    One Step At A Time
On today's podcast - we're going to be covering streamlining tasks. So stay tuned.

If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Many of the topics for this podcast come from a NON-Safety origin.  Our topic today is one of those.

Do you believe in Multitasking?  More importantly, have you ever been asked if you're good at it?  I feel like it's one of those questions interviewers ask in order to see how full of bologna you are!

I'm sure many people "think" they're good at multitasking - but in all likelihood, they're probably not.  Why do I feel the idea of multitasking is bologna and that people can't do it effectively?  Simply put - you can't ride two horses with one butt!

Can people balance on a ball while hula hooping and juggling?  YEP!  But trust me - even though that could be considered multitasking, it's more A LOT of practice combined into a routine.

What multitasking - attempting to do several things at the same time - actually does is keep you constantly distracted and slows you down.  Ultimately, it decreases overall productivity and focus.

So how do you fix it?  The 5S Methodology!  It has us eliminate all items other than those we need, arrange and use them in the most effective way possible, and constantly monitor the situation to assure it's been done as streamlined and safe as possible.
The old sayings we've heard all our lives have left us clues.
    "Inch-by-inch it's a cinch.  Mile-by-mile it's a trial."
"How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time."
    And DOZENS more!
The overarching message is the same with all of them.  Don't try to do everything at once.  Instead, break tasks into smaller tasks and knock them out one by one until complete.
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
If you've ever been to or worked in a warehouse - you know just how important safety is to both management and staff.  It's almost impossible to go 10 steps without seeing Safety Tape, Angles, Signs, and/or products.
It's these items that show us how to be safe and avoid danger in the workplace.  And if you're looking for the best products to make this happen - look no further than Mighty Line!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
What do Summer, Holidays, and end-of-year Vacation Days all have in common?  Shutdowns and/or much less staff and production.

So what does that have to do with Safety?

The less staff and overall production - the more attention that can be given to inspection and walk-throughs.  And it can be done without rushing and/or getting in the way.

Think of the difference between putting down new safety tape and signs during production - or doing it with everything partially or completely shut down.  The second option is much easier to deal with!

But it's not just the physical tasks - such as testing safety equipment, taking inventory of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), assuring safety lights and signs are working, and/or making sure all Fire Extinguishers / First Aid Kits / Chemical Showers / Defibrillators / and EyeWash Stations are up to date and/or in working order.  Using the absence of staff and production - can help you think about ways to make your facility safer and more organized.  You can walk your facility and implement the 5S Methodology at several stopping points to assure there's a place for everything and everything is in its place.

Taking the time to work on the physical and mental aspects of safety during slow and stopped production will help you make your facility safer, more organized, and productive than ever.

I often reference something that happened when I was right at a year of doing this podcast. A person contacted me about doing some social media and was impressed by the consistency of our show. If you're consistently posting new episodes in podcasting, you're most likely in the top 15% - or higher - of podcasters.  This episode marks triple digits. That's right - 100 episodes! 100 weeks in a row - never having missed even one.  Don't take that as bragging - but instead as pride in being able to consistently complete what was hired to do.

This episode is entitled, "You Against You". It's about what you do when nobody is looking at your facility that matters the most.

The writing for portions of this podcast was assisted by AI (Artificial Intelligence). As I input information into it, it learns what I want more information about. The more information I provide, the better the learning gets - and the better the information that pops out is.

As employees, we do the same thing. We're given information, we work, situations occur (Sometimes good sometimes bad), and we learn from those situations.

It's easy to forget about safety when nobody's looking. But it's what you do when management isn't watching that's most important to your safety.  The "you against you" mentality of safety is one you just have to embrace.   When you neglect to follow safety procedures, wear the required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), and/or do anything outside of the rules of your facility - you might think you're getting away with something, but you're only fooling yourself.  YOU have to be your supervisor when you're on your own and/or away from management.  You need to be proactive, know how to access resources, and follow procedures so you can prevent issues and stay safe on the job.

This podcast series helps you make the right decisions, even when no one is watching.  We keep each episode short and to the point - so you can easily consume on your ride to work and/or just before starting your shift.  Keeping your workplace safe and injury-free with these helpful tips to improve your awareness is what we strive to do.  Hopefully, it will help you remember what you need to do when it comes to safely operating machinery, handling materials, and following health and safety policies.

