    Safety Engagements
On today's Podcast - we're going to be talking about Safety Engagement. So stay tuned.
You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Engagement can come in the form of our social media posts that we put out - the likes, the people that follow, the shares, and everything that has to do with the good and the bad that we see in safety out there.

Now, if it's in the case of good things we see - we may very well be getting in touch with you. We'd like to interview and showcase you. We'd like to talk about the tips, tricks, and nuggets of safety that you have found that provide that whole CANI (Constant and never-ending improvement) Mentality at your location or facility.

So that's one of the things that we're going to be doing.
The second thing is we're going to be going through and trying to find real-world examples of things to showcase.  To show you how things are affecting safety. One of the very first things I want to showcase is going to be a video that was out there on the internet.  It showed a couple of gentlemen going underneath a huge, huge piece of equipment.  And just how many things were so horribly wrong with that situation. If you're out there and you're doing something where you say, "You know what?  We've done this a thousand times and it was only this time that something went bad."  That's probably a really good indication of something that you're really not supposed to be doing. You don't want to do the things that go against safety - even if it's that one time that you were doing it that something happened.  Because it's in that time that just horrible things can happen.
In essence - make sure that you recognize safety at all times.  No matter what!
Next is a situation that we had with some AGV magnetic stripping.  That's an automated guided vehicle. If you've ever seen a robot in a warehouse or a facility, or maybe you drive a lift truck through racking systems.  You know that when you get in the AGV strips, many times the vehicle's guiding systems will take over to where there's no possible way for you to bump into the racking.  It's just a way to have vehicles either be guided by themselves, or have the navigation taken over temporarily.  If you have a situation like that, and you're trying to protect those strips, some customers will put tape over them. Now we have a client that had some tape that was going over AGV Strips and they were noticing splitting on the tape.  But it was because the vehicles were being driven over what should have been a much narrower strip of tape as opposed to a wide piece of tape.  It's examples such as that, that we want to recognize and bring to the forefront so that people have shared solutions to make their job easier.
We want to share anything and everything that is going to help you make safety easier to implement in your location.
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
If you've ever been to or worked in a warehouse - you know just how important safety is to both management and staff.  It's almost impossible to go 10 steps without seeing Safety Tape, Angles, Signs, and/o

Have you ever touched a hot pan, lost work you'd spent hours on because auto-save wasn't on, and/or run out of gas?
Maybe you've experienced one and/or all of the above situations - but the point is, they should have taught you valuable lessons.
Safety Mistakes are no different.  Well - that's not ACTUALLY true.  The previously mentioned mistakes won't usually put you in harm and/or death's way - whereas Safety Mistakes CAN!
    But if you've ever -

    • Banged your head without wearing a hard hat.
    • Hurt your hands while not wearing gloves.
    • Had something come close to and/or hit your eye while not wearing safety glasses.
    • Strained your back because you weren't wearing a Weight Belt.
    • Almost fell because you didn't have on a harness.
    • And/or ANY other near miss.

Then you probably know and share the value of wearing the proper PPE (Personal Protection Equipment).
Safety Mistakes and close calls aren't good to experience - but they ARE great teachers!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
On a previous Podcast - I mentioned how someone had contacted me about creating a Podcast, and how they were impressed by the fact that I'd done so many weeks in a row.  At the time of that statement, this Podcast had 52 episodes in a row. Our podcast today is Episode 80 - and we're STILL on our unblemished streak of never missing a week.  And please don't take that as a humblebrag.  Instead, take it as a fulfilled promise.  That's what we were supposed to do.  When we started this Podcast, we intended on delivering a weekly episode.  And since we know you expect that now - we deliver on your expectations.  Consistency is KEY!

Safety is NO different!  Once again, consistency is KEY!

When you hired on at your facility, you stated you'd be as safe as possible all the time.  And that's what all the staff and management around you expect.

It's that consistent focus on safety that keeps you, everyone around you, and your facility safe and as accident-free as possible.  You can't miss even a second!

Now imagine the pride you'll take in seeing the "No Accidents In __#__ Days" sign in double, triple, and even larger numbers!

And when someone compliments you on your streak - you'll say, "That's what we're SUPPOSED to do!  Because we pride ourselves on Safety!"

