Did you know that Wyoming was gung-ho about women getting the right to vote? What about New Jersey women being able to vote 100 years before the 19th amendment passed? I talk all of it and more and rerun my interview with Kellidawn Gilliland, school teacher and mom of three boys.
This is our third in the series celebrating the 19th Amendment, it's the 100th anniversary of Women's Right to Vote this week! So we're talking about a little known figure, the QUEEN of the progressive era, Jane Addams, as well as throwing it back with our conversation to the Queens of our own time, the Bloody Bitches, Nayanka Paul and Zoe Vella who are fighting for Women's Rights in their own ways.
I only ever want yellow roses from now on. During the push for the 19th amendment for women's right to vote, the yellow rose was the symbol of the suffragettes, whereas the red rose signified anti-votes for women. It became a way to count the votes in a sort of exit poll. We talk all this more on this episode of Weekly Woman.
It's the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, and this August we're highlighting women from the past and present doing amazing things to help our civil liberties! This week we're talking about Inez Milholland, the face of the Suffragette movement, a Joan of Arc character who led the first march on Washington in 1913. We're pairing this suffragette with Charlotte Coyle, a protestor now who advocates for womens period rights, ending period poverty, and helping women in prison.
