If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
When you start driving a car - you get warnings of how important it is to be aware of your surroundings from almost every direction.
Operating Lift Trucks and other vehicles at your facility are no different.  You MUST be aware of your surroundings at all times!
We'll go into all the different things you should be watching out for on future Podcasts, but today we have a very specific obstacle we want to focus on.
    Columns.
If you've ever seen a racking system - you're well aware that it's essentially one big grid.
Items are placed within those grids - and almost always accessed by Lift Trucks.
Think for a bit about playing the game Jenga, stacking cards, and/or seeing a controlled demolition.  Taking out a portion of a structure can affect and/or destroy the integrity of the entire rack.
That's why paying attention to columns is of the utmost importance!
It's a simple message and you'd think it's common sense - but unfortunately, columns are damaged all the time.
Sometimes it's because someone misjudged proximity - or couldn't see over/around a load.  Regardless - most of the times Column Damage occurs, it could have been avoided by slowing down, following rules, and/or paying more attention.
Make Column Protection front of mind - and you'll greatly increase the safety of yourself, those you work with, the racking system at your facility, and the products contained within them.
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
If you've ever been to or worked in a warehouse - you know just how important safety is to both management and staff.  It's almost impossible to go 10 steps without seeing Safety Tape, Angles, Signs, and/or products.
It's these items that show us how to be safe and avoid danger in the workplace.  And if you're looking for the best products to make this happen - look no further than Mighty Line!

I had to run an errand yesterday.  I'd tell you it was an enjoyable one, but I'd be lying.  The errand was visiting both the Title Department and BMV.
This was the first time I'd visited either during the Covid Pandemic - and man alive was it distanced to the max!
There were plexiglass dividers, capacity limitations, PPE requirements, sanitizers, and distancing (With directions on the walls and floor).
Even though the numbers go down now and then - there are a lot of factors that point to Social Distancing being around for a while.
As I sat waiting my turn - I did what I normally do and took inventory of what and how they were doing to follow all the guidelines.
What I saw was handwritten signs and tape fashioned into boxes for where you were allowed to stand.  Did it get the job done?  Yes.  Did it look good?  No.  In addition - it could have been much more informative.
With the In-Stock and Customizable Floor Tape and Signs that are available today - there's no reason for doing things half-hearted.  Use Floor Tape and Signs that inform and at the same time are ready for the wear and tear of the people in your location.
As chance would have it - our sponsor of this Podcast provides all that and more.  Stay tuned for more info on how you can get yourself a sample.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
On one of our previous Podcasts, we spoke about the pros and cons of consistency.
If you're wondering what a con could possibly be - think of procrastination.  If you're constantly putting things off - that's using consistency as a disadvantage.
In following the 5S Methodology - obeying disadvantages goes directly against the first "S", Sort.  Within the 5S Methodology, sorting is eliminating all of the unnecessary items from a work area.  In this case, the unnecessary items being removed from the work area are disadvantages.
It should come as no surprise that the last "S" of the 5S Methodology is Sustain.
    Let's look at these words.

Consistency is conformity in the application of something.
Sustaining is to keep up or keep going.
Aren't consistency and sustaining almost one and the same?
If you're on the path of constant and never-ending improvement at your facility - obey those two words in an advantageous manner, and you'll be well on your way to success.

    Stay In Your Own Lane

You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Has anyone ever told you to, "Stay in your own lane!"?
Sometimes it's verbal.  Other times it might be acted out with sign language.  And in the context of warehouses and the other facilities we mention on this Podcast, it's more than likely in the form of signs, floor markings, and/or training.
In essence - it's staying where you're supposed to be.
This is one of the tips that could be most important to you.  Being in the wrong place at the right time can cause serious injury and even death.
Here are a few examples of what we're talking about.

    • Make sure you're not in the path of oncoming traffic.  This is true from the moment you arrive at work in the parking lot - to the sometimes hive-like activity of your facility.  And it's not just staying out of traffic.  If you're someone that's operating vehicles - make sure you're not in an area you're not supposed to be in.
    • As someone on foot - there are (Or should be) specific markings on where to travel.  Don't become "blind" to signs and floor markings telling you where you can and can't go.
    • Pay attention to where you're allowed to have your hands/arms.  Areas with Pinch/Crush Points are (Or should be) clearly marked.
    • When it comes to getting inside of machinery and/or areas where you need to stop production - make sure you implement the proper "Lock Out Tag Out" Procedures needed to alert staff not to resume production.
    • Make sure you're always wearing the correct PPE for the area you're in.  Even if you're allowed in an area - you need to be equipped properly.
    • Some areas - although safe - may have security restrictions.  Make sure you're cleared to be in an area before entering.

