  • S5 Ep169: Oscar Rewind: Django Unchained
This isn’t the first time we’ve talked about Quentin Tarantino on this podcast and unfortunately it won’t be the last. Django reunites Christoph Waltz with Tarantino and with the Supporting Actor win. One thing we can’t deny about this film is that this cast is stacked. Everyone is giving a great performance, except for Tarantino himself at the end. The accent he chose still haunts us to this day. Visually we enjoyed this movie, but we’re not fans of listening to derogatory speech or seeing hate crimes being committed on the black community, historically accurate or not.

  • S5 Ep168: Oscar Rewind: Beasts of the Southern Wild
Beasts of the Southern Wild is a breathtaking film. Quvenzhane Wallis takes us on a journey that not many adult actors could do well. She carries herself simultaneously as the small child she is and the young woman she learning to be. We all just want to feel cohesive. Dwight Henry, the actor who played Hush Puppy’s father was another stand out. Listen to us rave about his performance and how we wish his name was amongst those in the supporting actor category.

  • S5 Ep167: Oscar Rewind: Amour
We're back and talking about movies once again so all is right in the world. Take a deep breath, relax and get ready to be transported back to 2013. First up is Amour! A quiet emotional gut punch of a film that almost felt more like a play. At the time of its nomination, it was only the seventh foreign film to be nominated for Best Picture.

What did you think of Amour? What's your favorite Foreign Best Picture nominee? Let us know over on Twitter or Instagram!

  • S5 Ep166: Conversations with Oscar: The Ceremony
It's the night (next morning..) of the show! The Roomies are back together in one room watching the ceremony live and giving you all of our thoughts....and like usual, we have plenty! This was a wild night full of shocking moments, unnecessary moments and forty-five extra minuets.

  • S5 Ep165: Conversations with Oscar: West Side Story
The original 1961 West Side Story is a beloved classic. So why remake an already great movie? We all asked the same question, but some up and coming director named Steven Spielberg said he could do it and boy did he deliver. This vibrant remake took the bones of the original and made it something better.

  • S5 Ep164: Conversations With Oscar: The Power of the Dog
While we over here at We Have Thoughts love us some gay cowboys, this particular western left us wanting something more. The Power of the Dog is a fine movie, and it's just that fine. Fine performances, fine cinematography, fine direction, fine script, fine. Maybe we're the crazy ones for wanting the movie with the most nominations to be a tad better than fine.

  • S5 Ep163: Conversations With Oscar: Nightmare Alley
Guillermo del Torro tells stories about the horrors of man and the setting for his noir film lends itself perfectly. Nightmare Alley is rich with texture and vibrant with color, beautiful people and beautiful costumes. While we had some issues with some things overall it was a good watch.

  • S5 Ep162: Conversations With Oscar: Licorice Pizza
In this, the year of our lord 2021, Paul Thomas Anderson thought it was appropriate to release a film featuring an illegal age gap romance, and blatant racism. We're still trying to make it make sense. Unfortunately, these overshadow anything we actually liked in this film. PTA, you have some explaining to do.

  • S5 Ep161: Conversations With Oscar: King Richard
This conversation was surprising to all of us in one way or another. We did not have the same experience watching this film and that is why we love talking about these nominations the most! This sport movie or bio pic focusing on the father of tennis super stars Venus and Serena Williams sat differently for each of us. It is a film that brings out our own personal histories and made the conversation (both recorded and not) interesting.

Tell us what you thought of King Richard and Will Smith's performance? Tell us about your love for Aunjanue Ellis!

  • S5 Ep160: Conversations With Oscar: Drive My Car
Drive My Car is the only international/foreign language film to be nominated for Best Picture this year and for a good reason. Hamaguchi's three-hour long film is a steady and consistently paced story about grief and trauma and the toll it can take. We love when a filmmaker lets the setting, and the actors do the work with simple wide shots and intimate close ups.
