  • Gregory Mancini, 40, colon cancer, Scarborough, ME, with Dr. Kimmie Ng (ANG), director of clinical research, Gastrointestinal Cancer Center, Dana-Farber
    Greg was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer in November 2015. He was treated with chemotherapy and is now on a clinical trial at Dana-Farber that involves Immunotherapy, which is a type of cancer treatment designed to boost the body's natural defenses to fight the cancer. Greg has done very well on this trial. Greg is an implementation engineer for Adapt Telephony Services. His hobbies include fishing, camping, hiking, cooking, being outdoors, spending time with family and friends. His family includes his wife, Christy and sons, Tony, 12 and Leo, 7. In 2008, Dr. Ng joined the staff of Dana-Farber, where she is a medical oncologist and clinical investigator in the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center. Her research focuses on the identification of molecular predictors of survival in colorectal cancer patients and the development of novel therapies for the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies. Dr. Ng has done many research studies concerning colon cancer which include studies that show Vitamin D helping to reduce the risk of colon cancer.

  • DH - Jeannie Larson, 57, lung cancer, Merrimack, NH with Dr. Geoffrey (Jeff) Oxnard, thoracic oncologist, Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology, Dana-Farber
    Jeannie was a non-smoker, but was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer after first having pain in her leg. The first oncologist gave Jeannie a grim diagnosis and survival rate. She is extremely grateful to have found Dr. Oxnard and Dana-Farber who, thanks to a clinical trial, have given Jeannie her life back. Dr. Oxnard doctor helped treat her cancer with a new precision medicine treatment called a "liquid biopsy". The liquid biopsy accurately tells whether a lung cancer patient has a mutation that makes the disease treatable. It's also being tested on other cancers. Dr. Oxnard is a lung cancer expert in the Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology at Dana-Farber. Besides treating lung cancer patients, Dr. Oxnard spends a lot of time on research. His current research study includes liquid biopsies. Liquid biopsies are non-invasive blood tests that detect circulating tumor cells and fragments of tumor DNA that are shed into the blood. A liquid biopsy made a huge difference in the treatment of patient Jeannie Larson.

    Rick Crews is the President of AFC Doctors Express New England and Medvest LLC. Rick received his BA in Economics and Political Science from Union College in 1988. He entered into the financial services as a financial adviser in 1993 with Prudential Securities. After the collapse of the markets in 2009, Rick went into business for himself and joined doctors express with his business partner, Jim Brennan, as Master Franchisees, in November of 2009. They formed Medvest LLC which is dedicated to developing and managing AFC Doctors Express Urgent Care Centers throughout MA, ME, NH, and VT. Currently, Medvest LLC manages 6 AFC Doctors Express locations in Massachusetts; Springfield, West Springfield, Worcester, New Bedford, and two Greater Boston locations in Saugus and Dedham. Crews and Brennan plan to open an additional Worester center 2017, and the eight franchisees within the Master territory plan to open three centers this year as well, adding to the 17 locations already open within MA. This kind of rapid growth doesn't come without great focus and intent, which has been recently recognized by Western Massachusetts largest business magazine circulation; BusinessWest. Crews and Brennan graced the magazine's front cover in January 2013 as the 2012 Entrepreneurs of the Year. Crews and Brennan continue to look for additional franchisees in MA, NH, VT, and ME.

  • Olivia Steiner, 3, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a blood cancer, with her parents Christine and Jason, her brother Hunter, 9, and her sister Emma, 8, Burlington
    Olivia was very sick last year and was in and out of different doctor’s offices with several appointments – her parents would not give up until they knew what was wrong. At one appointment, Olivia’s gums started bleeding and both the doctor and Olivia’s parents knew something was not right. A day after Olivia’s 2nd birthday, lab tests revealed that she had leukemia, (ALL), and they went to Dana-Farber right away for treatment – they were told it was the best possible place they could go, with the highest level of care. Olivia’s treatment over the past year has included chemotherapy and steroids. This little slugger got the opportunity to take some swings with her siblings at this year’s John Hancock Fenway Fantasy Day. Olivia loves to spend time with her siblings – they are her rock. Olivia’s family has become so close with Dr. Place as well as her NP Anna Roche Lefebvre, noting that they feel like family that they trust completely. Olivia’s family says, “We want to do as much as possible to give back to Dana-Farber, this amazing place that is saving our baby's life. We have met and become friends with so many incredible families that are going through the same things that we are.”

  • DH - Beverly Sotir, 77, Lung Cancer, Belmont, with Dr.Pasi Janne, director, Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology, Dana-Farber
    Though a non-smoker, Beverly was diagnosed in 2006 with stage 4 lung cancer. Her tumor was genetically tested and a mutation was identified. She was put on a clinical trial for a novel drug that specifically targets the tumor, not the healthy tissue. Many of her tumors shrank 50 percent or more, some disappeared. Her doctors are inspired by Beverly concerning her treatment since she will be celebrating 10 YEARS surviving her initial diagnosis. She has 8 children and 14 grandchildren. She keeps a copy of lung scans in her bathroom so she can yell at them daily. She appeared on the 2010 Radio-Telethon. Dr. Janne's is one of the leading lung cancer researchers at Dana-Farber and around the world. His main research includes the study of epidermal growth factor receptor mutations (EGFR) in non-small cell lung cancer patients. He and other researchers at Dana-Farber showed that patients whose tumors had a malfunctioning version of the EGFR protein responded dramatically to a drug that specifically targets the EGFR protein. The findings launched the era of precision medicine for lung cancer, transforming the way the disease is treated in many patients

    Olivia appeared on your show last year during Radio-Telethon. Olivia was diagnosed on December 30, 2014. Her treatment included 54 weeks of chemotherapy and 50 days of radiation (30 to pelvis & 20 to lungs & arm). She finished treatment in December 2015 and was declared cancer-free on January 22, 2016. Olivia attends Assumption College. Her family includes her parents Mary and David and sisters Hannah (22) and Nora (15). Her hobbies are reading, spending time with friends and family, and watching movies. Olivia's dream is to become a child life specialist and work with pediatric cancer patients. This was her dream even before she was diagnosed. Olivia has had so many amazing experiences at the Jimmy Fund Clinic was able to do some remarkable things and meet wonderful people. She went to Spring Training with the Red Sox, sat in box seats at many games, and went to the Beyoncé concert and had floor seats!

  • DH - Nicole Barrell, 31, breast cancer, Duxbury, with Dr. Hal Burstein, senior physician, Susan F. Smith Center for Women's Cancers, Dana-Farber
    Nicole's husband found a lump in her breast 4 years ago that eventually led to her breast cancer diagnosis. Her treatment has included 4 cycles of targeted therapies, a bilateral mastectomy, 4 rounds chemotherapy and will last a total of 8 months. She selected Dana-Farber, because of its reputation and based on a friend's recommendation. Her hobbies include running, writing, and playing field hockey. She also has a blog. She does web marketing for Boston Interiors and Cape Cod Lavender Farm. Her future goals: be cancer-free and stay cancer free and help those afflicted through volunteering and writing. Nicole wants to run a marathon for Dana-Farber. Also, she hopes one of her embryos she froze turns into a tiny human one day.
