A white woman with a history of harassing children and using racial slurs was convicted of manslaughter on Friday in the fatal shooting of a Black neighbor last year in Ocala, Florida.
Susan Louise Lorincz, 60, killed Ajike “AJ” Owens with a single shot from a .380-caliber handgun as Owens knocked on her apartment door on June 2, 2023.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said at the time Lorincz and Owens were in a long-standing “feud” over Owens’ children playing.
The all-white, six-person jury found Lorincz guilty of manslaughter despite the 60-year-old asserting that her actions were in self-defense. Lorincz, who showed no emotion, faces up to 30 years in prison.
Pamela Dias, Owens’ mother, cried during the trial. A family member yelled out, “Oh, God. Thank you, Jesus,” after Lorincz was convicted and taken into custody.

The U.S. Secret Service is making arrangements for former President Donald Trump to resume outdoor campaign rallies by surrounding his podium with bulletproof glass, multiple sources told ABC News.
The measure is typically used exclusively for sitting presidents, but the Secret Service is making an exception following the first attempted assassination of a presidential candidate since George Wallace in 1972.
The Secret Service declined to comment on its use of ballistic glass.
Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said the campaign does not comment on security measures relating to Trump.
The Secret Service recommended that Trump stop holding outdoor rallies last month after a gunman in Butler, Pennsylvania, fired at him from a rooftop 400 feet from the stage, nicking his ear. A man in the crowd was killed in the attack.
Since July 13, Trump has held nearly a dozen campaign events, all of them indoors.
Trump has privately expressed a desire to campaign outdoors and has sought assurances it would be safe, the sources said.
At a rally at an indoor arena in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on July 31, Trump complimented the size of the venue then told the crowd, "They'd prefer that we be in an arena. I don't know why. But we're not giving up the outdoor rallies. You know, all those people that we had to turn away today, at an outdoor rally you can have."
Trump's protective detail is preparing for glass panels to surround him on three sides, according to the sources -- though it's not immediately clear when that would start.

Vice President Kamala Harris is out with a string of new economic proposals focused on food prices, taxes, housing and medical costs that she says will empower the middle class.
The plans constitute the first major policy proposals that Harris has released in the nearly four weeks since President Joe Biden bowed out of the race and endorsed his vice president.
After years of polling showing that Americans are worried about inflation, Harris is aiming to contain prices where they have often been most conspicuously felt — at the grocery store. She's promising to, during her first 100 days in office, send Congress proposed federal limits on price increases for food producers and grocers. Harris also is seeking new authority for the Federal Trade Commission and attorneys general in states across the country to enact steeper punishments for violators. She also wants to use government regulators to crack down on mergers and acquisitions among large food industry businesses that the vice president argues have contributed to higher prices.
Harris is calling for the construction of 3 million new housing units over four years, which she says will ease a "serious housing shortage in America." She also plans to promote legislation creating a new series of tax incentives for builders who construct "starter" homes sold to first-time homebuyers.

Canada won a gold medal. Australia became a meme. At times, even the commentators weren't sure what to say.
Love it or LOL it, it's safe to say breaking's debut made its mark at the Paris Olympics, although it may never return. Breaking — known to many as break dancing — is not on the program for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Yet it's become one of the most talked-about events.
Much of the buzz comes courtesy of Vancouver's Philip Kim, a.k.a. Phil Wizard, who captured gold after dominating his final battle with host-country favourite Danis Civil (Dany Dann) of France.
But it's also in no small part thanks to the performance of an Australian b-girl known as Raygun who did a "kangaroo dance" and scored zero points but became a viral sensation.
Despite some misinformation circulating online, the decision not to include breaking in the 2028 Games was made long before Raygun's performance.
Raygun, whose real name is Rachael Gunn, is a 36-year-old college professor. After her performance on Friday, Gunn posted on Instagram: "Don't be afraid to be different, go out there and represent yourself, you never know where that's gonna take you."
The comments on her post were largely unsupportive.
"I know a lot of people will discourage you but please listen to them," wrote Instagram user "preacherz_son," in a comment with 30,000 likes.
Phil "Wizard" Kim popped and locked his way to a historic gold medal in Paris
Breakers look to capture — and keep — the world's attention at Olympics
She defended her moves again on Saturday, telling the Independent that she tried to be "new, different and creative" because she couldn't compete athletically with her younger rivals.
On Sunday, the head judge of the breaking competition said Gunn was just trying to be original.
"Breaking is all about originality and bringing something new to the table and representing your country or region," head judge Martin Gilian — known as MGbility — said at a news conference. "This is exactly what Raygun was doing. She got inspired by her surroundings, which in this case, for example, was a kangaroo."

