On holiday so found sound piece really tonight with a bit of beat work in koala. Don’t think I’ve ever heard circadas before but instantly knew what they were from Americana songs I gorged on when I was younger.

6.6.0 Beta blessed us M8 heads with new toys! Started as a project to test the new beta to find bugs, snowballed into this. Title sounds like an 80s scifi anime so it was allowed to stay.

Time is sometime not on your side and definitely not this week for me.

Putting guitars and figuring out bass lines isn’t difficult, but arranging and mixing is time costly and I got sidetracked.

In terms of tracks:

- There are 4 guitars here: 2 panning, one center and a solo.

- You have the bass

- 4 tracks for voice: panning, and 2 additional for the choruses

- One drum kit based on an 808 that I didn’t have time to polish

I’m a bit bummed about this one, it was ambitious and I know I can turn it around, but spending time with the family was more important and weeklybeats isn’t the priority. Next time I might tame it a bit.

At least I worked a lot on my harmony progressions and the mix on the solo is quite good. That’s something.

Eh, it's fine. I would like to think that I could have brought it further, but I am not so sure I have the skills.

This track started with the weird bass, an experiment with building odd sounds with the m8.

The working title was "C#MIXOLOGY", the song being in C# Mixolydian.

The theme for the Red Means Recording Discord Challenge this month is Ambient Techno ("August Ambient" ... techno), which definitely includes Dub techno, so the remainder of my tracks this month are gonna fit the theme.

It's definitely a challenging genre when you're making not-ambient techno most of the time. You have to ignore a lot of the phrasing and builds and arrangement structures that get baked into your brain and try to make some sonic wallpaper that still has a "beat".

This track started and mostly ended on the M8, the only thing added afterwards in DAW was the vocals, and the usual mix adjustments and tweaks. Vocals are me talking to my MacBook cuz I couldn't find samples that worked and didn't really feel like trying to find any online. They are largely just a texture so who cares lol.

As a bit of an experiment I decided to make all the percussion (except the kick) using par samples and little modulation/lfo envelopes. I think it worked really well towards making perc with lots of movement "built in".

I think in an effort to create the ambient techno "ceiling" associated with the genre and a little too much sidechain ducking on my part, this track is tripping dangerously close to being trance or psytrance ... but meh. It's fine. It'll work and on to the next! Figure I'll just pick a fave end of the month when the deadline for the challenge happens.
