I am aware that I have a tendency to just layer more and more and more on tracks. When I've mentioned 'killing darlings' in previous weeks, this has been a conscious effort to be more deliberate and precise, to make choices about what sounds good and, when something's not right, respond by making changes to what's already there before adding something else in.
I think I have a decent ear for how to make things work as assemblages and/or am bloody minded enough to ignore it when they don't line up perfectly, but something I'd like to do is stop accepting something that's "a bit off" just because that's how the things I've mashed together sound when mashed together.
So, particularly in the wake of last week's frenetic journey of discovery, I wanted to do something a little more laid back, a little more chill, and - dare I say it - a little more minimalist.
I call this result a... partial win.
This is not 'minimalist', by any stretch, but by comparison to my other tracks, there's relatively little happening. Most of the instruments are moving between G#4 and E4, even the more complex sounding stuff given that's largely in-plugin arpeggiation.
For a song made by me, this track has a lot of space to it, a lot of gaps and a lot more... patience, I guess.
Overall, I'm really happy with it as an exercise in (contextual) restraint and I'd play the shit out of the game this was the menu music for :) Which is also why the track ends so abruptly, it *should* loop reasonably well, if you've a mind to do so.
