaces dry.
      • Machines / Vehicles that leak water, fuel, oil, and/or lubricates.  First do whatever you can to stop these leaks.  What you can't stop - be sure to make staff aware of the situation and try to clean leaks up as they occur.  Having spill containment products at the ready will greatly aid with areas like this.

    • Safety Floor Markings and Signs.  Making your staff aware of areas that are or could become slick - is a great step towards preventing slips.  This can be done with temporary and permanent signs - as well as with tape and floor markings.  In reference to tape - not only can tape direct people to move within safe areas and/or alert them to areas that need attention.  It can also provide stability in the form of anti-slip and/or gripping tape.

Although there are many other ways to avoid slips - these 3 should get you off to a great start.

Our last several Podcasts have centered around Social Distancing.
Every time we think we've covered what we want to tell you - we get pulled back in!
Before telling you about the products we're showcasing this week - let me tell you a story.
Just after the stores were allowed to open back up during the pandemic - I visited a retail store.  I needed Customer Service - so I was directed to the staging area they'd made to accommodate Social Distancing.  They had taken what looked like Painter's Tape - and had made squares on the ground to stand in.  In each square - they made numbers with the Painter's Tape as well.  All the tape was dirty, torn and/or missing in spots, and very unprofessional looking.

Non-adhering and unprofessional looking Painter's Tape could have been avoided with a combination of tape, angles, shapes, and/or numbers.
On our last Podcast - one of the Social Distancing Floor Markings we spoke about were arrows.  This week we have yet another shape that can be used for Social Distancing and/or to show direction (For aisles, tours, and/or walkways - just to name a few).
That shape is our Pedestrian Floor Marking.
Simply adhere it to the floor - and you have an instantly recognizable symbol for where to stand.  As mentioned above - you could place these throughout your facility showing the direction taken by a tour as well.
Visit our website Warehouse Safety Tips and click on Episode 39 to see what a Pedestrian Floor Marking looks like.
We mentioned this last week - but it's well worth mentioning again.  Unlike paint - removable safety floor markings (Such as arrows or pedestrians) can be removed and/or replaced with minimal loss of production time.
We're happy to provide you with solutions to make your facility safe, organized, and Social Distancing compliant.

Labor Day recognizes the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.  And here at Warehouse Safety Tips - we know just how hard you work at your facilities, and greatly appreciate it!
Our last two Podcasts have centered around Social Distancing.
This episode - we're going to cover an item we missed, and cover some more of our Social Distancing Signs and Tape.
The item we missed last week is the simplicity portion of our title - and that's arrows.
Much like the footprints we showcased last week - arrows quite simply show direction.  Because they come in different colors - each color can signify a different event.
Just a few examples of this would be - staff, vendors, tours, and/or lift trucks.
And unlike paint - removable safety floor markings (Such as arrows) can be removed and/or replaced with minimal loss of production time.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
On our last Podcast - we spoke about Social Distancing Preparation Tips.  On that Podcast - one of the tips was Social Distancing Signs and Floor Markings.  So this week we're going to cover 4 items within that category you can use to implement Social Distancing.First in our list are signs.
There are so many Social Distancing Signs out there to choose from - and if you don't find what you need, you can even have custom ones made.  They range from the health side of things (Instructing you to do things such as washing your hands) - to staying 6ft apart at all times.  And even though you usually think of signs as being upright (Posted on a wall) - many times these signs are adhered to the floor.
Second in our list are segments.
You may not be aware of the name - but you probably have seen one (Most likely a bunch of 'em).  Essentially - a segment is a piece of pre-cut floor tape.  Instead of a sign or the other floor markings we'll be covering - these segments provide designated spacing.  Although it doesn't have anything to do with Social Distancing - think of the line you'd stand behind while throwing darts.

With that said - here are 12 Tips to get started with.
1 - Know what regulations you’re required to follow - and what you want implemented. (This may vary facility to facility)
2 - Walk your facility and detail how and where you need to implement the wants and regulations of your Social Distancing Plans.  This may include - but is by no means limited to the following.
3 - Assure staff are distanced by 6-foot work areas.
4 - Install partitions between work areas.
    5 - Implement one-way traffic flows.

