The Avalon Village is a sustainable eco-village being built in Highland Park, Mich., led by guest Shamayim “Mama Shu” Harris. The village consists of 20 parcels of land and 4 houses where everything is built with recycled materials and green infrastructure. Created for female entrepreneurs, the village is highlighted by a village hall and buildings made of shipping containers, with the project’s next phase being the construction of the Homework House, which is expected to open in September 2019. It will be a place for children to go after school to do their homework, eat a meal, take a shower, or wash their clothes.

Activities planned include games, bounce houses, an obstacle course, water balloon fights, trivia, health screenings by Henry Ford Hospital staff, bike giveaways, and the chance to see a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter from the National Guard. There will be a tribute honoring the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, and the Michigan State Police will be bringing their SWAT gear, including a dive team and a drone.

Healthy Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods is a community well-being initiative that focuses on social, emotional, physical and spiritual health for residents of all ages. Welcoming Everyone Grosse Pointe (We GP) is a community-based organization that was founded after the 2016 election to resist attacks on civil and human rights. We GP provides opportunities for social engagement, community building, political engagement and activism.

On June 22, 2019, We GP will host their third annual Grosse Pointe Pride March, beginning at Grosse Pointe High School at 10 a.m. and ending at Maire Elementary School. The event will include a community choir and a small gathering with food trucks, with a portion of the proceeds supporting Outserve, an organization that provides resources for LGBTQ military service members.
