    Stop Sign Awareness
On today's podcast - we're going to be covering Stop Sign Awareness. So stay tuned.
You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Today we're going to be talking about  Stop Sign Awareness.
Right from the start - it's not just the classic Red Stop Sign we're referring to here.  This podcast includes lights, signs, tape, and displays with a Stop Message associated with them.
Have you ever had to work in an environment that smells REALLY bad?  When you first arrive - you think, "How do people deal with this?!?"  A few minutes later - you can hardly smell any longer.  You just get used to it.
The exact same thing happens with visuals.  When you first see a sign, tape, display, and/or light - for a while, they'll catch your attention.  But as time goes by - they eventually become invisible to you.  You might retain the muscle memory of stopping at certain areas - but many times, don't actually see the visual.
Do you see how this could be extremely dangerous?  It might go days, weeks, and months before an issue occurs - but eventually will.
And keep in mind - it might not be the person that's supposed to be seeing the visual that's the issue.  It might be someone passing through an area - that's clearly marked to avoid - that causes the issue.
Regardless of who is responsible for not following the "signs" - the first mistake might be their last.
It's vital that Safety Teams and/or management make paying attention to ALL the signs - Stop and otherwise - a top priority.  This is not something you put in a manual and assume people will just do it.  You have to train and revisit that training on a regular basis.  Otherwise, it and other safety procedures will become invisible to those that need to see them.
We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Today we're going to be talking about Stair Safety.
Staircases are unavoidable at many locations, but keep in mind that they can be dangerous. Stair slip, trip, and fall-related accidents frequently occur in warehouses and factories more than you could ever imagine - and we want to make sure that you and your fellow employees are safe.
Although a simple list - here are a few steps (No Pun Intended) to greatly increase your chances of safely navigating stairs at your facility.
    • Always keep stairs free of all obstacles and debris.
    • Make sure stairs are kept as dry as possible. Hopefully, the stairs are slip-proof if you work in an area where surfaces stay wet and slick. If not - be sure to regularly dry stairs, keep fans blowing on the stairs, and add a product that adds an anti-slip via grit/grip.
    • If you're carrying something - make sure you can see your feet and surroundings.
    • Use railings whenever possible.
    • NEVER participate in horseplay on or around stairs!
    • Take your time navigating stairs. Don't run up or down and attempt to skip stairs.
    • Make sure you communicate with people going up and down stairways.
    • If you see an issue you can't handle - be sure to let maintenance and management know immediately.
    • Last but certainly not least - the number one tip is PAY ATTENTION! This step alone will eliminate most issues.

The most important thing to remember is that every employee has the right to work in a safe and secure environment. If you don't provide Stair Safety in your facility, it's a violation of OSHA regulations and an unsafe working environment for your employees.
To remedy this situation, you need to identify the problem immediately and fix it. Your facility can accomplish avoiding issues through education and training for your employees to understand the dangers of using hazardous stairs and how to prevent injuries by using proper steps at all times. You can also put up clear signs, so employees know which stairs are safe to use at all times. If you follow these guidelines and take the necessary precautions, your warehouse or factory will be operating safely and efficiently for years to come.

