Luke 12:1-3. Have you ever met someone who was one thing in how they presented themselves to others on the outside and quite another behind closed doors? Me too! Something shameful, difficult, or unjust happens to them and a rage monster, who normally remains hidden in the dark, comes out for a momentary walk in the light. Then you find yourself unsure as to who that individual really is. I think in many ways we all have these experiences with others. Now if we are, to be honest, on a really bad day, many of us do it ourselves too. Is this hypocrisy? Maybe? Sometimes we and other people are just having a rough go of it and all their unexpressed feelings are coming out all at once. So, give people a chance to learn from their mistakes and hurt before putting a label on them. But when someone claims to have moral standards or beliefs to which their own behavior does not conform they are actually living in hypocrisy. Unfortunately, we all can become lured into this sin. Yes, it is a sin, Jesus says as much. As you and I are influenced by the world's cultural and social norms, people around us seek to hold up the ungodly expectation of acceptance sin that we might “just get along” or the pious religious leader seeks to move us from the wonderful grace of God to works-based righteousness – do and say all the right things – we can quickly start down the slippery slope of Hypocrisy and drag our community down with us.
