And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Have you ever had a message that needed to be displayed immediately?
Think of the beginning of the COVID Pandemic.  Distancing needed to be adhered to - but custom tape and signs hadn't been created yet.  Imagine being able to write out messages on paper and then cover them with Clear Safety Tape.
A couple of other examples of this where something needs to be protected and seen would be -

    • Labeling areas that constantly change.
    • Barcodes and/or QR Codes.
    • Areas where tools go in specific spots and need to be labeled as such.

The uses go on and on.  You probably even thought of a way to implement it at your facility.
We constantly insert The 6S Methodology into our messages - and this one is no different.
If you believe in "A Place For Everything.  And Everything In Its Place" - then having everything properly labeled is a must!
And if assuring everything is in its place contributes to better safety - then we're all for it!
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.

If you've ever been in the middle of something and experienced a power outage - you know just how unexpected it can be.
And although you can't predict exactly when it'll happen - you CAN be prepared for when it does.
One of the first things you need to do is make sure you have all the tools and procedures in place BEFORE it occurs.
This includes - but isn't limited to:

    • Have specific routines in place should an outage occur.
    • Staying calm.
    • Having Emergency Power and Lighting in place at your facility.  And even more importantly - running frequent drills to assure it's working properly.
    • Making sure you have working flashlights available and the staff knows where they're located.  Make changing out the batteries on these items as part of a regular Safety Routine.
    • Have Emergency Floor Lighting and/or Glowing Safety Floor Tape in place to show staff where to navigate in the event of an outage.
    • Assuring equipment and/or machines that need to be shutdown with certain procedures are on backup systems wherever possible.  If the equipment isn't on a backup and properly shutdown - be very mindful of issues that could arise once the power is restored.
    • Taking a headcount to assure all staff is safe.
    • Knowing where all First Aid, Defibulator, and other Emergency Locations are - should staff get injured during the outage.
    • Having the Contact Info of everyone that needs to be alerted of issues.

You may go years without seeing an outage - or you might be in a location where it happens frequently.  Regardless - do your best to keep a level mind and stay as safe as possible during outages.
Although not mentioned above - try to note everything you're NOT prepared for, so you can remedy the situation in the future.
Doing this will lessen your chances of being caught off guard more and more as it occurs - and create a safer facility for you and your staff.

    Welcome to Warehouse Safety Tips!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Many of the tips we share on this Podcast have the same elements in common.  Those elements are paying attention, being aware of your surroundings, and slowing down.
Today we're giving tips on First Aid - and the above-mentioned elements are definitely part of the topic.
Paying attention is what everyone should be doing to avoid accidents and the need for First Aid in general.  Will it prevent ALL accidents?  No - but it's a great part of avoiding them!
If an accident does occur - it's time to be aware of your surroundings.  When it comes to needing First Aid - sometimes you'll need it and sometimes you might be assisting a fellow staff member with it.  But one thing is for sure.  NEITHER will be getting it if you're unaware of where it is.  Chances are your First Aid Station(s) will be clearly marked with a First Aid Safety Sign which will usually be Red or Green.  And unless it's a simple item (Such as an Aspirin or Bandaid) - it goes without saying that you should alert Management to any injuries.
The last tip is part of Accident Prevention and First Aid - and that's slowing down.  If you take things slow AND pay attention in general - many accidents will be avoided.  But when an accident does occur - calmer heads MUST prevail.  You have to know the procedures of your facility, who needs to be alerted, emergency numbers, the location of equipment, and what needs attention the most - and it all needs to be done rapidly but slowly/systematically as well.  Your actions during an accident - as either the one injured or the one helping them - can make major differences.
If you remember the first part of First Aid as overall safety - hopefully, these three tips help your Days Since An Injury Board Numbers go higher and higher.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
If you're fortunate enough to live and work in a location that's warm around the year - you can disregard the weather portion of this Podcast.  But there's still info that applies to all climates.
Locations experiencing the snow and ice that comes with this time of the year - probably know what's coming.
You'll notice the title of our Podcast today is "Stay Grounded".  We titled it that because slipping and/or falling on wet surfaces is no joke.
We've covered this topic before - but it's one that needs regular reminding.
Emergency Room visits exceed eight million per year due to falls. And of those falls - approximately 12 percent are slip and fall accidents.  What does this mean for facilities?  Of course, the lost safety for its staff - but also lost time and money.  And it CAN be avoided!
Whether it's because of staff tracking in snow and ice, spills, leaking machinery, condensation, or any other reasons for an area being slippery - there's a way to lessen and/or warn of it.
Here are just a few to get you started.
    • If you DO have snow and ice where you're at - stamp and wipe your shoes/boots off at entrances.
    • Have mats at entrances and areas that get slick.
    • Make sure there are floor markings and/or signs alerting staff that areas are slick.
    • Use floor markings and/or signs with non-slip properties.
    • Have fans and/or heaters that keep areas dry.
    • Have maintenance regularly mop slick areas (And of course alert staff of it)