One of the signs you'll see displayed around your facility - as well as one you'll be given training on - is the HMIS Color Bar.  This sign will show you the 4 Levels of Hazards you need to be aware of.
The HMIS Color Bar consists of 4 Colors.  Each Color Bar has a Numeric Hazard Level associated with it.  These levels range from 0(Zero) or no risk - up to 4, which signifies the highest risk.
As you know - we keep these Podcasts short and to the point - so know this is a VERY high-level look at the HMIS Color Bar.
The colors on this sign are as follows.
Blue is for Health Hazards.  In addition to the Numeric Hazard Level - this level also has a space for an Asterisk.  If you see this Asterisk - it means there's also a Chronic Health Hazard, when long-term exposure is present.
Red is for Flammability Hazards.  With this and the other levels - each of the 5 Numeric Hazard Levels can mean different things.  Be sure to get with your Safety Coordinator to know what each of these Numeric Hazard Levels means for each color of the sign.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
For the 4 "What If?" Situations we've chosen - we'll be going from what we feel and/or hope are most likely to occur, down to least likely.
And although we'll be doing a high level look at each of the 4 - we'll dive deeper into each one in upcoming episodes.
With that said, we'll start with Injuries.
Injuries can be anything from a simple cut to something requiring medical attention - and everything in-between.  Regardless of the severity - here are a couple things you'll want to know.
First and foremost - ALL injuries need to be reported to management.  What you think is simple at the moment - could change at any time, and management needs to know all the particulars.
Next - training is always part of injury prevention and procedures.  You need to know (Including but not limited to):
    • How to best avoid issues by wearing the proper safety gear and following the rules of the job by the book.
    • Where First Aid Stations are in your area should you need them.
    • Basic procedures to follow until someone trained to handle injuries arrives.
    • Who to talk to should an injury occur.

Next in our "What If?" Situations are things to do should you experience a Power Outage.
Again this will be from a high-level - but you'll need to know (Including but not limited to):
    • To stay calm and not panic.
    • Even if your facility is equipped with an Emergency Generator or some sort of Battery Operated Lights - you should still know where a flashlight is, and use it to direct yourself and others to safety.  Assure no one is left behind - and take roll when you get to a safe zone.
    • Go to the nearest exit available to you.
    • Have kits prepared for whatever situations could arise.
    • When returning to work - be very mindful of issues that could arise from machinery starting back up once the power is restored.

If you've ever seen one of those videos where someone hits a rack with a lift truck and it causes a Domino Effect of damage - you won't soon forget it.  And if you're unfortunate enough to have witnessed it or caused it in real life - you'll definitely never forget it!
Not only can it result in a large amount of time, production, and money loss - but it can bring about the ultimate loss, your and/or co-workers lives.
Much like most accidents - it CAN be avoided.
Here are 3 Pallet and Racking Safety Tips to help.
Tip #1 begins the same way most things do - with training.  That training can occur in several ways - but for our tips today we'll stick with two, Rack and Lift Truck Training.
We could go into detail about do's and don'ts of Lift Truck Operation (And HAVE in previous Podcasts) - but we'll make it simple and say, know and follow all the rules and regulations related to operating a lift truck BEFORE ever entering the racks in your facility.  So far as the racks are concerned - be sure to know - including, but NOT limited to:
    • What a secure / non-damaged racking system and the pallets within them are supposed to look like.
    • How pallets are supposed to be arranged / stacked on the racks (Including what sort of items go where and what weights need to be observed).
    • How inventory procedures work.
    • Where items of concern - such as sprinkler heads, cameras, and/or lighting - are located (To avoid hitting them with your lift truck and/or a load).

Tip #2 is about Pallet and Racking Inspection.
With pallets - your inspection is pretty easy.  Just make sure they're not damaged - and can safely and properly handle the load you're putting on them.
Racks aren't quite as simple.  When inspecting racks - you want to make sure danger areas - such as corners - are free of damage.  Next you need to look over all areas and assure nothing looks out of place.
With both pallets and racks - if you do find something, make sure you alert all applicable parties.

Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
