If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
On today's podcast - we're going to be answering the question "What is Six Sigma?".
As with all of our podcasts - we keep things very short and to the point for time purposes.  We provide a general and high-level look at the topics at hand - but, almost all of our topics can and should be looked into much deeper.
Six Sigma was put into action by Motorola Engineer Bill Smith in 1986.  Its purpose was to produce products with little to no defects.  This would be accomplished by identifying and removing as many of the manufacturing and business processes that could be responsible for errors and defects as possible.
Unlike the 5S Methodology, we cover on this podcast - Six Sigma doesn't have 6 parts or steps.  Instead, the six of Six Sigma refers to the 6 standard deviations (Plus and Minus).
The ranking of Six Sigma is similar to that of the colored belts in Martial Arts.  The progression starts with white and is followed by yellow, green, and black.
Six Sigma not only improves quality - but, also offers culture and mindset for facilities to strive for.  When implemented effectively - it should also reduce cost and improve customer satisfaction.

What are the OSHA Color Codes?
A few episodes ago, we discussed "What are the OSHA Color Codes?" (Specifically Yellow and Red).  Once again, if you're not aware of what OSHA is - we covered this a few weeks ago in Episode 115 - " What Does OSHA Stand For?".  It's an acronym that represents the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
As a refresher - the colors we previously covered were yellow for caution and red for danger.
Today we're going to cover two more of the OSHA Color Codes - blue and orange.
If you're a viewer of this podcast, you'll already know this - but, we always like to remind you.  We keep things very short and to the point for time purposes.  We provide a general and high-level look at the topics at hand - but, almost all of our topics can and should be looked into much deeper.  With that said, here are our next two OSHA Color Codes.
Blue isn't quite as recognizable outside of settings where OSHA Guidelines are in place - so we'll cover it first.  In these OSHA-related areas, when you see the color blue it's generally related to indicating where specific areas and items are.  First Aid areas would be a great example of this.
Orange makes its way outside of OSHA Guidelines.  When you see the color orange - it's an indication of a warning.  Think in terms of Hunting Clothing or Construction Signs on the highway.  This color should immediately have you paying attention.
For more information on all of OSHA's Color Codes - visit OSHA.gov and search "Color Codes".

    Keeping safety in mind.
We know Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest.  But if you're like a lot of people - at the very minimum, you probably plan for the week ahead.
The start of every shift is like Sunday.  It's usually a time to stretch and catch up with your co-workers for a few - but, it's a good idea to run down what's going on in your facility as well.  Instead of planning for the week ahead - you're planning for the shift ahead.
We constantly cover how things can become "invisible" to us after being exposed for so long.  So being reminded of important safety issues now and again keeps safety front of mind.
It probably consists of watching out for this or keeping an eye on that - but, those couple of minutes can help you avoid everything from a minor incident to someone being hurt or killed.
So as you can imagine, it's absolutely important to make these Safety Briefings part of your pre-shift rituals.

What are the OSHA Color Codes?
Before answering that, we should probably make sure you know what OSHA is.  We covered this a few weeks ago on Episode 115 - " What Does OSHA Stand For?".  If you missed it or don't know - it's an acronym that represents the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
We try to keep things simple and bite-sized on this podcast - and this one will be no different.  There are several colors among OSHA's Color Codes - but, we're only going to be covering the two that mirror life in and out of your facility.  Those colors are the two colors on a stoplight or most safety signs - yellow and red.  We picked those two because they're pretty universal in what they mean no matter where you go.
When you see the color yellow - it means you should be cautious of your surroundings or preparing to stop.
The color red means stop, do not enter or indicates danger.
In the workplace - these colors can sometimes fade into the background, and become almost invisible to us.  It's of the utmost importance that we go about every moment of our day looking for these two colors in particular, as they're the two that can impact us and our co-workers the most.  Not paying attention to them can result in anything from a harmless incident to death.
For more information on all of OSHA's Color Codes - visit OSHA.gov and search "Color Codes".

    What is a Gantt Chart?

Simply stated, it's a bar graph that allows project managers (As well as other staff members) to see a project from a specific start time to its projected finish.  Those utilizing it can manage workflows and improve upon them for the future.

Created by Henry L. Gantt - the Gantt Chart allows a visual representation of a project.
Originally created to track the construction of ships - it's been used on everything from the Interstate Highway System to the construction of the Hoover Dam.
Tools like the Gantt Chart allow us to constantly work towards improved efficiency.  That's Lean Manufacturing.  We'll discuss that more in upcoming episodes.
Yes, we usually share SAFETY Tips - but, keep this in mind.  One of the benefits of a safe facility is continued production.  If you're following the 5S Methodology - then you're focused on improvement.  In order to have improvement - you really need to seek out greater efficiency.  And that's where the Gantt Chart brings everything full circle.  You can monitor the progress of everything - including safety procedures within one or all projects - at a glance.
Any tool that improves safety, productivity, and efficiency has our vote!

    What is PPE?
After being part of a global pandemic with Covid - it's highly unlikely that you're unaware of what PPE is.  But if you were unaware that wearing a mask and/or gloves is considered PPE - then the following will be for you.
PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment.

As with all topics we cover here on the podcast - this will be a very high-level look at PPE.  There are many other PPE options available besides the ones we'll cover here.  To keep things short and to the point - here are the primary ones you need to be aware of.

