Joe and Gus Hurlburt have been playing basketball together for as long as they can remember.

The brothers have spent the last six seasons playing together at Enderlin High School, combining for 11 All-Region and All-State honors over the years.

Now, they'll have two final games together before heading their separate ways when seniors from Class B square off against those from Class A in the North Dakota Lions All-Star Basketball Games on Monday, July 11 in Bismarck and Tuesday, July 12 in Fargo.

North Dakota State has found its quarterback recruit for the Class of 2023. And they found it in one of the most unlikely places the Bison have ever recruited.

Jamestown (NY)'s Trey Drake announced his commitment to NDSU on Twitter Sunday afternoon.

"Ultimately for me it was the coaching staff, they blew me out of the water. The tradition of pride and excellence is insane. I've been following NDSU football for a while, I knew it was a place I wanted to be." Drake said.

It's the weekend of the NHL Draft and several teenagers across the country lives are about to change. For Fargo native and future UND forward, Ben Strinden, it's his final shot at getting his name called.

"I never expected to be talking to NHL teams," said Ben Strinden.

It all started when he was lacing up the skates for Fargo South-Shanley. Now Ben Strinden is prepping for his third and final NHL draft.

Fargo-Moorhead this season has found a way to score late to win ball games. That was not the case Wednesday as four Winnipeg relievers shut down the RedHawks offense down the stretch and the Goldeyes came away with a 5-3 win before 2,732 at Newman Outdoor Field.

Winnipeg starter Alex Manasa went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. The Goldeyes turned the game over to four relievers — winner Bryan Blanton, Travis Seabrooke, Erasmo Pinales and Tasker Strobel — who all pitched an inning and limited the RedHawks to one hit. Strobel pitched the ninth for the save.

After coming to an unexpected pause last week, the Red River Pilots season will not restart as the Expedition League is wrapping up its season early. The summer collegiate wood-bat league will play its championship series this week, which is nearly a month earlier than expected.

This news comes less than a week after Red River Pilots players and its head coach Matty Holem left Grand Forks midseason, citing player concerns and poor management. Since then a second team, North Iowa, ended its season early as well.

North Dakota State landed Lemont (Ill.) High School's Noah Taylor, a defensive prospect with position versatility.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Taylor verbally committed to NDSU for football Monday, July 4, and projects to play either safety or linebacker for the Bison, he said.

NDSU offered Taylor a couple days ago after he attended a three-day camp in Fargo.

"I absolutely loved it there," Taylor said. "I was able to stay on campus so I experienced all of it. All the coaches were very cool with me. … I'm excited to be a Bison and join the community."

For the third straight year, local legion baseball teams came together to play the game they love in honor of Jim Pettersen, Fargo Post 2's longtime chairman who passed away in 2020 from COVID-19.

Fargo Post 400, West Fargo, and Moorhead swept their doubleheaders while Fargo Post 2 split a pair of games against Manitoba to open the tournament.

We're in the heart of college recruiting season as commits keep rolling in for North Dakota State and the University of North Dakota.

As you see the list of offers coming in for these newly minted college players, there was one player hanging out there until about 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon that could have put NDSU at another level.

Pierre, South Dakota native Lincoln Kienholz is a three-star ranked quarterback who has blown up the recruiting world over the last two months. Kienholz has offers from over 20 schools, NDSU being one of them.

Another local high school weightlifter is bringing home some national championship hardware.

Sheyenne junior Nic Renner won a title in the 96 kilogram weight class at the USA Weightlifting National Championships on Monday night. His final results, lifting a combined 566 pounds in the snatch and clean and jerk, beat the runner-up by 63 pounds.

Sonny Gray let himself feel the full range of emotions on Monday. He let those emotions fuel him and then funneled them into one of his best starts of the season. And afterwards, he had a long embrace in the first base dugout with pitching coach Wes Johnson, a man whom he has become close to over the course of the past few months.

A day after news broke that Johnson would be leaving to take the pitching coach job at Louisiana State University, Gray went out and pitched the Twins to an 11-1 win with seven scoreless innings against the Guardians at Progressive Field on Monday night.
