The Pros and Cons of Consistency

    Welcome to Warehouse Safety Tips!

If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
The great Benjamin Frankin is quoted as saying, "Energy and Persistence Conquer All Things".
There are two components to that statement - energy, and persistence.
    Let's break those down individually.
Simply stated - energy IS action.
Many times you'll hear people say, "Knowledge Is Power".  But it's only half true.  Knowledge is only powerful when applied.  And what is the application of something?  Action or energy.
Persistence can be likened to consistency.
But are persistence and/or consistency always a good thing?  The answer is no.
Compounding on something can actually be positive AND negative.  In his book "The Slight Edge" - Jeff Olson states, "It doesn't seem to make a difference at the time - but compounded by time, makes all the difference in the world."  IT being a slight discipline OR a slight error in judgment.
As it applies to safety - what would you rather do?
Look at that machine that has an obvious need - lubrication, safety guard replaced, and/or maintenance issue - and say, "It SHOULD make it another day."?
    OR
Embarq on an unending quest to find and fix every potential safety issue you can find?
Because you're listening to this Podcast - we KNOW you're an action taker!
Compounding money will make you rich - but compounding safety pays awesome dividends too!
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
If you've ever been to or worked in a warehouse - you know just how important safety is to both management and staff.  It's almost impossible to go 10 steps without seeing Safety Tape, Angles, Signs, and/or products.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Where do the subjects for this Podcast come from?
The majority come from having worked in facilities myself - but others come from various experiences.
For today's Podcast, the inspiration came from traveling with my daughter for a College Visit.
In general - flying has its own safety protocols, rules, and regulations.  Add to that - at the time of this Podcast, the U.S. is still in the midst of the Covid 19 Pandemic.  So as you can imagine - traveling by air is under a microscope more than ever right now.
Even before you leave for your trip - you're making sure you have everything you're supposed to and assuring you don't have anything you're not supposed to have as well.
You're under time restraints, dealing with traffic, and negotiating your way through all sorts of obstacles before even getting to the complicated part of travel.
Messages and instructions are coming from every direction, you're going through security, and trying to get everything completed in time to make your flight.
And if all goes well - you board the aircraft, and the instructions start all over again.
The point of mentioning all that - is you HAVE to look and pay attention to what's going on around you Up, Down, and All Around!
The same is true of staying safe, compliant, and productive at your facility.
From the moment you arrive on site - you have rules, regulations, guidelines, Safety Signs and Floor Markings, literature, instruction, messages, and a whirl of activity ALL around you.  And although it's extremely easy to become blind to them - you HAVE to pay close attention to them every second you're at your facility.  Failing to do so could result in everything from a mistake to a fatality.
Make a habit of looking Up, Down, and ALL Around at all times will contribute to keeping you and those you work with safe.

Yes, the holidays are almost upon us.
And yes, it's a great holiday song.
But the reason why we're saying, "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" - is because of the EXTRA time you have to devote to our favorite topic of all.  If you guessed presents - you're wrong.  It's SAFETY!
Along with Summer Shutdowns - this time of the year has a lot of people taking vacations.  And that means Maintenance and Safety Teams can canvas facilities and do what we're always reminding you of - constant and never ending improvement.
    It's the time to:

    • Clean, repair, replace, and/or give machinery, vehicles, and tools an extra look.
    • Tidy up and organize all areas.
    • Install new Floor Markings and Signs.
    • Assure all pedestrian and motor traffic are routed the best ways possible.
    • Inspect and test all Fire Extinguishers, Showers, Eye-Wash Stations.
    • Make sure all Exit Signs are in working order.
    • Take down old and/or put up new Guidelines, Policies, and Emergency Info.
    • Take inventory.
    • Assure everyone has all the proper PPE.
    • Walk the facility - and see if there's anything that needs to stop, improved, and/or added for optimum safety, organization, productivity, and efficiency.
    • Assure all licenses and testing are up-to-date.
    • And that's just a few of the things you can do!

The 5th S of The 5S Methodology is SUSTAIN.  Sustaining means creating a culture that follows the other 4 S's - Sort, Set, Shine, and Standardize - on a daily basis.
Doing this WILL make it THE most wonderful time of year - AND deliver the gift of SAFETY!Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Let me ask you a couple of questions.
Have you - or have you seen someone else:

    • Walk right in front of a Lift Truck and/or take a short-cut through a restricted area?
    • Ignore and/or talk over a message being delivered via Walkie Talkie / Intercom?
    • Have a close call with an item of clothes and/or lack of Safety Equipment?
    • Let a Lift Truck pull or carry you and/or have taken a ride on a Pallet Jack like a scooter?

All of these have one thing in common.
Sometimes the most simple rules being ignored are what lead to some of the most avoidable situations.
Here are 5 Basic Safety Tips that'll increase your chances of staying safe exponentially.

    1. Know the rules and regulations of your facility.  You can't follow what you're not aware of.
    2. When you're at work - you're there to WORK, not have fun.  Smile, be kind, be courteous, and take enjoyment and pride in what you're doing.  But remember, when you step foot on company property - it's time to be safe and professional.  Save the horseplay for home.
    3. Wear your uniform and Safety Equipment exactly as requested.  Even if it's uncomfortable, in your way, and/or some other reason - don't vary.
    4. Use the right tools and procedures in all aspects of your life - but especially at work.  This includes everything from simple Hand Tools, Heavy Duty Equipment, and YOUR body (With examples such as proper Lifting and Ergonomic Techniques).
    5. Pay attention!  And if you see something - say something.  In following these 5 Basic Safety Tips - you'll be amazed at how much more safe, productive, and organized you are.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
On today's Podcast - we're going to be revisiting Social Distancing Reminders.
When the COVID Lock downs were initially announced - we all "THOUGHT" it was going to be a short time period.
    Those couple of weeks extended.
Then not only did they extend, but the concerns heightened.
Eventually things started to level out a bit.
But now it appears we're in yet another round.
We don't know how long this round will last - and/or if it'll EVER stop.
So here are some tips to get your facility on its way to being successfully Socially Distanced.