There are many more ways to avoid slips and falls - but really it comes down to two things.  Pay attention to your surroundings and make surfaces as safe as possible.
If you do that - you'll increase your chances of staying ground and most importantly staying safe.
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
The last couple of weeks - we covered the first 3 S's of The 6S Methodology -  Sort (Seiri), Set in order (Seiton), and Shine (Seiso).

Just to recap - they break down as follows.

Sorting is categorizing items to determine what's necessary and/or unnecessary.

Setting In Order is organizing and arranging the items/equipment you use in the most efficient order.

And shining (Seiso) in the simplest of terms is cleaning.

That brings us to our remaining S's - Standardize (Seiketsu), Sustain (Shitsuke), and Safety.

The reason we're combining the last 3 S's together is that they go hand-in-hand with the first 3 S's.

    Cases in point.

Standardizing involves fine-tuning the first 3 S's into a routine.

Sustaining is taking that standardized routine - and making it second nature among staff.

And lastly - Safety (Which upgraded the 5S Methodology into the 6S Methodology) involves identifying hazards and implementing preventive steps to assure the previous S's are all being completed within a safe environment.

If you listened to Part 1 of our 6S Methodology Series - you remember there's a Japanese word synonymous with The 5S Methodology. That word is “Kaizen”. It comes from the words “Kai” (Which means change) and “Zen” (Which means to make good/better). Put them together – and you have the principle of constant improvement and/or a change for the better.

So does that mean once you find a routine that's good - you keep doing it forever?

    Of course not!

Once you get to the end - you go right back to the first S and start the whole process over again.

That ensures constant improvement - and works toward the ultimate goal of this Podcast - improved safety.

On last week's Podcast - we covered the 6S Methodology and the first "S" of it, Sort (Seiri).  Just to catch you up - that's where you sort and categorize items.
In teasing this week's Podcast - we said we'd be covering Set In Order.  But we actually have two "S's".  So in addition to Set In Order, we're also covering Shine.
Setting In Order (Seiton) is organizing and arranging the items/equipment you use in the most efficient order.
The ultimate goal of this step is to make your work area and overall facility as organized, productive, and logical as possible.
If anything you're doing feels like it could be done in less time and/or fewer steps - then this step is more than likely one you'll want to revisit.
Shining (Seiso) in the simplest of terms is cleaning.
If you've ever worked at a location where there are multiple shifts and/or several staff members working in the same area - then you've more than likely experienced what it's like to work in an untidy area.
Even though hearing it can sometimes make you cringe - if you have time to lean, you have time to clean.
Cleaning will make your immediate area more pleasing.  In addition - keeping your area, tools, and equipment clean will help to prevent injuries and assist in overall maintenance.
On our next Podcast - we'll cover the remaining "S's" - Standardize (Seiketsu), Sustain (Shitsuke), and Safety.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
If you're discussing organization and productivity within your facility, you're almost certain to cover 5S Methodology.  And if you add safety, now you're discussing the new version - 6S Methodology.

Developed in Japan – 5S Methodology is a philosophy that advocates using specific steps to organize the workplace as well as working practices. Its goals are to improve efficiency and eliminate waste as well as improving safety and morale in the workplace.

There's a Japanese word synonymous with The 5S Methodology.  That word is “Kaizen”.  It comes from the words “Kai” (Which means change) and “Zen” (Which means to make good/better). Put them together – and you have the principle of constant improvement and/or a change for the better.

For the next couple of Podcasts - we'd like to cover each step of the 6S Methodology, with examples of each one.

The first "S" we'll be covering is Sort (Seiri).  This step is where you sort and categorize items.  Doing this allows us to separate what is needed from what isn't – allowing only the bare essentials needed for operation, and removing everything else. The elimination of excessive items frees up space, saves time, improves process flow, and allows staff to operate efficiently.

