No specific guests this episode, but we have several of the WeatherBrains gang at the AMS 98th conference being held in Austin, TX. We had hopes of having some of them join in the discussion, but the massive meeting seems to have put an obstacle in the plans.
This is one of the most anticipated shows for the WeatherBrains gang as we have Greg Carbin, now at WPC, with his annual year end review of his top 10 weather events for 2017. These are the biggest events in the US based solely on Greg's personal observations and do not represent any official government list. The titles of each of the top 10 events are listed at the bottom of this page.
Our guest WeatherBrain for this episode is Dr. Pam Heinselmann. Dr. Heinselman's primary research objective is to determine how to best capitalize on phased array radar capabilities to address 21st century forecast and warning needs including the NOAA Weather and Water strategic mission goal to increase lead time and accuracy for weather and water warnings and forecasts. She is accomplishing this objective through a combination of innovative scanning strategy design, leadership of data collection and analysis activities, active involvement with end users, and graduate student mentorship. Working with radar data has been Dr. Heinselman’s passion, as indicated by her earlier teamwork that was recognized by a NOAA Bronze Medal in 1998 and Silver Medal in 1999 for improvements to NEXRAD algorithms.
