  • OMF - Jordan Leandre, 17, Ewing sarcoma, a bone cancer
In 2003, Jordan visited his doctor with what his family thought was a virus in his hip—but when the pain and discomfort returned 6 months later, x-rays revealed it was more. After ultrasounds, CT scans, MRI, and eventually a biopsy, the family learned Jordan had Ewing sarcoma, a bone cancer. He underwent chemotherapy for 11 months and had surgery to remove the tumor and reconstruct the femur. Jordan loves baseball, from the day he was medically cleared to play, he has worked extremely hard trying to be the best player he can be. He also writes for a Boston sports website. Jordan has participated in many Radio-Telethon’s since 2004 –singing the National Anthem and participating in on-field ceremonies. During the 2007 Radio-Telethon, Jordan ran the bases. Glenn Ordway told Jordan on-air that he should run the bases and not listen to people if they told him to stop. Jordan thought Glen was joking. But then, after Jordan sang the National Anthem, Mike Andrews, then the chairman of the Jimmy Fund, told him to run to first base and then he kept going - the crowd got louder for every base he touched. Jordan plays varsity baseball and is starting his junior year at Barnstable High School.

  • OMF - Brian Kelleher, 40, colon cancer, with Lisa Chicko, RN, Dana-Farber/New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology
After a couple of red-colored bowel movements, Brian had a colonoscopy and was told he had a tumor in his colon. His treatment has included chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. He is still undergoing treatment. Brian receives his treatment at one of Dana-Farber's satellite locations, Dana-Farber/New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology in Londonderry, NH. A lot of people associate Dana-Farber with Boston, but there are other locations. For those that might be coming from the north to get their treatment, there are other locations that might be considered. His family includes, wife, Michele and his sons, James, 11 and Sean, 4. His future goals include putting cancer behind him, living a long life, seeing his boys grow up, watch them dance with their mother at their weddings and hopefully become a grandfather. When Brian first came to Dana-Farber, his nurse Lisa sat down with he and his wife to walk them through his treatment plan and what to expect along the way. Brian said that something with Lisa, "clicked right away." Brian and Lisa quickly found that they had a fair amount in common. Their kids are all around the same age and had quite a few mutual friends. Brian's visits are made easier by Lisa's sense of humor and he is looking forward to the day when Lisa is no longer his nurse so that they can hang out outside of Dana Farber. For her part, Lisa appreciates that Brian is a huge sports fan and says that at every appointment he has some form of Boston sports paraphernalia on. She's been treating him for about 2½ years and loves that Brian's mother, a retired OR nurse, regularly comes to his visits with him and brings the staff the "the most amazing brownies!" Lisa Chicko has been working for Dana-Farber in one capacity or another since 1998. She started at Dana-Farber almost 20 years ago as a new patient coordinator in gastrointestinal oncology. Lisa went back to nursing school and she has been a registered nurse at Dana-Farber/New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology in Londonderry since the practice opened in 2009. As infusion charge nurse in Londonderry, Lisa sees all types of cancer patients, both liquid tumor patients, solid tumor, and hematologic disorders as well. Dana-Farber's Londonderry practice makes it possible to offer the expertise and experience of Dana-Farber, while enabling patients to enjoy the comfort and convenience of staying close to home.

  • OMF - Melissa Capuano, 46, uterine cancer, director of sales, Entercom Boston with Dr. Neil Horowitz, director, Clinical Research in Gynecologic Oncology, Dana-Farber
Melissa was diagnosed in June 2015 after a biopsy. Prior to receiving the biopsy results, Melissa's doctor told her that she should not be concerned because she did not fit the profile of someone who might have uterine cancer. It primarily occurs in women closer to 70 in age and/or obese. They were both shocked that the results came back to reveal stage 1 uterine cancer. The typical treatment is full hysterectomy, however Melissa felt she was way too young to lose her reproductive organs. Her doctor suggested high levels of Progesterone, a treatment plan that has been known to shrink tumors. If this worked, she could potentially avoid surgery (or at least put it off for several years), but this treatment did not work. She selected Dana-Farber for her treatment because her and her husband felt very comfortable and they found Dr. Horowitz to be very compassionate. Melissa ended up needing surgery to remove the tumor to make sure nothing spread to her lymph nodes. She had that surgery in January 2016 and today is cancer-free. She is married to John and has 2 beautiful step-daughters, Taylor and Casey, and a French bulldog named Luigi. Dr. Horowitz is a Gynecologic Oncology surgeon and also the Director of Clinical Research in Gynecologic Oncology at Dana-Farber. He specializes in treating all types of gynecologic cancer but has a special interest in ovarian cancer, vulvar cancer and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN), which is a collective term for gestational trophoblastic diseases, which occur within a woman’s womb (such as uterine cancer).

Arthur believes he is here telling his story today because of Dana Farber, and doctors like Dr. Lathan, who gave him the gift of life. He says, "I was told I was ‘terminal’ and had maybe 1 year to live by an oncologist elsewhere. I never heard that word at Dana-Farber and I am well past that one year. I am ‘living the dream’ every day, all days, bad or good days, happy or sad days because I am still breathing!” Dr. Christopher Lathan is an oncologist who specializes in cancers of the chest, including lung cancer. He sees patients and has published many research papers, mainly on cancer disparities for minorities.
