  • Week 22 - muhamor - grid pondering times
    Hello!
    › Production Notes‹ Production Notes
This week I'm taking a break from future bass studies with some DnB breakbeats. I started with the GRID_171 break at its full BPM. I chopped it up into 8th note slices and mostly played it through with some variations and layering with DnB rebellion one-shots. Then I started pulling in samples from the M8 jungle pack that was shared on the M8 discord last summer and threw together the different sections. Interestingly, this track is entirely composed with samples -- no M8 synths here!
Technically I also used some vocals (human and bird). I'd love to get some more variation into the sections, but there's also no more time to do music stuff this week :).
    Thanks for listening!

  • Week 22 - Mamoriya - Safety Valve
It's entrance exam season where I live and I've been extremely stressed. This song was quite literally made to cope - I feel like I would've gotten several aneurysms if I didn't do music to chill out. The secondary purpose of this track was to learn how to use sample packs for more than just drum loops, hence the unusual-for-me BY-NC-ND license - I don't think I can release this under BY-NC-SA in good faith. I'll be back with more copylefted music next month.

  • Week 22 - Minnamari - Mind Gone
Enough ramblings, it's time for music...
I have been working on season 2 for my Mysterious Studies podcast, and challenging myself to actually let people know it exists, sharing clips and posts.. But with all this, I am eternally reminded about this beautiful dance between purpose and purposelessness - something that feels meaningful one moment can feel like a bunch of pointless ramblings the next. Podcasts are a lot of talking talking talking. And this chatter of mine is often of a mental character. It has it's place, but, after this week of being exposed to my own chatter so much in cutting clips from the video, I could use a little break.
This is where music comes in - a counterpoint - an opening - an inviataion - an opportunity to create space beyond the purely mental (though there's plenty of music that can be very mental indeed)...
In either case, hope you enjoy this song that helped me lose my mind for a bit.
My voice breaking from time to time is a feature, to inspire you to share your music no matter how "imperfect" it may feel to you.
Your music could just make someone else's day.
    › Lyrics‹ Lyrics
    My mind is gone
    A balloon in the air
    Up in the air
Is there someone who could get me down from here?
Oh, it was such a gorgeous sight
    Letting go without a fight
No mind, No thoughts, No worries
No longer need to hold a light
    (eh...let's see)
You can go on and so can I
    No need to question why
What could be and what could not
And what I thought should have been a lot
No longer any way to know
I drop the oars so I can't row
And there it goes, and there it goes
    So let it go
    Sometimes a-
    Sometimes a mindless existence
    has its place
But what are we? What am I, if I'm not a mind?
    If I'm not a mind?
I don't mind, I will find some way to be
that's for me, that's right for me.
What's right, says the mind, says the mind, and
    I don't know
    Just be kind (?)

  • Week 22 - cistern stairs - rainbow shards
    goal at start 5/27:
Experiment with solving the "second loop problem" by give extra care in choosing sounds that compliment the sounds in the first loop. See if a melody arises from that easier.
    end notes 5/29:
Most of the clarity issues I encountered on this one arose from melodies being too hyper active at one point or another. I spent a lot of time removing notes here and there so there was space for everything to fit together.
    plan for next week:
I think I'll go back to what I was doing a couple of weeks ago and reference other songs that have layers I can follow along with and try to replicate some things from those.

  • Week 22 - EME - Parting Gift
Weird one this week, I made this small jam as a sendoff to my beloved Digitakt which I am inevitably selling. I wanted to try pushing it to its weirder sounding territories as such using the delay for karplus strong and some overall spacey reverb. Enjoy ;)

  • Week 22 - HexDroid - Phonkosaurus
This is the last (ever?) sample-slop I have made. BandLab took away my rights. I will be switching to another DAW after this.
Also expect a very long compilation with almost all my BandLab stuff from last July to now.
    Thanks for listening!

  • Week 22 - 52beats - Mrythms
Ableton Note exploration continues. I have been impressed by what I can produce in it with its limited controls.

  • Week 22 - Earp Lug - Rainy
This piece is a combination of a few different recordings that I made this week. The intro was created as I was messing around and preparing for an extended jam that I planned to be about 20-30 minutes that I would created visuals to for my Video Sketch Archive - https://www.youtube.com/@sc0o0tt
I was interrupted by some door-to-door salesmen selling me some garbage I don't need, and the recording ended up only being a few minutes long. I thought the intro, which was performed on my Sonicware Liven Ambient 0, was pretty cool, so I EQed it into oblivion and it actually sorta sounds like a piano (originally it was just raw wave forms I think).
The next part was this cool rhythmic space I found on the Ambient 0 a few days later. Every time I pressed some keys, the filter would reset, and so I played an ascending and descending melody on it for a little while.
The third part I created specifically for this song once I had combined the first two. I messed around with preset A.55 (because it looks like a naughty word on the digital screen), and added some delay into the patch alongside messing around with the cutoff, resonance, attack, and release. I really like playing notes into a delay, so it allowed me to make some repeating melodies. I tried to play this one in a higher register so it wouldn't be combatting for sonic space with the other recordings, and I EQed everything to try to separate their sounds a bit more.
The visuals were created by filming during a very rainy day. The camera's screen made everything look extremely muted and gray, to the point that I wasn't even really sure what it was aimed at for a lot of the recording, but I added in a ton of contrast in post that also brought out some nice saturation and allowed me to actually figure out what the heck the camera had been pointing at the whole time.