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Have you ever watched a movie or TV Show with guards and/or lookouts reporting back to base on Walkie Talkies?  They'll say things like, "Area 25 is secure." or "Sector Nine all clear."  And while watching it - you might think to yourself, "Is all this really necessary?" The answer can be a little tricky - so I'll phrase it this way.  It might be - UNTIL it's not.  What I mean by that is this.  At the moment a breach and/or a situation DOES occur - you're glad you have your bases covered.
Situations can change in an INSTANT!
The safety rules and protocols at a facility are NO different.
As staff - you might hate wearing the required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), following procedures such as Lock Out / Tag Out, and/or operating within the rules of your facility.  And just for the record - accidents CAN happen whether you're obeying safety or not.  But there's MUCH a higher likelihood of something occurring when you aren't.  And people almost always say the same things when it does.

    • "I only took my Safety Glasses off for a second, when the debris hit my eye."
    • "I had removed my Hard Hat to wipe my head when the part fell on it."
    • "I didn't shut the machine down because I was only going to push a piece that was lodged when the press came down on my hand."
    • "We've done it hundreds of times before and NOTHING happened."
    • And DOZENS of stories like it!

The point being - things happen in an instant.
So you HAVE to be as prepared as possible!
And in the case of Safety, that means following ALL the rules ALL the time - and be ready for the unexpected in an instant.

If you watch or listen to the news, have been outside, and/or have been paying attention to Social Media - you know that Social Distancing Restrictions are being lifted all over the world.
Here in the United States - mask-wearing and floor signs indicating where to stand are being seen less and less every day.
The same thing is occurring in warehouses and other facilities as well.  But even though Social Distancing Restrictions are being lifted - remember, SAFETY Rules and Restrictions are still firmly in place.  Or at least they SHOULD be!
    Make sure you're:

    • Paying extremely close attention to your work area and surrounding areas.
    • Wearing all the appropriate and recommended PPE (Personal Protection Equipment - including but not limited to boots, gloves, goggles, earplugs or earphones, braces, and hard hats.)
    • Doing regular Safety and Maintenance Checks on the tools and equipment you use.
    • And last, but certainly not least - following any 5/6S Procedures not mentioned here.

Some restrictions might come and go - but SAFETY is something that should be increased and constantly improved upon, NOT lessened!

Have you ever heard the phrase, "He/she's a self-made man/woman"?
If so - have you ever wondered exactly how they were able to accomplish it?
It's NO doubt there are people in this world who have started with nothing and/or have had the deck stacked against them.  However, it's extremely unlikely that the success stories can honestly say they were 100% self-made.  What's more likely is they had an individual (Or a numerous amount) who took them under their wing, read books, watched and/or listened to training, and/or mirrored the success of others to become SELF-made.
Safety at your facility should be no different.
Every day, businesses face a myriad of safety challenges. To ensure workplace safety, workers must be aware of these hazards and know the steps to mitigate or prevent incidents.  But if you ONLY focus on the situations YOU encounter and don't take into account what those around you and/or at other locations have experienced - you're only going to have a small piece of the puzzle.
This Podcast, site, and Social Media Posts attempt to be part of your circle of influence.  If we can spark just one idea you hadn't thought of and/or revisit something you hadn't addressed in while - then we've done what we've set out to do.
Our goal is simple.  We want you to be as safe as possible, regularly grow your safety/organization/productivity methods, and go home safely at night with the knowledge that you're returning to a safe facility tomorrow.

If you've ever worked in a factory - you've probably experienced a Summer and/or Holiday (Usually Thanksgiving or Christmas) Shutdown.
These shutdowns usually occur during slower times of the year - and are usually only staffed by maintenance and volunteers.  The overall idea is to tackle maintenance, cleaning, and/or changeovers without the entire staff and operation being present.
However - working in a warehouse, you know shutdowns aren't always an option.  Especially if you work in a distribution setting where there's a hive-like hustle and bustle 24/7/365.
But that doesn't mean you can't adopt a Shutdown Mentality.
If you follow a 5S/6S (With Safety Included) Methodology at your location - you're pretty much already doing it.
In the simplest of terms - it's the organization, cleanliness, and a continued quest of making things better.
Some tasks - such as putting down new tape and/or the above-mentioned changeover or maintenance of equipment, still might require temporarily limiting access to a certain area.
    But if you keep a Shutdown Mentality - it's likely you'll create a workplace that's always top-notch.

