  • Week 24 - Snyderman - TED and Dave
Had to rush this one but still learned a few small tricks.
Furnace Tracker as usual, this time using the "TED" from the Commodore 16 (1 Square + 1 Square/Noise) and the Dave chip from the Enterprise 128 (3 Square + 1 Noise). 6 channels total for a lot of square wave heavy dance music. I've used each individually in WB2024 but decided to put them together more for the name than anything. It's something I guess

  • Week 24 - alonemusic - Repeated Resonant Figures
Strap in, this one has *background*.
Up front, this is a short highlight reel of an 8 hour improvised live performance that I was asked to join earlier this year. The performance took place in Zagreb, Croatia on 12 June, and was easily the oddest, but most creatively fulfilling thing I've done in a long time.
The idea was that I would create a soundscape that would respond to the artist, who was mixing live performance and stop motion animation into a durational piece. How on earth do you do this? And make it interesting? Well... let me explain.. First was a vague structure, this came about from the idea of cassettes loaded with a vague arc of the history of chat bots (more on that later). These ended up about 6 hours of found audio from a number of sources, mostly using TTS to read out transcripts, but with some older documentaries from the 60's - 90's. These tapes formed a narrative of sorts, but could also be looped and manipulated with the live rig I was also building over time.
Live rig? Well.. that was also a project in itself, a few tracks this have had odd ambience, drones etc in them, this is mostly me working out how little devices work. The end setup included 4 Bastl Kastles, a 'Rumble of Ancient Times (RoAT)', Roland S1, Winge2, and a lot of effects pedals. This all came together with a set of light sensors connected to LFOs that my workmates helped me build. This was really playable and let me sync lots of various gear together.
    ^ the live setup (mostly)
From the piece we ended up with a 1:20 stop motion animation, I recorded about 4 hours of the set, but have trimmed this down to this 'track' and a 20 minute version that is on my Bandcamp.
    ---
"In 1966 the first conversations between people and chat bots took place. The most famous framing was that of therapist and patient, with the chat bot, ELIZA, taking on the role of DOCTOR.
It’s creator, Joseph Weizenbaum, used what at the time was an advanced method of reflecting back the users input, twisting words back in the manner of Rogerian therapists to ask deeper questions about the motivations behind the inputs.
Once the script is revealed as a program, the illusion falls away, however the foundations of even the most modern large language models hark back to the parsing of user input and reflecting back what the user wants to see. These mirrors adapt, learn, repeat, regurgitate. They take our style, they model on our preferences, they pull on the experiences shared.
When we are faced with mirrors that talk back, that re-enforce our self, we enter into a downward spiral. Affirmation machines designed to become a poisoned well of ultra-processed information.
As more and more people seek confirmation of their truths, the nature of our relationship between us and our devices is subtly adjusted to not just our own preferences, but those who control the machines."

  • Week 24 - Tom Foolery - She worked in an elevator
I feel like these past few weeks I have been flying pretty close to the sun with social commitments, work, running training, and gigs. I've been noticeably tired, and I have even noticed myself struggling to put my thoughts into words at work and when with friends. It's meant that the weeklybeats have been taking a bit of a backseat (although I'm still getting them done! Just!). Planning to slow down a bit these next few weeks and refresh.
This week I spent a bit of time working on the one I submitted under Walter Normand. Please go and listen to it if you have time. I'm quite proud of the synth-work and the drums, although the vocals needed more time. I sat down to quickly write another track before heading out again, but decided it suited this profile more. This piece is a reflection on my grandmother who recently passed away after suffering from dementia for many years, though this piece doesn't do justice to her at all. I wish I had known her better when I had the chance.
Otherwise, life has been busy but good. I have seen the following gigs in the last few weeks:
    - Wednesday (on a Monday strangely enough! Very rowdy crowd! When Karly screamed at the end of Bull Believer it brought tears unexpectedly to my eyes).
    - Cate Le Bon (very cool, very groovy).
    - Daniel Avery (a visual and sonic feast, although a very late night for this sleepy guy).
    - Clipping (UNREAL. How does he know so many words and how can he say them so fast? and the production??? so good. Amazed I finally got to see them).
    - Iglooghost (very warm room packed with many bodies. Insane electronic sound design. Reminds me of the music I used to desperately want to make - it's funny how we change).
Otherwise, I've been looking at trying to move closer to the area of the city my life seems to revolve around. I'm spending a lot time driving back and forth which is wearing me down a bit. HOWEVER, a friend made me a mixtape CD recently, and that has been a lot of fun to listen to in the car. So many interesting tracks I had never heard, and beautifully curated. Choosing where to live is both a rational choice and an emotional choice. I'm a very rational person, and my pull for moving is largely emotional which has got me in a weird sort of spot. I also worry that I'm fantasising about it a bit and it won't be all I have built it up to be. But there's only one way to find out??
    when you were younger
    you worked an elevator
    the envy of your friends
    if I'd know I couldn't have
    asked you about it later
I would have asked you then
about how often would you say
    things were going up?
how many pounds would it take to weigh your
    pockets down?
when I saw you the next time
    you didn't know my face
take the bark from the ground
    and back to your place
    you wouldn't take a bite
until there was something on my plate
half of what we gave to you
    you always pushed my way
