Week 32

Goal at start 8/4:

Take periodic breaks to stop and think about how you want the music to sound, and what kind of “genre language” you want to use versus what you're actually hearing. Try to identify as clearly as possible what's wrong and how you want it to sound, even if you don't know what to do about it.

Compare to at least two different tracks in your target genre that you can say “ my song sounds like this”, or at least articulate mentally what you would change to make it sound closer to that.

Well, I feel like I made almost a song. This week was a casse where I scrapped about 4 different melody ideas before landing on something that was at least halfway passable.

This is good because one of my goals this year has been to not just make one idea and run with it, but make multiple attempts at multiple ideas in order to intentionally move closer to a desired outcome.

A "fun" track with only 2 chords (A quick loop of drums and guitars that was captured with Niko in the rehearsal local). It was captured with 2 mics, one Room on pointing to the drums (loads of guitars on that track) and a closed mic on the guitar cabinet that is fairly well isolated.

I did find fun to go the "Synth" way so I did swap my drums for e-drums for part of the track, added some synth-bass, some synths and just messed around with the elements.

I am leaving for about 10 days, will try to recharge the batteries!

Fitness journey, another week "off" because of the knee. (Not totally off, I did about 3hrs of bike). Not checking anything food wise, so Weight is going UP! about 93kg. Knee is still a bit painful, but feeling "strong".

Look, I know this isn't a proper english word. Naming is hard.

This started off as a sound exploration (I wanted to figure out how to do the Bass sound from Saian Supa Crew's "Polices") and then the chords turned it into something else. Ideally, I'm imagining an Anderson .Paak voice croaking over it, but the simple lead melody will have to do for now.

I had tons of fun digging through the record crates of your mind this week. I tried to make the whole song out of them. Some of your ideas were used in small pieces to add color, others were warped and distorted into entirely new things altogether. It's pretty great to give someone else an idea and just see what comes from it.

This is yet another HAMJAM with D-Car on the rhymes and Mafooo on the horn. This is one of a handful of songs we have done together as a group, and they seem to get better as we go. Your samples are now a part of that story, too!

Not at all what I had planned when starting up the m8, but as it often happens I ended up converging to a "video gamy" music. I tried to use some randomness in my sequencing effects. Everything is synth based.

Giant Waves, or Weekly Beats, but it's Giant Steps

Back to pure synthesis this week.

Drum machine made out of DMX and Drumulator samples for that crunchy 80's lo-fi digital sound.

Synths are U-He Repro and a lot of Dune 3.

Two concepts this week.

One was to use the John Coltrane Giant Steps progression although I dropped the II chords to make it a 6 chord progression rather than 9.

Cmaj7 -> Eb7 -> Abmaj7 -> B7 -> Emaj7 -> G7

The challenge being that it has a constantly shifting key centre so to write a melody you have to follow the chords you can't rely on a scale.

Challenge two was to do a time signature change and then do a fake out and look like you were going to do another, but actually continue in 4/4. The first time around the B section is in 6/8 and the second time it's in 4/4.