When preparing for the Podcast today, I noticed we were nearing the halfway mark of episodes for the year.  It doesn't even seem possible!
I had a client contact me a while back praising me for not having missed a single weekly episode.  After our exchange - I found it cool as well.
This episode is Number 75.  If we were being given a milestone gift - it would be our Diamond Episode.
I tell you the above info for two reasons.
First - when you initially start something and implement change, you can't see what's ahead.  So since planning and foresight are mental - we dependent upon hindsight to examine what we've been able to accomplish.
    When you look back -

    • Focus on what worked - and how you can make it even better.
    • Note what didn't work.  Figure out what happened and what needs to be done to avoid it in the future.
    • Celebrate the wins!
    • Start making plans on what you're going to implement next.

Second - we mentioned this would be considered our Diamond Episode.
If you walk around your facility - you'd be amazed to see just how many "Diamonds In The Rough" there are!
Schedule weekly walkthroughs - ESPECIALLY with new staff members and/or people that don't usually work in the areas being examined - and just look for potential changes you could make.
Before you know it - you'll be at week number 75 saying, "It doesn't even seem possible that we've been doing this for almost a year and a half!"
Doing so will make your facility hum like a finely tuned race car - and more than likely increase organization, productivity, profit, and most importantly SAFETY!

A few Podcasts ago - I spoke about an errand I had to run to the BMV.   The title of that Podcast was "Social Distancing In Style".

On that Podcast - I mentioned that as I sat waiting my turn - I did what I normally do and took inventory of what and how they were doing to follow all the guidelines for Social Distancing.  What I saw was tape fashioned into boxes for where you were allowed to stand.  Did it get the job done?  Yes.  Did it look good and/or was it durable?  No.

Just because you don't choose to do "Social Distancing In Style", doesn't mean you have to call it in and make it look unprofessional.
So what's a solution you might be asking?
Segments.  These are small strips of Safety Tape that:
    • Come in a variety of colors to match the theme of your facility.
    • Come in a variety of widths to meet your needs.
    • Are more attractive and durable than regular tape.
    • Can be easily put down and taken up.

And they aren't just for Social Distancing.  You can use them for anything you need to mark off and/or bring attention to at your facility.
These and all the products and practices we mention are all meant to make your facility organized and most importantly SAFE!

    • Mighty Line Tape is 7 times thicker than the average Safety Floor Tape.
    • Mighty Line's Signs and Marking come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes.  And if they don't have what you're looking for in stock - their Customize It Program allows you to create exactly wha

    Everything In Its Place?
On today's Podcast,  we'll be covering organization - so stay tuned.

One of the things we revisit often here on our Podcast is The 5S (6S - When you include SAFETY) Methodology.
The Elevator Speech version of this methodology is, "A Place For Everything, And Everything In Its Place."
When you say that phrase - it can be simple or complex.
Just think about all the ways you could break it down!  It's MINDBLOWING!
But since we do our best to keep things short and to the point - we're going to just focus on two forms of organization.
The first form of organization we want to cover is your Physical Workspace.  This is the area you work within - as well as your overall facility.
Take a hard look at your workspace and use the following questions to spark an organization frenzy.

    • Is everything around me necessary to doing my job?
    • Of the things that remain from the previous question - is everything in the most efficient position?
    • Is everything as clean and sanitary as possible?
    • Are the duties, practices, and placement of everything you use and do easy to understand?
    • Can you achieve Quality Control over what you do that repeated over and over again?

The second form of organization we want to cover is your Mental Workspace.  This is the one area you complete control over.
There's an overwhelming chance that what you do isn't forced.  You may NEED the job - but you're not being MADE to do it.  Thus, if you're there - you're there by your own choice.  Because of this - regardless of what happens, you must make the best of what you have EVERY day!  Your Mental Attitude is the one thing that CAN always be controlled.
With that said - here are a few ideas to help that along.

    • Decide that no matter what - you're going to approach everything with a positive attitude.
    • Figure out ways to constantly improve on what you do.

It's easy to say there's "A Place For Everything, And Everything In Its Place." - but putting it into action will assist in making almost every aspect of your day better.
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
If you've ever been to or worked in a warehouse - you know just how important safety is to both management and staff.  It's almost impossible to go 10 steps without seeing Safety Tape, Angles, Signs, and/or products.
