There is familiarity in Luke’s account of The Birth of John Foretold, as if this is a story we may have heard before. A couple, well past childbearing age, and living in a culture where childless women were mocked, is promised a son. Not only does this story echo Abraham’s and Sarah’s, the childlessness of Rachel before she bore twin boys, and the prayerful Hannah who bore Samuel, Zacharias’ and Elizabeth’s story also prepares the way for the next and greatest conception story for another devout and ordinary couple.
As we continue our series The Coming King, the Exodus era shows us that God is constantly at work providing for His people and giving them all that they need. However, Israel’s discontentment robs them of the joy of God’s faithful provision for them. As we look at a story involving a plague of snakes we see that we too are like Israel; A people in need of Salvation, a people who can to quickly become discontent in God’s provision, and a people that must cling to the promise that we are not yet home.
