    Safety Outside Of The Box
On today's podcast - we're going to be covering getting creative with safety. So stay tuned.
You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Recently, one of our sponsors - Mighty Line - had some art commissioned for their home office.  We were fortunate to get to interview the artist responsible.  The name of this artist is Christopher Dean.  And the reason we're mentioning him on this podcast is his way of bringing out-of-the-box thinking to Mighty Line's products.
You can find that interview in its entirety by going to:

So what does the artwork have to do with Safety?
As you go about your day-to-day operations at your facility - you're met with a plethora of various safety notifications.  Or at least we HOPE you are!  It actually starts from the moment you get in your car - and your dashboard starts giving you information.  Indicators and alarms for things like gas levels, tire pressure, and seat belts may be totally ignored.  And it may even continue to the trip to work.  Stationary and Digital Signs, cones, and/or people giving instructions may only get a portion of your attention.  And then at work - the Safety Tape and Signs all over your facility may have become almost invisible to you.  We liken it to someone who works at a fertilizer plant that can't smell how bad it is.  You just get so accustomed to your surroundings - that they become part of the landscape.
Now we're not suggesting an art installation that jumps out at your staff - but instead, thinking outside of the box to make safety more noticeable.
Maybe it's putting signs in different areas each week to keep them noticed.
It could be adding colorful warning safety tape to poles instead of paint.
Or simply just having regular pre-shift updates on where different safety precautions are located and the reason why they're there.  And changing what locations you cover each time.
This thinking outside of the box will hopefully keep your staff from becoming blind to the items put in place to keep them safe.
Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
If you've ever been to or worked in a warehouse - you know just how important safety is to both management and staff.  It's almost impossible to go 10 steps without seeing Safety Tape, Angles, Signs, and/or products.
It's these items that show us how to be safe and avoid danger in the workplace.  And if you're looking for the best products to make this happen - look no further than Mighty Line!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
I just received a notification from LinkedIn about a post entitled "Workplace Re-Entry:  When Is It Happening?"
For those individuals considered non-essential, I think restrictions are here to stay for a while.  And if you haven't been released from distanced duties yet - I wouldn't hold your breath.  So my answer to the LinkedIn Post would be, "Not Soon!"  Of course - I'm not in charge of and/or privileged to any information to make accurate predictions on the matter.
In my opinion, a better question would be, "What do you do when you're essential and working from home isn't an option?"  Like it or not - warehouses HAVE to keep working or almost EVERYTHING comes to a stop.
We spoke about this on a recent podcast - but it's worth mentioning again.
Although this is a high-level list of things to do - they're MUSTS for being allowed to keep working in a Distanced Culture.

    • By now, your facility should have measures in place for Social Distancing.  This will include an action plan - and in most cases, signs and/or floor markings reminding you of those plans in reference to where you are at the time.  Knowing and even more importantly, following those plans, signs, and/or floor markings will be half the battle.
    • Wearing appropriate PPE - ESPECIALLY masks and gloves.
    • Following your Kindergarten Rules.  Wash and keep your hands to yourself - and cover your mouth by coughing and/or sneezing into your elbow.
    • Stand apart - generally 6 ft - from fellow staff whenever possible.  And stagger breaks and lunches to limit the number of people together in the same space.
    • If possible - implement one-way traffic flows.
    • Sanitize whenever appropriate.

Most of these things have become second nature - but if we can just continue doing them hopefully, our warehouses will stay on the Essential List!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
If you listen to, watch, and/or read motivational content - you hear people talk about the importance of consistency.
Much like anything in this world - consistency can refer to both positive and negative actions.
When you're taking in the motivational content mentioned above - it's positive.  But if you're talking about consistently doing things that bring you harm - it's negative.
On past podcasts, you've heard me say that I feel one of the worst reasons you can give for doing something is "That's the way we've ALWAYS done it."
Can you imagine if the consistency your staff is employing every day is things affecting your facility in a negative way?
That's why the 5 and 6S Methodology we cover is SO important!
Be sure that your staff is not only consistently doing what's positive for your facility - but that you're consistently looking for ways to improve upon what they're doing.
That's the kind of consistency that tips the scale in your favor!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
The title of our podcast today is, "Stay Close To Distancing".
Yes, we were trying to throw some levity onto a not-so-funny subject - but at the same time, we need to stress the importance of being Social Distancing aware.
For a moment there - some of the Safety Signs and Floor Markings were starting to disappear.  But with the new varients and cold weather approaching - it appears we're going to be in the grips of enhanced Social Distancing once again.Prior to the pandemic - we were doing all sorts of things to remain hygienic and socially distance ourselves.  Now that we've been doing it for almost 2 years, we have a pretty decent handle on what to continue with.
The full list of measures would take far too long to mention - but here are some great places to start.