If you've ever played a game like Monopoly, Chutes & Ladders, and/or Life - you're familiar with following a path.
Were you able to see your facility from above - you'd probably see similar paths to follow.  These paths usually wind in and out of what we call work zones.  These are the areas where production, maintenance, and/or some sort of activity is taking place - and are usually limited to those who are supposed to be there.
Sticking with the game references from above - it would be awesome if work zones were like the game Operation.  Where every time you ventured into areas you didn't belong in, there was a loud buzz.  Unfortunately, we're usually limited to simple signs and/or lines.  And unlike the buzz of Operation - when it happens in real life, people can get injured and/or killed when venturing into the wrong areas.
On this podcast, we constantly reference doing walk-throughs of your facility to see areas where you could improve safety, productivity, and organization.  If you were to do this in reference to walkways and work zones - how would your facility rate for the effectiveness of labeling the two?  Would you trust a visitor to be safe in knowing where to go without issue?  If not - then you have work to do.  If so - then be sure to constantly revisit your layouts to try and improve the effectiveness even more.
As simple as it sounds - the use of colors we're all accustomed to can work best.  The green means go, yellow means caution, and red means stop variations of a stoplight are universally recognized safety colors.
Letting people know where they can and can't go will greatly contribute to the safety of your facility!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
One of the foundations we reference and revisit here on our podcast is The 5S Methodology.  We've covered it and will continue to cover it over and over again because if implemented it's part of the process that provides constant and never-ending improvement within your facility.
The 5th S of The 5S Methodology is SUSTAIN.  Sustaining is taking the first 4 S's (Sort, Straighten, Shine, and Standardize) and striving to not only keep them implemented - but also improve upon them as you go.  So with that in mind - every new day at your facility should be the safest, most organized, and most productive day at your facility.  That's why we entitled this podcast "Practice Makes Perfect".
When you think of the "Day Since An Accident"  Sign seen at factories and facilities - it not only gives an update of how things are going, but also a reminder of staying safe.  In other words - you HAVE to practice/implement The 5S Methodology for it to work.
If you don't already have one - be sure to create a team that puts the actions of The 5S Methodology into place EVERY day.  By making it part of everything you do - you'll make constant and never-ending improvement part of EVERY day as well.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
When I was younger, I worked in several factory/warehouse facilities.  One of the areas that almost always had the most damage, neglect, and chaos was the battery charging area.  This area was notorious for batteries left unplugged, loaded incorrectly, and/or batteries and their accessories left broke and/or miskept for the next person.  It was maddening trying to deal with that area.  Not only were you behind due to needing a battery change - but the extra time needed to deal with what the persons before you had done only intensified the situation.
Imagine how things would change if EVERY staff member treated areas as if they were the ONLY people there.
    Bathrooms would be MUCH cleaner.
Microwaves wouldn't look like a crime scene.
Boots would be stomped and wiped clean and dry before walking around the facility.
Things would be put back exactly as they were found.
And battery charging areas would be a breeze to get in and out of.
Right?!?  Well, maybe things wouldn't be quite THAT blissful.  But if you were following you - you might be less likely to make more work for yourself by doing everything as right as possible in the first place.
So what's the moral of our story?  Do what's right when people are and aren't looking.  Wear your PPE because you want to be safe - not because it's a rule and/or OSHA Guideline.  Take pride in a job well done with everything you do.  You may not be able to change everyone at your facility - but you CAN change what you do.  Act as if you ARE the only one.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Seeing people wearing masks and respirators these days is commonplace. However, long before the Covid Pandemic was upon us - wearing masks and respirators was part of the PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) safety procedures used to combat Oxygen-Deficient Atmospheres and Airborne Contaminants.

The most dangerous elements are invisible, and they can be lurking anywhere you set foot, waiting for you to take a breath. When you temporarily remove and/or forget to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, and/or Steel Toe Boots - you most definitely are putting yourself at risk of everything from injury to death. However, it would be when an accident occurred at the exact time you weren't wearing those items. In reference to masks and respirators - especially in areas with known airborne dangers present, your lack of PPE might cause immediate and potentially long-term damage.

We NEVER condone taking off PPE and/or not following the Safety Guidelines of your facility - but when it comes to Respiratory Protection, we're especially firm in our recommendation to ALWAYS wear it. Just one incident can cause irreparable damage or death - and there's NO excuse for that!

Whether it's an OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Guideline and/or Safety Guideline set forth by your facility - please follow it to the letter!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
If you've ever been to the Eye Doctor - you're probably used to them adjusting the various lenses and asking, "Which is better?  This or that?"  It's this process of elimination that helps them determine what type and strength of prescription you need.
Whether it's you, a Safety Coordinator, Maintenence, and/or Management - it's important to walk your entire facility and make sure everything can be seen as needed and/or required.
This would apply to - but not be limited to:

    • Signs
    • Tape
    • Paint
    • Lights (Indicator, Emergency, etc...)
    • First Aid
    • Fire Extinguishers
    • Defibulators
    • Chemical and Eye Wash Areas
    • Exits
    • Chemical and Toxic Substances Indicators
    • Emergency Instructions
    • Do Not Enter Areas
    • And many more...

And it's not just that they're visible - but also legible.  Sometimes time and/or wear and tear can affect the visibility of items - where they need to be cleaned, painted, and/or replaced altogether.
The placement, angles, and/or height of items can also make a major difference with visibility.  So it might require you to have one or more people stand around an area while you make adjustments.  Where YOU'RE asking, "Which is better?  This or that?"
The point is - safety won't be as effective as possible if you can't see what you're supposed to be doing.

Do you have anyone in your house that constantly checks the expiration date of items?  You'll usually see a sticker or stamp that reads, "Best If Used By" followed by an Expiration Date.
Most of the items in your facility will differ from those you have at home - but, the exercise of making sure everything is up-to-date is just as vital.
If you take the time to make a list of all the things you could and/or should be checking on a regular basis - you might be surprised how many items you jot down.
Here are just a few to get you started (Some with and without actual expiration dates):

    • If applicable, are the batteries in your smoke detectors good?
    • Do all the flashlights at your facility have good batteries?
    • Are all the light bulbs good in your exit and emergency signs?
    • Are all other light bulbs in your facility good?
    • Do your steps and potentially wet areas have all the tread and/or grit needed to avoid slips and falls?
    • Are all your Fire Extinguishers properly charged and inspected?

