Although some expected Elijah to return literally, John the Baptist was not Elijah himself but fulfilled the same prophetic role and calling. Just as Elijah called Israel to turn back to God and confronted corrupt leadership, John preached repentance, challenged sin, and prepared people for the coming of Jesus. The prophecies in Malachi were fulfilled through John's ministry, as he came in the spirit and power of Elijah, turning hearts back to God and restoring relationships.