    • By now, your facility should have measures in place for Social Distancing.  This will include an action plan - and in most cases, signs and/or floor marking reminding you of those plans in reference to where you are at the time.  Knowing and even more importantly following those plans, signs, and/or floor markings will be half the battle.

    • If possible - implement one-way traffic flows.
    • Sanitize whenever appropriate.

Again - these are a just few of the many things we can do to remain hygienic and socially distanced.  By doing just the items mentioned - we'll be well on our way to staying safe.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
Do you feel like The Godfather?  Just when you THOUGHT you were out, we pulled you back in!
Over the last few weeks - we've covered all 5 S's of the 5S Methodology.
We started with the first S - which is SORT.  Sorting, as it pertains to safety, is determining the things that are essential from the things that are not essential.
Next, we covered the second S - which is STRAIGHTEN.  Straightening, as it pertains to safety, is making everything that's essential easily and efficiently accessible.  In addition - it allows for a system of always knowing where those essential items are, who's using them, and where they go when no longer needed.
Then, we were at the halfway mark with the third S - which is SHINE.  Shining, as it pertains to safety, is cleaning at regular and efficient intervals.  And while doing so, inspecting everything around you to assure everything's running properly.
Next, we covered the fourth S -  which is STANDARDIZE.  Standardization, as it pertains to safety, is the organization of the first 3 S's.  It allows you to take sorting, order, and cleaning - and create routines that ensure all three are being implemented in the safest and efficient manner possible.
And we wrapped up with the fifth S, which is SUSTAIN.  Sustaining, as it pertains to safety, is the practice of self-discipline by staff.  Sustaining ensures the first 4 S's of the 5S Methodology is strictly adhered to.  And most important to this, is ensuring staff has a "Do Without Being Told" mentality.
The mentality of the 5S Methodology is a constant and never-ending improvement.  So it's not surprising that even the methodology itself has been improved upon.  Over the last several years, an additional S has been added to the 5S Methodology to make it the 6S Methodology.  That bonus S is a subject you KNOW we love - SAFETY!
All the S's are great - but keeping safety top of mind at ALL times is paramount to keeping yourself and your fellow staff safe.
Remember the "Do Without Being Told" mentality of the fifth S - SUSTAIN?  Safety has to be that way as well.  Examples of this would be things like - removing your PPE, skipping a safety procedure, removing a guard that makes a job difficult to perform, or walking through an area you're not supposed to be in.  You might THINK you're getting over on management and/or getting away with something just because management doesn't see you do it - but, you're only endangering yourself and your fellow staff.  We HAVE to weave safety into every aspect of the 5S Methodology in order for it to be maximized.
And who knows?  By following these S's to the letter (No pun intended) - you might even up developing the 7S Methodology at some point!  But we'll discuss that one when it comes!

Thank you for joining us on this series - and have a SAFE day!

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
It's hard to believe it's been 5 weeks already - but we've almost made it to the end of the 5S Methodology.

And that brings us to this week.  Today - we're covering the fifth S, which is SUSTAIN.  Sustaining, as it pertains to safety, is the practice of self-discipline by staff.  Last week when covering standardization - we stated it was the organization of the first 3 S's.  Sustaining adds yet another component to that organization in the form of ensuring the 5S Methodology is strictly adhered to.  And most important to this, is ensuring staff has a "Do Without Being Told" mentality.
When you follow this and the other 4 S's of the 5S Methodology - you internalize a mentality of constant and never-ending improvement of workplaces - and by association, entire facilities.
You'll notice we didn't say fifth and final S this week.  That's because, over the last several years, the 5S Methodology has actually grown into the 6S Methodology.  So, next week we're going to be talking about what makes that sixth S, which is SAFETY.  So stay tuned!

This week we're moving on to the next S - which is STRAIGHTEN.  Straightening as it pertains to safety, is making everything that's essential easily and efficiently accessible.  In addition - it allows for a system of always knowing where those essential items are, who's using them, and where they go when no longer needed.

Following this step allows you to keep your tools available to those that need them when they need them the most.

If you've ever gone through your house and done any sort of spring cleaning, then you already pretty much know what the first S of the 5S Methodology is - and that's to go through and SORT.
Now that means going through and determining the things that are essential, from the things that are not essential. So it's going to be a keep or get rid of situation.  You're going to go through and you're going to figure out the ways to absolutely streamline everything in your facility to make everything run as great as it possibly can.
So we're going to be going through and looking at the 5S Methodology over the coming weeks.
Keep in mind that going through and doing that sorting process is going to take a lot of the clutter out of your workplace.
    It's going to streamline things.
It's going to allow you to operate at your absolute optimum performance.
Next week what we're going to be talking about is the next step, which is STRAIGHTEN.  That's going to be going through and finding a place for everything that you have deemed as essential.  And we'll make sure that we go through and cover that in detail next week.
