While cruising near the border of Cardassian space, the crew of the Tahoma are hailed by the local Gul. She tells them that the Empire has picked up a distress signal coming from a nearby Cardassian science station and they don't have any patrol ships in the area- would the Federation do them a solid and check it out?
Agent Kennet "takes control" of the situation. The Romulans threaten retaliation. No-one's happy with the Federation. The crew struggles to find a solution.
Research continues into the mysterious illness. The Ferengi name their price. Negotiations get tense when a former enemy starts their own investigation. Agent Kennet spills the beans, Ensign Rardess loses patience, and Lt. Elliot gets passionate.
The crew is asked to respond to a mysterious medical emergency at a remote colony. A tight-lipped representative is sent from Federation HQ to accompany them.