    • Eyes | Glasses
    • Ears | Ear Plugs and Ear Muffs
    • Lungs | Masks and Respirators
    • Head | Hard Hats
    • Hands | Gloves
    • Feet | Steel Toed Boots
    • Back | Braces
    • Body | Braces, Harnesses, and Protective Clothing

The two most important PPE sources you need to follow are the OSHA Guidelines required at your facility - as well as the training and guidelines set forth by management.
Remember - your health and safety is your boss when it comes to PPE.  If you think you're getting away with something by not wearing it - you're only fooling yourself.  It only takes a moment of not wearing PPE to introduce issues, injuries, and in the worst cases - death.  Don't roll the dice when it comes to your health and safety.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast!
    What does AED stand for?

AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator.
Of the many safety drills and routines, you'll encounter at your facility - assisting someone experiencing Cardiac Arrest won't likely happen a lot, if at all. That's why it's crucial to cover how to operate an AED regularly and correctly.
As with most topics we cover - we'll keep this very high-level. All situations are different, and AEDs can vary by model - but the following will give you an example of how to proceed with this event. In an actual event - please follow the guidelines and instructions of your facility and AED Unit.
If you experience someone that appears to be in Cardiac Arrest -
    • First and foremost, call for help!
    • Have someone with CPR Training attend to the victim while retrieving an AED.
    • Once you have the AED - turn the power on and follow the written and verbal instructions.
    • Your first step should be to attach AED Pads to the victim's dry chest. Spacing will usually include one pad beneath the right collarbone and the other beneath the left armpit.
    • Be sure that nobody is touching the victim and verbally state, "Everyone, Stay Clear!"
    • The AED should then evaluate if the victim requires you to apply a shock.
      • If the shock does need to be applied - you'll once again verbally state, "Everyone, Stay Clear!". Then you'll shock the victim and await further instructions from the AED.
      • If a shock doesn't need to be applied - resume CPR until help arrives.

Now you know what AED stands for - and a general idea of how to use one in an emergency.

What do the letters "OSHA" stand for?

OSHA is an acronym, and it represents the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

OSHA was established in 1970 signing into existence by President Richard Nixon. This act created an oversight group that would help set employers' standards to reduce job-related injuries, illnesses, and accidents. It also gave employees and their representatives tools to help prevent these tragedies from happening in the workplace.

Employers are required to adhere to the standards provided by OSHA and, in turn, provide a safe workplace free from serious hazards. Employers are responsible for training employees and performing tests, providing PPE, medical tests as mandated by means, posting OSHA citations annually, and not retaliating or discriminating against an employee.

Not adhering to OSHA Standards and Requirements can result in injuries, fines, and even death. Make sure your facilities are operating within and above the OSHA Standards and Requirements at all times.

You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com.

Many of the subjects we cover can be complex. Our objective with this podcast is to convert that complexity into quick, on-the-go information and tips.

On our podcast today - we're going to give a high-level look at ISO.

ISO stands for the International Organization for Standardization.

Conformity is the buzzword of the ISO concept.  Committing to it means your facility and staff will be establishing a systematic mindset and taking action to ensure all aspects of business are clear, decided on, and produced.  Once a facility has been ISO Certified - its customers should be able to expect standards that meet and exceed expectations.
Imagine going to your favorite fast-food restaurant and getting food, drinks, packaging, and presentation that looked, tasted, and smelled different every time you visited.  Chances are it wouldn't remain your favorite and/or frequented place for long.
Conformity is the key.  And it's not just conformity to quality.  It can - and should - bleed over into everything within your facility and overall company culture.

If a facility is following The 5S Methodology - the 5th S (Sustain) focuses on maintaining the other 4 S's (Sort, Straighten, Shine, and Standardize) and striving to improve upon them every day.  The Japanese word “Kaizen” comes from the words “Kai” (Which means change) and “Zen” (Which means to make good/better). Put them together – and you have the principle of constant improvement and/or a change for the better.
Doing so can only make things better - and if that also applies to safety, then we're 100% onboard with it.

I've said this so many times that it's becoming a broken record - but it's true nonetheless.  Many of our podcasts are situations that happen directly to me.  And our podcast today is one of 'em.
Yesterday, my family and I went out for coffee together.  We enjoyed several cups of coffee with one another - and before leaving, I grabbed myself a To-Go Cup to enjoy while working.  As I was getting ready to get in the car - I felt a searing pain in my hand.  The bottom of my To-Go Cup released just enough to create a stream of scalding hot coffee to come out.  Unfortunately, it was large - so the stream just kept pouring through my fingers.
My wife grabbed the cup and took it back into the coffee shop to explain what had just occurred - and the girl behind the counter said, "Oh!  That's the second time that's happened!"
    WHAT?!?
I'm not litigious - but that's NOT the answer you want to be on record as saying after an incident, nor is it the response you should get and/or want to hear.
So how does this ridiculous situation apply to YOUR facility?
We always say, "If you see something, say something."  But what we should change it to is, "If you see something, DO something!"
Could you imagine an OSHA Representative being told, "Oh!  People get hurt in that area all the time."  Spoiler Alert - you're not going to like their response!
If you know something is an issue - take immediate action to fix it.  Don't let another person risk getting injured.  It's not worth it!
We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips.
Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE!