The summer of reversals for President Joe Biden continued in dramatic form on Monday as he announced that he now supports sweeping Supreme Court reform. In an op-ed for the Washington Post, Biden pushed 18-year term limits and a binding ethics code on Supreme Court justices — after a long career spent opposing such measures — as well as a constitutional amendment overturning the court’s recent decision granting presidents immunity from criminal prosecution.
Donald Trump on Monday repeated his weekend remarks to Christian summit attendees that they would never need to vote again if he returns to the presidency in November.
But, after being asked repeatedly on Fox News to clarify what he meant, the Republican former president denied threatening to permanently stay in office beyond his second – and constitutionally mandated final – four-year term.
During the initial remarks made on Friday, which caused outrage and alarm among his critics, Trump told the crowd to “get out and vote, just this time”, adding that “you won’t have to do it any more. Four more years, you know what? It’ll be fixed, it’ll be fine, you won’t have to vote any more, my beautiful Christians.”
An election year that was already bitterly partisan has been completely upended by President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the 2024 White House race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. But it’s not just Harris’s late entry that has electrified things. It’s also the history to be made if the likely Democratic nominee becomes the first female president who is also multiracial.
The daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, both of whom immigrated to the U.S. during the Civil Rights Movement, Harris’s historic presidential bid has again put a spotlight on American identity politics and the growing number of people who say they are multiracial.
The national electoral authority had proclaimed the incumbent President Nicolas Maduro the winner of the vote, handing him a third six-year term in office.
But opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez has said his campaign has the proof it needs to show he won the election.
Mr Gonzalez and opposition leader Maria Corina Machado told supporters they had obtained more than 70% of the tally sheets from the disputed election, which they said shows Mr Gonzalez beat Mr Maduro.

President Biden announced Sunday he would not continue his bid for reelection, saying it is in "the best interest" of the Democratic Party and the country to withdraw from the race, and he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the nominee.
The decision came nearly a month after Mr. Biden's poor debate performance in June, which alarmed Democrats in Washington and sparked discussion about whether he could be replaced on the Democratic ticket.
For weeks, until Sunday, Mr. Biden defied growing calls to step aside and sought to prove he was fit to run.
Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the support of enough Democratic delegates to become her party’s nominee against Republican Donald Trump, according to an Associated Press survey, as top Democrats rallied to her in the aftermath of President Joe Biden’s decision to drop his bid for reelection.
The quick coalescing behind Harris marked an attempt by the party to put weeks of internecine drama over Biden’s political future behind them and to unify behind the task of defeating Trump with just over 100 days until Election Day. Prominent Democratic elected officials, party leaders and political organizations quickly lined up behind Harris in the day after Biden’s exit from the race and her campaign set a new 24-hour record for presidential donations on Monday.
Bodycam video of the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey was released by Illinois State Police Monday afternoon, showing a chaotic scene after a sheriff's deputy shot Massey in the face during a tense moment over a pot of water in her home.
Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Grayson has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct. He is being held in the Sangamon County Jail while he awaits trial.
"(The video) is going to shock the conscience of America. It is that senseless, that unnecessary, that unjustifiable, that unconstitutional," civil rights attorney Ben Crump said. "This sheriff's deputy was twice as large as Sonya. Why would you have to use a gun to shoot her in the head?"
South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn said Tuesday that he is fully supportive of vice president Kamala Harris' campaign for higher office and feels good about the party uniting around her, but only time will tell if America will vote for a Black female president.
“When has this country ever elected a woman? We thought we were ready for that in 2016 and we weren’t ready for that," he said, referring to Hillary Clinton’s unsuccessful bid for the presidency.