With this step - one of the biggest achievements is reached when you've found the best way of doing something.

In past Podcasts, we've stated the worst thing you can ever hear as the answer to a question is, "Because that's how we've ALWAYS done it."

By deleting, tweaking, and/or adding to procedures - you test and test, until you nail down the perfect process.

And just in case you're wondering what the perfect process is - it's the best you can do at the time, but know you'll always be attempting to make it even better in the future.  In other words - you'll never reach perfection.

On our next Podcast - we'll cover the next "S" - Straighten or Set in Order (Seiton).

Until - then have a safe day!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Our message today covers the number one rule of safety.
Now you might be forming ideas in your mind about what that is.
Properly displayed and maintained Safety Floor Markings and Signs?  Those are great - but no.
Safety Equipment such as Steel Toe Boots, glasses, harnesses, vests, ear protection, hardhats, and/or gloves.  Once again, great - but no.
Well if it's not the first two items - it HAS to be the Safety Rules and Regulations set forth by your facility to follow.  Right?  NOPE!
All those things and many more we didn't mention are all great, but they all have one missing component that makes them that way.
    You MUST implement those things.
And not just one or a couple of them at a time, every now and again - but ALL of them, ALL of the time.
It even goes one step further than that.
You really need to hold those around you to the same standards.  Otherwise, what you're doing right will be diminished by what they're not doing.  In other words, even though you're being safe - someone that isn't may cause you harm.
And although you might be thinking it's not your job and/or place to say something - you NEED to!
Think of it this way.  What if you were pumping gas - and the person next to you lit up a cigarette?  Hopefully, you would tell them to put the cigarette out and/or immediately alert someone to have them do it.  Not doing so could spell disaster.
Keeping you, fellow staff, and your facility safe - is of the utmost importance.
Make sure it begins with you!

Have you ever had an extremely important document to work on and/or print - but when it was time to do so, the document didn't save and/or the printer was acting up?
Of course, you have!  It's Murphy's Law!  And in case you're unfamiliar with it, it means "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong".

The BIG question is - do you have a Backup Plan?

Although warehouses can experience saving and printer issues - the problems experienced are usually much bigger and usually more costly.

Speaking of cost - it usually grows exponentially when issues arise.

You don't want to be the cause for stopping production.  So having "What If?" Scenarios in place would be helpful for as many situations as you can dream up.

This can range from having spare parts and batteries at the ready - to having plans for what staff should do in the event of an issue (Such as shift focus to another area or start cleaning/maintenance).  As it pertains to safety - it might be walking your facility and putting together specific safety protocols for each specific area.

Having these procedures in place, just in case - might save valuable time, money, and your staff!

    Holiday Safety
On today's Warehouse Safety Tips Wednesday, we'll be covering Holiday Safety - so stay tuned.
    Welcome to Warehouse Safety Tips!

You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Today we're going to be discussing Holiday Safety - and while doing so we're going to break the rule of keeping things evergreen.  And no - we're NOT talking about Christmas Trees!
If you aren't familiar with what evergreen means in reference to media - simply put, it's not providing information that lets your audience know when the information was created (Such as time, dates, events, and/or seasons).  We already broke that evergreen wall with our Christmas Tree reference!
There ARE times where it's OK and/or unavoidable - and this is going to be one of 'em.
Let's address the "holiday" portion of our "Holiday Safety" title for today.  This Podcast is going live 2 days before Christmas.  And the reason we named it "Holiday Safety" - as opposed to "Safety Will Return After The First Of The Year" - is because safety doesn't take time off.  Or at least it SHOULDN'T!  This time of the year - it's very easy to have your thoughts divert from work and safety to that of family, faith, and overall celebration.  But safety needs to remain front of mind at ALL times!  It's in those moments of distraction or hurry where accidents occur.
Next - much like most of 2020 - we're still in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic.  So in addition to the regular Safety Protocols - Social Distancing, PPE, and enhanced hygiene are also part of our Holiday Safety.  We still have a long time to go with this current pandemic - but long after it's out of the headlines, there's a VERY good chance the protocols will remain.
So it may not have fireworks, candy, or a big meal with all the trimmings associated with it - but Safety is a holiday worth celebrating EVERY day!
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
