  • Week 22 - Nueli - Soudain, rien (shitty bass cover)
HUBRIS was in PROMO this week. Or maybe it's the heat wave? It's Saturday, after an exhausting week and at the start of a busy weekend I take my bass and try to cover my own song from last week. After all if we don't defy the gods once or twice who are we?
So it's Saturday morning. Black skirt on and fan blowing on my back to help with the heat. My bass is jurry-rigged to the M8 via my amp (using the headphone jack) to record the two melodic lines and the percussion. then it's editing time, selection, normalization of each note, effects, a bit of mixing. I guess what I lack in chops I made up for in courage?
Ideally I would like to make at least another song using my bass this year. I like the instrument. I just fail repeatedly to start a consistent practice schedule so it sits in the corner of the living room, reanimated for a few weeks each year as if I were a necromancer.
Anyway. I hope you have an excellent week. Yes you the reader reading my exhausted brain vomiting words on the keyboard. People here continue to amaze me, each week there are new musical treasures to discover. So hydrate, call your loved ones and make music!

  • Week 22 - Dank Receptor - Fussy Trioxide
2000: Found two dead cheap and broken C64s in a weird, dirty second hand shop. They were abandoned in cardboard box on the sidewalk, and I figured I had to rescue them.
2009: Ordered a MSSIAH cartridge with plans to make some SID acid on the 64s.
2026: Actually started repairing the computers. Desoldered a bunch of chips, put in sockets, fucked around, learned stuff, bought replacement chips, and had RESULTS.
The first machine to be revived was a C64C with a 6581 SID. Sounds fun (and great for most applications), but not very good for the MSSIAH Bassline acid.
The next one was a C64G with an 8580 SID. And it sounds absolutely excellent as a TB-303 cousin!
Here's a quick little squelch jam along with an 808. Spring reverb/Mackie/Analog Heat dirt on top. Just some whatever patterns and traditional drums, hey ho let's go to town.
I really like how closely the MSSIAH implemented the pattern programming of the TB-303. You can bash them out quickly, don't even need to have a monitor connected when you memorize a few button presses.
Recorded live to stereo. Edits for coolness. VULF compressor for chunk. MIDI knobs for synth tweakage.
Good times, thanks for checking in. Peace!

  • Week 22 - Ashtom - Athena Rising
This week saw the release of a new album from a very influential band to me: Boards Of Canada (BoC) released Inferno this Friday. I took the train on Thursday evening to attend to one of the many listening parties that happened around the globe that day. It was a great experience, all these people moved by the same sound in a sort of religious gathering. I really enjoyed it.
I was then very much inspired and I made this week's track on my way back, in the train. Then today, I made the arrangement and proceeded to the recording. This time, I took more care in how I recorded. I went through several ideas, but in the end, I realized that the sound of BoC is a savant melange between lofi textures and hifi beats. So instead of recording everything on cassette like I usually do these days, I mixed cassette recording and direct export from the Deluge into Reason (like some kind of parallel processing).
The cassette recording followed my usual practice but this time, I really committed. I created a version of the track at double speed with a master transposition of 12 semitones (and without drums), recorded at full speed, and then played back at half speed into a Zoom H1n recorder. That recording was then added to the normal mix where I turned down the volume of the hifi version to make more space to the lofi textures, but I kept the drums hifi and at full volume.
I think the result really shine and is worth the effort. And bringing all this effort makes me more convinced of the quality of the final track.
So here it is, a track inspired by Boards Of Canada, in celebration of the release of their new album (which I already love by the way). I hope you'll like it, and if you do, please let me know!
    Have a nice week everyone.
