President Joe Biden's lawyers have found more classified documents at his residence in Wilmington, Delaware, deepening the crisis ahead of the expected launch of his 2024 reelection campaign.

Aides to President Joe Biden have discovered at least one additional batch of classified documents in a location separate from the Washington office he used after leaving the Obama administration, according to a person familiar with the matter. Since November, after the discovery of documents with classified markings in his former office, Biden aides have been searching for any additional classified materials that might be in other locations he used, said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide details about the ongoing inquiry.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has assigned the U.S. attorney in Chicago to review documents marked classified that were found at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, two sources with knowledge of the inquiry told CBS News. The roughly 10 documents are from President Biden's vice-presidential office at the center, the sources said. CBS News has learned the FBI is also involved in the U.S. attorney's inquiry.

The White House is REPORTEDLY working with the Justice Department as it reviews classified documents from when President Biden served as vice president that were found in a private office last fall. Attorneys for Biden discovered the documents in November and notified the National Archives, Richard Sauber, special counsel to Biden, said in a statement. The Archives took possession of the materials the following morning and has since referred the matter to the Justice Department for further investigation.

After five days of chaos and 15 rounds of floor votes, newly elected Republican House speaker Kevin McCarthy is set to face an instant challenge on Monday as the House votes on a new rules package. A handful of establishment Republicans indicated on Sunday they may withhold their support for the rules unless more details of concessions made to ultraconservative lawmakers during a week of torrid negotiations are unveiled.

Politics are supposed to take place in Congress. Representatives from various regions and with various interests are intended to work together to develop legislative solutions from the ground up. Legislation should be enacted at the culmination of a process of discovery, in committees empowered to evaluate expert and constituency debates. This procedure fosters agreement. It allows the people to hear and be heard from opposing viewpoints. All of this is reversed in the Pelosi model. Legislative priorities, including massive undebated omnibus budget measures, are almost totally hammered out by the speaker and Senate majority leader and then delivered to legislators as unchangeable stone tablets. And, because Congress' dysfunction contributes to hyper-partisanship, legislators are expected to vote along party lines.

Republican leader Kevin McCarthy failed in marathon voting Tuesday to become House speaker, a historic defeat with no clear way out as House Republicans dug in for a long, messy start for the new Congress. Needing 218 votes in the full House, McCarthy got just 203 in two rounds — less even than Democrat Hakeem Jeffries in the GOP-controlled chamber. A third ballot quickly commenced as night fell on the new House GOP majority, tensions rising as all other business came to a halt. Then, various media outlets said, he also lost Round 3. Having lost 19 GOP votes in the first two rounds, this time he lost 20, putting the top spot even further out of reach. (He could afford to lose only 5.) At least one earlier supporter, Rep. Byron Donalds, had reportedly switched to support for Rep. Jim Jordan.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is so confident that he will be the next Speaker of the House that he is already moving his belongings into the Speaker's suite, according to a report. Newsmax congressional correspondent Logan Ratick broke the news to host Bob Sellers on Monday. "We do know that Kevin McCarthy is moving all of his belongings into the Speaker's suite, but if he loses and is not eventually the Speaker of the House, he'll have to move all of that stuff out," Ratnick reported from the House. "That would be embarrassing," Sellers noted.

The January 6 special committee on Wednesday decided to withdraw its subpoena of former President Trump as it concludes its work. Trump's testimony was no longer needed, according to the panel's chairman, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS). Thompson noted in a letter to Trump's attorneys: "In light of the imminent end of our investigation, the Select Committee can no longer pursue the specific information covered by the subpoena." He added, "Therefore, through this letter, I hereby formally withdraw the subpoena issued to former President Trump, and notify you that he is no longer obligated to comply or produce records in response to said subpoena."
