  • Week 27 - Jackmsimpson - How Long (Turn the Page)
This was last week's original track - mostly written and recorded, but pushed to be finished off this week. Really wanted to have a powerful, big finish and I feel I achieved this on the most part.
A few little bits here and there to maybe work on - feeling my vocal melodies are a little stale now and my next task is to look at more adventurous vocal ideas - harmonies included.
I have often thought fade-outs to be a little lazy, but it's weirdly what I had envisioned for this track when I decided on the looping ending...
Thanks for listening - Have a great week!
    Lyrics are here:
    Empty motorways
    And red eye flights
    Broken promises
    Try as I mights
    Overflowing pessimism
    Always asking for permission
    Awkward silences
    And staring at the wall
    Oh how long
    Til I believe you
    Oh how long
    Til I deceive you
    Oh How loong
    Another screaming match
    A makeshift bed
    Got no sleep again
    Need a clear head
The bottom of the glass is raised
    Pour Another anyway
    Silent mealtimes
    Nothing to say
    Oh how long
    Til I believe you
    Oh how long
    Til I deceive you
    Oh How loong
    Turn the page
    Rip off the band aid
    Fade to black
    The final chapter
    no happy ever after
    The way you meant to
    The way we meant to
    This way is meant to...

  • Week 27 - LeCroqueMonsieur - Bass harmonies #1
Bought a new bass and wanted to try it out. Decided to go for very minimalistic submission this week. Took me less than an hour to put it together (also missed a work call while doing it T_T ).
I went ahead with a slow bass bringing the melody/foundation, had the guitar do the drone and have another bass through bringing another melody.
They blend in tandem as the track progresses, since they don’t have the same length.
This might be my month’s project, to focus back on the bass.
    It’s chill, I like it.

    › technique‹ technique
I had this weird idea this week, given that nanoloop cannot use effects/plugins
    1. load a sample in a channel and make a pattern
    2. clone the sample channel and slightly detune it
    3. push the start offset for the second channel slightly forward
this creates a phaser + delay sound

  • Week 27 - Minnamari - Butterfly Ancestors
This is a collaboration between two different versions of me, spanning years - starting with lyrics my 20-year old self wrote into a black notebook and ending with freestyling by my now 35-year old self. Realizing how much quirky, dark writings I have in these old notebooks that never got a place to land, felt nice to collaborate with that earlier version of me. The song ended up somewhere I had not anticipated, but it makes sense to the overall frame of mind I am cultivating - with appreciation for life as a whole while not taking it all too seriously..
    › Lyrics‹ LyricsHello there!
"Jump through the window, you'll die sooner" you told me, and I tried
I took the first best window, the one in my bedroom, and I dived
But the window was too low to the ground
And soft grass was all that I found
And I wasn't dead just yet, so
The next thing I tried, was pills bourbon and wine but it didn't work
Razors, scars, subway trains and cars, or maybe rope
But somehow nothing worked, and I gave up
And then I looked around me and saw
    Hey actually, life is beautiful
And I'm glad I survived that fall
And I don't want to die after all
Then a piano fell down and smashed me
Then a piano fell down and smashed me
    And I was gone
    Or
    Maybe not after all...
    We're never gone
After it's all said and done
    It's not actually done
Not even if a piano comes down and smashes you from outer space
Maybe the astronauts were playing piano or an
Alien who enjoys some music, and
It came into orbit around the earth and then the gravity
pulled it in and smashed me
Well it's a silly song, but maybe
Dark humour provides a blanket of comfort
    for us weirdos
    Enjoy the life you have
Or if you can't enjoy it, you know, it's ok
    It's still life
It's all life, even death is life
    Somehow, like the
    Butterflies are my ancestors
just because I feel it's so
