  • Can Democracy Work?: A Short History of a Radical Idea
James Miller is a professor of politics and liberal studies at the New School for Social Research. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Examined Lives: From Socrates to Nietzsche; The Passion of Michel Foucault; Flowers in the Dustbin: The Rise of Rock and Roll, 1947-1977; and Democracy Is in the Streets: From Port Huron to the Siege of Chicago. He is the author of Can Democracy Work?: A Short History of a Radical Idea, from Ancient Athens to Our World (Farrar, Straus and Giroux). Today, democracy is the world’s only broadly accepted political system, and yet it has become synonymous with disappointment and crisis. How did it come to this? In Can Democracy Work?James Miller offers a lively, surprising, and urgent history of the democratic idea from its first stirrings to the present. As he shows, democracy has always been rife with inner tensions. • Google Employees walk over Google’s treatment of sexual harassment suits
Long gone are the times of monthly Google PageRank updates, Google dances, and checking Google data centers - and to be honest, I somewhat miss those days. But the question I see asked a lot is how much have things changed? The answer is a lot has changed but fundamentally nothing has changed. Several people have recently reported seeing double featured snippets in Google search results. A double featured snippet is a featured snippet with a second featured snippet beneath it. This arrangement effectively shows information from two websites and advertising in the space normally showing ten websites. Growing up in India, there was one good library in my town that I had access to—run by the British Council.  It was modest by western standards, and I had to take two buses just to get there. But I was lucky, because for every child like me, there were many more who didn’t have access to the same information that I did. Access to information changed my life, bringing me to the U.S. to study computer science and opening up huge possibilities for me that would not have been available without the education I had.

A clear-eyed account of the realities of life in America’s overlooked heartland, The View from Flyover Country is a piercing critique of the labor exploitation, race relations, gentrification, media bias, and other aspects of the post-employment economy that gave rise to a president who rules like an autocrat. The View from Flyover Country is necessary reading for anyone who believes that the only way for America to fix its problems is to first discuss them with honesty and compassion.

  • The Enterprise Cloud Space
Today on Entrepreneur Effect we are joined by Matt Holleran, General Partner at Cloud Apps Capital Partners. Most seed rounds these days are about $2 million, but if you’re a startup, especially in the enterprise cloud space, what can you accomplish with that amount? Not much. If you're attempting to solve weighty problems for business, the product offering requires the help of experienced, high-quality engineers who don’t come cheap. Add to that marketing and sales needs, and the costs add up fast. On the flipside, CEOs and senior executives from enterprise cloud companies that have had successful exits are constantly approached by startups requesting angel/seed money. These CEOs don’t always know how best to respond to the opportunities presented to them.  It may be flattering, and the promise of a return on your investment can be enticing, but is it worth it? Cloud Apps Capital Partners is a leading venture capital firm in the cloud business application market at the Classic Series A stage.  Matt Holleran has 12 years of operating experience in successful business application companies including Salesforce.com, 12 years of venture capital and private equity experience, and a highly relevant network. He has walked in the shoes of founding teams at each stage of a business application company’s development — no customers, initial traction, scaling the team, market leadership, and global expansion. Matt has a BA in engineering and economics from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
