Vice President Kamala Harris is out with a string of new economic proposals focused on food prices, taxes, housing and medical costs that she says will empower the middle class.

The plans constitute the first major policy proposals that Harris has released in the nearly four weeks since President Joe Biden bowed out of the race and endorsed his vice president.

After years of polling showing that Americans are worried about inflation, Harris is aiming to contain prices where they have often been most conspicuously felt — at the grocery store. She's promising to, during her first 100 days in office, send Congress proposed federal limits on price increases for food producers and grocers. Harris also is seeking new authority for the Federal Trade Commission and attorneys general in states across the country to enact steeper punishments for violators. She also wants to use government regulators to crack down on mergers and acquisitions among large food industry businesses that the vice president argues have contributed to higher prices.

The U.S. Secret Service is making arrangements for former President Donald Trump to resume outdoor campaign rallies by surrounding his podium with bulletproof glass, multiple sources told ABC News.

The measure is typically used exclusively for sitting presidents, but the Secret Service is making an exception following the first attempted assassination of a presidential candidate since George Wallace in 1972.

The Secret Service declined to comment on its use of ballistic glass.

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said the campaign does not comment on security measures relating to Trump.

A white woman with a history of harassing children and using racial slurs was convicted of manslaughter on Friday in the fatal shooting of a Black neighbor last year in Ocala, Florida.

Susan Louise Lorincz, 60, killed Ajike “AJ” Owens with a single shot from a .380-caliber handgun as Owens knocked on her apartment door on June 2, 2023.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said at the time Lorincz and Owens were in a long-standing “feud” over Owens’ children playing.

The all-white, six-person jury found Lorincz guilty of manslaughter despite the 60-year-old asserting that her actions were in self-defense. Lorincz, who showed no emotion, faces up to 30 years in prison.

Locked in a tight race for the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are eager to show voters how they’ll handle the economy if elected.

Both campaigns have a populist bent, but the candidates have differing visions for helping Americans contending with the high living expenses that remain even as the recent spike in inflation has largely passed.

Harris spoke Friday afternoon about the economic proposals she’s rolled out this week, including enhanced tax credits for kids, housing assistance and efforts to stop price gouging. She described her forward-looking agenda as “an opportunity economy,” where Americans are given a real chance to succeed, while saying Trump is only focused on helping the wealthy and big businesses.

Trump held two speeches this week centered on the economy and his policies, but he has yet to release a detailed economic plan. He has repeatedly slammed the Biden-Harris administration for high inflation and has pledged to bring down prices immediately. And he accuses Harris of wanting to institute “communist price controls.”

In reality, a president has few tools to address rising prices unilaterally. It’s the job of the Federal Reserve to set interest rates.

Also, most of their major proposals would require congressional approval – and the candidates have not specified how they’d pay for their costly wish list at a time when the federal debt is swiftly rising, though Harris said she would ask well-off Americans and corporations to pay more.

Here’s what we know so far about Harris’ and Trump’s economic plans:

Trump is calling for more tariffs if he returns to the White House. While Harris has not talked about her trade plans specifically, the Biden-Harris administration kept a lot of Trump-era tariffs in place and has increased some of those duties.

During speeches and interviews conducted earlier this spring, Trump called for adding a tariff of at least 10% on all imports from all countries, as well as another tariff upward of 60% on all Chinese imports.

Together, those tariffs could cost a typical middle-income household $1,700 a year, according to an estimate published by the Peterson Institute for International Economics in May.

This week, Trump suggested that the across-the-board tariff could be as high as 20%.

“We’re going to have 10 to 20% tariffs on foreign countries that have been ripping us off for years,” he said during a speech in North Carolina on Wednesday.

Disney is trying to have a widower's wrongful death lawsuit dismissed and sent to arbitration because the man had signed up for a Disney+ account several years ago.

Jeffrey J. Piccolo sued Disney Parks and Resorts in February, months after his wife, Dr. Kanokporn Tangsuan, died after she consumed food containing allergens at a restaurant in Disney World.

Piccolo said in his complaint that he, his wife and his mother went to dinner at Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant at the resort in Orlando, Florida, on Oct. 5. They asked several times whether Tangsuan's allergies could be accommodated, according to the complaint. Despite the server’s having assured them, Tangsuan had a severe allergic reaction and died at a local hospital, the complaint said.
Disney filed court documents in May saying the $50,000 lawsuit should be dismissed and resolved by individual arbitration because of terms Piccolo agreed to when he signed up for a free trial of the streaming service Disney+. The filing also says he accepted the same terms when he used the Walt Disney Parks website to buy tickets.

Lawyers for the company said that users have to select checkboxes that hyperlink to the terms of use, as well as another that says they agreed to the terms. Users cannot select "Agree & Continue" if the boxes are not checked, the filing says.