There are probably dozens of other examples - but these are a great start to get you thinking.
Stay in your own lane and you'll greatly increase your chances of staying safe!
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
You'll notice the title of our Podcast today is "Eyes UP Forks Down".  If you don't know what we mean by forks - we're referring to the forks on a Forklift.
Forklifts (Also referred to as Tow Motors or LIft Trucks) almost always require some sort of training and certification before operating.  Or SHOULD.  Regardless - here are few tips that'll greatly increase your chances of keeping yourself, your staff, and the equipment you're operating as safe as possible.

    • Before even getting on a forklift for the first time within a shift - do a safety check of the vehicle to make sure the wheels are in good condition and free of debris, that there aren't any leaks, that fuel and/or battery power are good, and that everything appears to be in good working order.  If something is out of place beyond the battery or fuel - be sure to alert management.

The next two things are the title of the Podcast.

    • When we say - keep your eyes up, we mean pay CLOSE attention to your surroundings (Especially Blind Spots).
    • Forks down should be interpreted just as it sounds.  Unlike operating other machinery - with a forklift, you literally have forks in front of you.  Whenever you're not unloading and/or lifting a load - be sure to have your forks as low to the ground as possible to avoid hitting someone and/or something.
    • In addition to the forks - much of the time you'll have items ON them.  Make sure you're always able to see around the load you're carrying - and have it as secure as possible.
    • You should always be mindful of your speed when operating any vehicle - but when you have a load, it's especially important to maintain a safe speed.
    • You never want to do a hard brake when carrying a load - as it could fly off your forks and/or shift forward causing damage and/or injury.
    • Sound your horn to let everyone know you're coming - and remember to give people on foot the right of way.
    • We mentioned checking your wheels to assure they're in good condition and free of debris - and you'll need to do the same for the areas you're driving on.  Be sure to watch for wet, slick, and/or debris-covered areas.
    • If the vehicle you're on has seat belts and/or harnesses - be sure to wear them.  Many injuries sustained by lift truck operators are from being thrown off and/or crushed by the vehicle they're operating.
    • Don't travel in areas you're not supposed to be in.

There are probably many other rules you could follow - but these will help you on your way to safely operating Forklifts at your facility.
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.

There's a quote out there that says, "If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign of?"
You can probably imagine - we GREATLY agree!  Now to clarify - we're defining empty as free of clutter, distraction, and/or nonsense.  NOT as lacking thought or being a dullard of sorts.
As a kid, when I'd hear "If you can lean - you can clean." - it would make me cringe.  But now - I know the importance (Both professionally and from a health standpoint) of working within a clean environment.
Adhering to The 5S Methodology of SHINE, we keep our areas and facility clean and organized - to keep everything around us easy, pleasing, and most importantly safe.

    Are You Listening?

You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

Today's message is a very simple one.

Don't be caught not paying attention on the job!  Specifically - not listening.
Now you might think we're saying that on the behalf of and/or to appease management.  Keeping management happy IS important - but your safety is even more important.
So what are a few areas you can focus on?

    • Briefings - If your facility is like others - from the moment you arrive, you're presented with briefings from the previous shifts.  Make sure you pay attention to them.
    • Announcements - Much like briefings - announcements can come in the form of person to person, via radio, and/or address systems.  Pay close attention because they could contain everything from lights being left on in the parking lot to potentially hazardous weather approaching (And everything in-between).
    • Machinery - Whether it's a specific sound a machine makes to alert you of something or something that sounds out of the ordinary - be sure to listen to machinery you're working with.
    • Alarms - This can be something as simple as a machine you're working on completing its task or as extreme as a fire and/or tornado approaching.
    • Vehicles - Of all the sounds you'll likely encounter at your facility - this is one of the most important ones to pay attention to.  There's a reason lift trucks have alerts when backing up and/or horns are sounded while driving.  It's to alert you that you need to pay extreme attention.  And much like machinery - if you're operating a vehicle, make sure you're listening to it as well.  Doing so could alert you to low fuel/battery life and/or engine trouble.
    • Fellow Staff - Throughout your shift, it's likely fellow staff will provide you with info.  Make sure you pay attention to what they tell you.
    • Your Inner Monolog - Although it's not an actual sound you'll hear with your ears - it's one you should be very aware of.  If something is nagging you and/or just doesn't appear to be right - be sure to listen to your gut.