    • To get started - know what regulations you’re required to follow - and what you want implemented. (This may vary from facility to facility)
    • Walk your facility and detail how and where you need to implement the wants and regulations of your Social Distancing Plans.  This may include - but is by no means limited to the following:
      • Assure staff are distanced by 6-foot work areas.
      • Staff are wearing masks and/or gloves wherever applicable.
      • Hygiene Procedures such as frequent hand washing, keeping fingers out of eyes and mouth, and covering your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing is being followed.
      • Install partitions between work areas.
      • Implement one-way traffic flows.
      • Post Social Distancing Safety Signs and Floor Markings.
      • Modify your picking strategy.
      • Integrate tool sanitation stations.
      • Create "touch free" order consolidation.
      • Implement zero-interaction delivery.
      • Consider staggering shifts.
      • Schedule breaks strategically.

We hope these tips assist in helping you, your facility, and your families to be safe!

Before starting our Podcast - we'd like to recognize Veterans Day 2020 - and thank all our amazing veterans for their service.  Today - and every day!
Have you ever heard the phrase "Slow And Steady Wins The Race"?
It refers to the race between the tortoise and the hare - and there are a lot of similarities you can draw from when it comes to productivity and safety.
Rushing through most anything generally causes corners to be cut. So you obviously want to work at a pace that ensures stability and accuracy throughout your entire shift.
We've covered this several times - and will continue to over and over because it's so important.  When safety is ignored for even a second - that's when accidents happen and tragedy can strike.  You might think you know better and/or feel a rule isn't important - but it's not your place to decide.  A decision like that affects you, your fellow staff, your facility, and production.
You had to know we'd side with the turtle.  After all - it was the one wearing a Safety Shell for protection!
All kidding aside - work hard, work smart, work safe - and you'll win the race!

In the United States - we just experienced a Tuesday Presidential Election.
There's USUALLY a winner declared by the end of the night - or at the very least, the following morning.  But not on THIS Warehouse Safety Tips Wednesday!
Believe it or not - this is Episode 46 of our podcast - and the before mentioned Presidential Race is for who will become the 46th President.
I bring this up because voting and safety have several things in common.
Here are just a few of the comparisons when it comes to the implementation of Safety Rules:

    • If you see something that needs addressed - you can campaign to make a change.
    • Sometimes things are discussed for a long time before anyone decides anything needs to be done.
    • Once a decision is made that something needs to be done - it's brought to management for final approval.
    • When something gets approved or turned down - some people are happy with the decision and others aren't.
    • Regardless of being happy or unhappy with decisions - you have to follow the rules that have been put into place.

You don't have to believe in potential hazards where you work and/or support the rules that attempt to prevent them - but adhering to them until the rules change will greatly increase the chances of keeping you and your co-workers out of harm's way.
In other words - we hope you place your vote in FAVOR of safety!

If your facility is like most.  You probably have one or all of the following.

    • A sign showing how many days have gone by accident-free (And hopefully the number is super high).
    • A glass case and/or bulletin board displaying various safety, emergency, and evacuation procedures.
    • A pre and/or post-shift Safety Briefing.
    • Regular Safety Meetings.
    • Ongoing Safety Training.

But when was the last time you REALLY took the time to look around your facility - and reviewed all the Safety in place?
Doing so will not only allow yourself to be aware of what's in place - but also allow you to see what may possibly need removed, changed, and/or added.  After all - part of a solid 6S Methodology is assuring constant and never-ending improvement.
This can include but is by no means limited to -

    • Assuring areas are free of clutter and arranged for maximum productivity and safety.
    • Reviewing all the signs and floor markings in your facility to assure they're visible, in good shape, and applicable to their placement.
    • Areas that are slick and/or wet have the proper mats, grip, signs, and/or are being kept dry regularly.
    • Chemical Showers and Eye Wash Stations are functioning.
    • Equipment, racks, and pallets are all in working condition.
    • Fire Extinguishers are up to date.
    • Exit Signs are all properly displayed and lit.
    • And that's just a few of the things you can look for!

Most accidents and safety issues can be prevented by just taking the time to pay attention to the above mentioned items and your surroundings.
And if doing so makes your "Days Without An Accident" sign go higher and higher and sends you home safe - then it's worth it!

  • S1 Ep43: Warehouse Safety Tips | Episode 43 | Creating A Regular Safety Day
    Warehouse Safety Tip Wednesday
On today's Podcast, we'll be covering creating a regular safety day, and kicking things off with Warehouse Safety Tip Wednesday - so stay tuned.

    Welcome to Warehouse Safety Tips!

You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

For the last 42 weeks in a row, we've been bringing you Warehouse Safety Tips every Monday.
We recently instituted a Monday Minute segment at our facility and thought maybe Warehouse Safety Tips Wednesdays had a good ring to it!  So going forward - we're going to bring you this Podcast on Wednesdays.
Do you have a day at YOUR facility dedicated to safety?
Keep in mind - the day doesn't have to be as regular as a Podcast.  Nor does it have to be A day.  It could be something as simple as a one minute tip during pre-shift announcements.  The point is, you do it.  "Out of sight, out of mind.", should NEVER be the case when it comes to safety.
Whether it's addressing new Safety Signs and/or Floor Markings, discussing new or changing Safety Standards / Practices, or going over Accident Reports (Of which we hope are NONE) - having times dedicated to safety, is a great idea!
We'll see you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tip Wednesday.  Until then - have a SAFE day!

Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