Safety is everybody's business - and we're in the business of keeping you and your facility safe!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
When it comes to examining safety at your facility, there are probably several items that get immediate attention - such as (Including, but not limited to):

    • Fire Extinguishers are present and within inspection guidelines.
    • Exit Signs are all properly lit.
    • Safety Tape and Signs are all in good shape and visible.
    • Important items and locations such as Eye Wash Stations, Chemical Showers, Fire Extinguishers, First Aid Kits, and Defibrillators are all clearly marked and visible.

The above-mentioned items - are things you KNOW to check.
When we say "Examining Safety" - what we're looking for are the things that aren't on the checklist.
You can find things like this by:

    • Standing in an area for 10-15 minutes, and paying close attention to everything that occurs.  What are things that happened or didn't happen during the time that could impact safety?
    • Observe how the staff operates for an hour.  What things did they do that contributed to or took away from safety?
    • Walking the facility to look for any potential safety hazards.

We listed 3 items you can do to examine safety - but the list could contain dozens (If not hundreds) of items.
But you don't have to do them all at once.  Break them up into daily and/or weekly tasks - and just watch the improvements come in time.
Part of our 5S Methodology is "Sustain".  It's the "S" that encourages us to maintain and improve every day.  Examining safety on a regular basis and constantly improving upon it will make the implementation of "Sustaining" much easier.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Many of our messages are simple and to the point.  And as I've mentioned in past episodes - many of the messages we deliver on this podcast come from experiences in facilities and/or life.

Our message today is one from life - but certainly one that happens in facilities all the time, and that's slipping.
Our son plays high school football.  This time of the year in Ohio, it's not out of the ordinary for there to be rain, snow, and/or ice present.  But for what I'm about to mention - just being damp is enough.  Enough for what?  Enough to make metal bleachers become incredibly slippery to walk on.  Before finding a seat this week - I almost wiped out twice in just a couple of minutes.  At the same game - there were kids running and sliding on the bleachers ("Risky Business" Style) too.
A month or so ago, I mentioned we've covered this topic before - and that we'd cover it again.  This situation is no different.  It's JUST that important!
I mentioned the following items as potential ways to cut down incidents:
    • If you're in an area with regular rain, snow, and/or ice - stamp and wipe your shoes/boots off at entrances.
    • Have mats and/or fans at entrances and areas that get slick.
    • Make sure there are floor markings and/or signs alerting staff that areas are slick.
    • Use floor markings and/or signs with non-slip properties.  Anything that has a grip to it is ideal.
    • Have maintenance regularly mop slick areas.
    • And one of THE most important tips of all - if you see an area is wet or slick, alert the proper people and do one or several of the before mentioned tips.

Something I neglected to mention that should be common sense but isn't - is not taking chances and/or participating in horseplay.
Much like the above-mentioned kids purposely sliding - even though it's a movie reference, it IS Risky Business!
If you know an area is one where slips and falls are possible, work with maintenance and management to remedy the situation as thoroughly as possible.
And even though it might take you back to your youth and/or look fun - NEVER try to slide and/or take part in any horseplay while at work.
Your safety and the safety of your co-workers should never SLIP your mind!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
In one of our previous episodes, we spoke about never assuming when it comes to safety.

If you work in a facility that contains AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) this is especially true.

AGVs follow either a guided wire placed in the ground or tape to do automated tasks.  In addition to following a specific path, these AGV's also have sensors that detect items in their path.  When this occurs, they're supposed to give an audible warning and/or stop.  But, as with everything - things don't always go as planned.  Keeping in mind that you should always assume all vehicles cannot see you - these AGV's are no different.
Be sure to stay clear of the paths these AGV's travel on - and if you do have to work in their path, watch and listen for them.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Many of the podcasts we come up with mirror our daily lives.  Our podcast today is no different.
I just finished speaking to our daughter, who's attending college all the way across the country.   She's coming home to visit in a few days and asked if we could pay for her to have a carry-on for her flights.  Based on previous flights - I told her she would be permitted a carry-on as part of her ticket price.  I assumed it would be the same for this flight.
Upon checking - I found out they'd changed their policy and my assumption was incorrect.
Have you ever heard what happens when you assume?
Since we keep things Rated PG as possible - let's just say it's not a good practice.  ESPECIALLY when it comes to safety!
Although I JUST told you not to assume when it comes to safety - it's safe to assume that guessing you're right is usually a bad idea.
    Examples of this could be:

    • Not seeing any indication of a Lockout/Tagout - and starting up a machine without any other further inspection.
    • Eyeballing the height of an entrance while driving a lift truck and thinking you'll clear it.
    • Driving through an area you're not supposed to be in because you think nobody will be there.
    • Neglecting to wear required PPE because you're only going to be in an area for a very short time.