As with most of our tips - this was just a high-level look at a few of the things you should be paying attention to.
Be a better listener - and you'll increase your chances of staying safer at work exponentially.
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.

When you hear the saying "Safe From Head To Toe" - what comes to mind?
As it pertains to this Podcast, we're talking about everything you wear to keep you safe at work.
This can be a myriad of items - especially when you include the Covid Pandemic we're currently in.  So to keep the list manageable - we'll cover the essentials.
Head | Hard Hat.   Wearing one will help you avoid bumping your head directly and/or having items fall on it.
Eyes | Safety Glasses and/or Shields.  These will help you avoid damage to your eyes and/or harmful particles affecting them.
Ears | Plugs and/or Muffs.  Even the most undetectable sounds can damage your hearing over time.  Wearing these will help prevent that.
Nose and Mouth | Masks and/or Respirators.  This is a PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) that has become all too familiar as of late.  They're used to avoid breathing in harmful fumes and particles present in the air.
Chest and Back | Reflective Vests, Harnesses, and/or Braces.  These items help support you, keep you from falling, and/or assure people can see you clearly.
Hands | Gloves.  Whether it's hot, cold, rough, and/or sharp surfaces - these will help keep your hands safe.
Body | Apparel.  This can include everything from flame retardant, heat resistance, hazmat, and/or general uniform to avoid you ruining your personal clothes.
Feet | Safety Boots.  Generally, steel-toed and slip-resistant - these will help you maintain your footing and help avoid damage to your feet.
As always this was just a high-level look at all the various PPE we utilize to stay safe and avoid injury.
And although they're associated with different parts of the body - they work in symphony together.   Regardless of how uncomfortable and/or inconvenient, they can be sometimes - remember they're in use to assist in sending you home safely after each shift.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
In some of the previous Podcasts - you've heard us mention a statement and/or thought process, that in our humble opinion is toxic to a Kaizen Environment.

Before covering that statement - we should probably define what Kaizen is as well (Just in case you're unaware of it.).

The word Kaizen comes from the words “Kai” (Which means change) and “Zen” (Which means to make good/better). Put them together – and you have the principle of constant improvement and/or a change for the better.
That toxic statement to a Kaizen Environment is, "That's the way we've always done it."
Just for the record - that statement can also carry positive results.  If your facility has a policy that the customer is ALWAYS right no matter what - that's not necessarily a bad thing to discontinue.
Where that statement becomes toxic, is when it halts improvement and/or moving forward.
Before the COVID Pandemic - Online Meetings, cancellations of in-person sales calls and events, Touchless Deliveries, strictly enforced use of PPE, and overall Social Distancing/Health would probably never have been implemented.  Some of those things aren't practices you necessarily want to have - but others have shown us costs that can be greatly eliminated and ways of doing things that are much safer.  But none of them would have been uncovered had a "That's the way we've always done it." system been followed.
Sometimes change involves moving forward AND taking steps backward.
Avoiding staying in one place and making "Kaizen" your thought process will always be better than saying,  "That's the way we've always done it."
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.

There are so many physical tools available to assist with safety.
Floor Markings, signs, lights, lasers, guards, clothing, gear - and the list goes on and on.
But there's a non-physical low tech and high-quality tool that is just as important - if not more so - than all of the before mentioned items.
    That tool is communication.
    Communication comes in many forms.
Because communication can be given in the form of a printed notice, a text, email - and other non voice variations, we'll stick to verbal communication.
Think of all the verbal communications you're part of at your facility (Including, but not limited to):

    • Info from fellow staff and/or management about the shift(s) prior to you coming in.
    • Everything that goes on during your shift - such as:
      • Training
      • Speaking with maintenance
      • Alerting staff and/or management to things such as issues and/or ideas for improvement.
      • General meetings.

    • Giving info to your fellow staff and/or management before ending your shift.

Just imagine all the things that could happen at a facility without proper communication.
So even though you may be wearing hearing protection and/or masks - it's still extremely important to use your ears and mouth as Safety Tools.
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
