But Jesus’ strength was His reliance on the Father’s strength. What He commands us to do He can give us the strength to do. When you feel you can’t go on, ask first if you are doing God’s will, then ask if you are depending on your own strength or on His.

Humble, broken, and contrite believer, you are rich in Jesus, you are clothed in His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21), you are liberated from captivity to sin (John 8:36). Realize the blessings you have in Him and be thankful. Continue to realize our desperate need to grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior. Rejection by the world can be disappointing, but Jesus tells us to rejoice and be exceeding glad, for so persecuted they the prophets who were before you (Matthew 5:12).

We make the same mistake in thinking God is like us, that He wants physical things or actions when what He desires is our hearts. We think God will just overlook sin, because that is what we in our weakness tend to do. But God is holy. We must understand God from Scripture and never think He is like us (Psalm 50:21). We are made in His image, but that doesn't mean we should think of Him in our fallen image.

Jesus came into the world, born of a woman, to defeat sin and death. He came to defeat the rulers and authorities, the principalities and powers that rule this present age. This Christmas story, this Merry Christmas that we refer to, the birth of Christ, is the most significant event in human history. God becomes a man, Immanuel, God with us (Matt. 1:23). This Christ child, the son of God, the creator of the universe (Col.1:16) would humble himself and arrive on the scene to be born of a woman, to walk among us. This time of year is the time of year to remind us.

Do you know that you can be free from the Law of Sin and Death? Stop trying to be righteous—you literally cannot be "good enough"—and accept Jesus' righteous, cleansing blood.

Going in and out of the water doesn’t save you, but it does make a declaration to the world that you are serious about following Jesus. If you have never been immersed in baptism, it would be a great way to start the coming year. Let me know if you would like to make that declaration. And for those who have been baptized, I would ask if you are living out that declaration you made then, or has the whale swallowed you? The beloved is coming to rescue you, take you in His arms, and give you a fresh start.