All of these assumptions - and MANY more not mentioned could all result in anything from minor damage to death.
The point is - it's NOT worth assuming!
Many situations that could have been avoided were things that happened after chances had been taken several times over.   All rules - no matter how trivial they may be perceived - are in place for a reason.  Keep yourself, your fellow employees, and your facility safe and sound by never assuming and following the rules at all times!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
On many of our podcasts - we talk about the importance of paying attention to Safety Floor Signs and Tape.  But, something that's just as important is listening.
This could include - but isn't limited to:

    • Alarms or Buzzers indicating the start, errors, and/or completions of machinery.
    • Horns from vehicles and/or lift trucks.
    • Speakers with updates, announcements, and/or warnings.
    • Visitors, staff, and/or management speaking to you and/or trying to get your attention.
    • Vehicles and/or lift trucks backing up.

You need to listen for all of the above sounds that are applicable to your facilities (As well as ones not listed above).
And in order to keep your listening skills as sharp as possible - be sure to keep your hearing protected by wearing protection everywhere it's suggested and at all times while in those areas.
Although damage can occur in an instant - it's usually the continued exposure to sound without protection that damages hearing.
So make sure your Hearing PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) such as earplugs and/or earmuffs are part of your overall protection checklist whenever and wherever applicable.
Not only will Hearing PPE protect your ears - it'll assure you're able to keep listening to this podcast.  And we REALLY like that sort of safety!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
It's Fall!  We LOVE the season - but DO NOT like the action!
Slip and Fall Prevention isn't a new topic to this podcast.
We've covered it before, we're going to cover it today, when Winter arrives in areas that get snow and ice - we'll talk about it more, and it'll keep coming up after that.
Do you see a trend here?  It's just THAT important!
We aren't naive, and fully realize some accidents just happen.  But, notice we said "PREVENTION"?  When it comes to safety, anything we can do to prevent things BEFORE they happen - we're going to harp on it over and over again.
In previous podcasts - we mentioned that Emergency Room visits exceed eight million per year due to falls.  Although we hope it's not - that number is probably MUCH higher now!  And of those falls - approximately 12 percent are slip and fall accidents.  What does this mean for facilities?  Of course, the lost safety for its staff - but also lost time and money.  And it CAN be avoided!  Once again - PREVENTION!
So what can you do to make your facility safe from slips and falls?  Here are several tips to get started.

    • Have maintenance regularly mop slick areas.
    • And one of THE most important tips of all - if you see an area is wet or slick, alert the proper people and do one or several of the before mentioned tips.

By just taking extra time at the moment - we'll save a lot of time and money in the future, and most importantly - make our facilities and staff safe.

    The Structure Of Safety
On today's podcast - we're going to be covering getting creative with structure. So stay tuned.
You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

On our last podcast - I spoke about an artist named Christopher Paul Dean, who uses Safety Floor Tape in his artwork.  The reason we showcased him was his out-of-the-box thinking.

This week - I was trying to exercise my own out-of-the-box thinking, and it led me to the dual meanings of words.  Specifically the word "Structure".

When it comes to safety - I found the Oxford Dictionary's verb definition to be most fitting.  It's defined as:

Construct or arrange according to a plan; give a pattern or organization to:
Doesn't that sound like the 5 and 6S Methodology we've covered in many of our podcasts?  Plans are a must when it comes to safety.  Remember what Benjamin Frankin said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!”.
But having a plan isn't enough.  To quote Benjamin Franking one more time, "Energy and persistence conquer all things.".  The energy he speaks of is action.  The persistence is doing it over and over again until complete.  Of course, we know that safety shouldn't have a summit we ever reach.  But instead - constantly striving to improve.
I mentioned dual meanings.  From what you apply safety to,  I found the Oxford Dictionary's noun definition to be most fitting.  It's defined as:

A building or other object constructed from several parts.

When working within your facility - be sure you're ever mindful of the actual structure around you.  I mean that in a literal sense.  Especially when operating equipment such as lift trucks.
Pay extra attention to racks and posts.  Running into these structures can cause everything from simple damage to a devasting collapse of either a rack and/or portion of your building.
Whether it's the guidelines you have in place or the physical items you apply them to - the structure of safety is something you want to be thinking about and acting on.