The list will grow larger and larger the more you brainstorm and/or walk around your facility looking for more items and routines to add.
One thing we can guarantee never goes bad and/or expires is SAFETY!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
WOW!  Today marks a milestone that's not hit by a lot of podcasts.  We've updated our podcast every week for two years straight!  And we have our listeners to thank for it!  Without you - we couldn't continue bringing valuable Warehouse Safety Tips to you and your facilities!
So what does it take to make this consistency possible?  Knowledge and action.
The knowledge is, that we stated we'd deliver a weekly podcast.
The action is, that if we don't, we've let you down and you won't receive information that could potentially keep you safer at your facility.
Our title this week is "The Chain Reaction Of Safety" - and it covers how safety impacts your facility.
The same consistency mentioned above in regards to our podcast applies to your application of safety.
In my personal life, I find myself trying new diets, health routines, and/or exercises.  Many of them come with the same statement of reliability.  It goes something like this.  Whether you follow or don't follow the program - it has very predictable results.  What does that mean?  Simply put, the program is designed for success - but, you have to follow it to the letter for it to work.
One simple example of this from that health world of mine might be sneaking a cookie when nobody is looking.  If you're told not to eat cookies on the program - should you expect it to work after you've snuck a cookie?  No.
The same is true of safety.  You're told to wear PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) whenever and wherever applicable.  If nobody is looking and you decide to take off your Safety Glasses - should you expect your eyes to be kept safe?  No.
Because we like to keep our episodes short and to the point - the chain reaction we cover in the following examples will be very high level but should get our point across.
Here's the chain reaction of safety.
    • You're instructed why and what to do to be safe.
    • You put what you've learned into consistent positive action.
    • Safety Numbers are high and Incident Numbers Are Low.
    • Production Times aren't interrupted.
    • Your facility profits.

There are too many moving parts to cover everything above - but in essence, your "How Many Days Since An Incident" Board should start reaching double and triple digits.
Unfortunately the same is true of not adhering to safety.
    • You're instructed why and what to do to be safe.
    • You neglect what you've learned because you play by your own rules.
    • Safety Numbers are low and Incident Numbers Are high.
    • Production Times are constantly interrupted due to incidents.
    • Your facility loses money.

How do you think your "How Many Days Since An Incident" Board will look by not adhering to safety?  It'll probably never leave sing

It's starting to sound like a broken record - but the truth is, MANY of the topics for this podcast come from a NON-Safety origin.  Our topic today is yet ANOTHER one of those.
Although we don't officially add it to the title - this podcast has been the WEDNESDAY Warehouse Safety Tips or Warehouse Safety Tips Wednesday.  It's not something that follows the rules of staying "Evergreen" (Which is making content that's appears new - regardless of when you listen to it.) - today is Episode 103.  That's right - we're just one more episode away from doing this EVERY week for two years in a row.  And up until this week - we hadn't experienced any hiccups in delivering that.  But yours truly found himself in the Emergency Room and then admitted to the hospital without a podcast ready to go.  Point is - even though we didn't post on Wednesday, we almost didn't post at all this week.
And that brings us to a lesson for this week.  What does your facility do in your absence?
Have you ever been to a business where there's a person that knows EVERYTHING?  They're that person that has been there, done that, and has the t-shirt for virtually everything that's ever happened at the business.  When those sort of people are sick, leave, and/or in the worst-case scenario die - they take ALL their knowledge, tips, and tricks WITH them!  Now you might not be as knowledgeable and/or vital to operations as the before mentioned person is - but if you do anything specialized that most people couldn't just fill in and do, then you're just as essential.
So how do you remedy this?
One of the answers is documenting operations - such as what's accomplished via ISO (Which is the International Organization of Standardization).
Much like The 5S Methodology and Lean Six Sigma - ISO has A LOT of moving parts.  But from the highest of high views - what we're talking about here is making sure you have documentation in place of exactly what you do within your position, explained to the point that theoretically someone could complete your duties in your absence.
And it's not JUST about making sure other people can do your job - but that YOU can do your job as efficiently as possible.  This would apply to things you don't have to do all the time.  If you had step-by-step documentation of a process - it would be much easier to follow than trying to remember how you did it last time and possibly skip needed steps.
As always - implementing The 5S Methodology, specifically SUSTAIN - will allow you to revisit your documentation on a regular basis to assure it's up to date and constantly striving to update it so things are being done as efficiently as possible.
We look forward to seeing you on our 104th Episode / Two-Year Anniversary Podcast next week.
Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE!
