Minnesota State Moorhead had its first fall football practice Monday, Aug. 8, at Scheels Field at Alex Nemzek Stadium.

The Dragons posted a 5-6 record overall and in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference last fall.

MSUM sophomore quarterback Tommy Falk, from Jamestown, N.D., returns as the starter. Falk completed 252 of 413 passes for 2,874 yards and 20 touchdowns with 10 interceptions last season. The Dragons also return their top rusher in sophomore Luke Imdieke, who rushed for 299 yards and a touchdown on 78 attempts a season ago. Junior receiver Ryan Bieberdorf was second on the team in receiving last fall with 59 catches for 696 yards and seven touchdowns.

After being cancelled last year due to COVID-19, the IIHF World Juniors are back.

Representing Team USA for the third straight year is UND defenseman Tyler Kleven.

The Fargo native will play in the under 20 tournament that runs from Aug. 9 to Aug. 20 in Edmonton. Kleven will be working for his second straight gold medal with the team.

High school football in North Dakota began today as teams around the state held it's first practice of the season. The Horace Hawks are looking back, as they look ahead to their first season in 11A.

"This is really where the work starts to begin," said Horace head coach Harvey McMahon.

Two years ago Horace football was just getting started.

Today, 12 of the original 14 players took the field for the Hawk's first varsity practice.

It was a cool celebration on a hot day when the Fargo 12U All-Stars gave their coach an icewater shower after they won the state championship. It also booked their spot in the MidWest Regional.

"You didn't feel like it was real until after it. Then you're like, 'oh we're going to Indianapolis,'" said little leaguer Cormac Nagle.

Now, a new challenge in front of them. Coaches and parents have to get the team to Indiana with a chance to make the Little League World Series.

Moorhead Spuds rising senior Austin Schultz said he received an offer from North Dakota State head football coach Matt Entz on Monday morning and it didn't take Schultz long to make his decision.

"I committed on the spot," Schultz said.

Schultz verbally committed to NDSU and its the 18th known commitment for the 2023 recruiting class . The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Schultz had multiple NCAA Division I offers, including South Dakota State and St. Thomas.

Anthony Renz's fifth season with the RedHawks is a dream filled with mixed emotions. The 29-year-old is serving as bench coach, but also partial manager.

"It's been bittersweet. It's easier to just kind of think about decisions, but when you're managing a game and you're making those decisions, there's a sort of pressure that kind of comes with it," said Renz.

Renz grew up as a passionate New York Mets fan, which makes it even more ironic that two decades later he's calling the shots alongside his former bigger rival from the Philadelphia Phillies.

It may as well be considered March madness in July for the Jamestown Eagles.

On Tuesday, the seventh-seeded Eagles shocked the No. 2 seed Bismarck Governors in the opening round of the North Dakota American Legion baseball AA state tournament. Then, they upset the host No. 3 seed West Fargo Patriots Wednesday. And Thursday, No. 1 seed Fargo Post 2 was the next to fall victim.

Jamestown topped Post 2 11-8 in an offensive battle at West Fargo's Young Field, gaining the lead in the third inning and never looking back.

"This is something that I want to do, and something that I gotta do now," said Tyson Gordon.

Two years ago, Tyson Gordon arrived to play safety at NDSU.

"Coming out of high school, the NDSU offer is something that I really couldn't turn down," said Gordon.

But the Omaha native had a second love--basketball.

As the engines roar through the evening each Monday night, Lincoln Korynta can only think one thing.

"I like racing," he exclaims.

It's easy to see why the seven-year-old novice driver, along with his five-year-old brother River, look forward to raceday for six nights a week.

The sport runs in their family, starting with their grandfather, Scott Zwetzig.

"I raced in the 80s, early 90s," he said. "Raced through Lisbon, Grand Forks. I had my wife race one year before we got married."
