  • Week 20 - Daisy - Regret
Just finished watching the admittedly dystopian series called The Man in the High Castle on Netflix.  It was a very ambitious undertaking to make this book by Philip K. Dicks into a streamed series.  This author also wrote the book called Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?(Later the movie Blade Runner).  I remember (as a humble Kroch's and Brentano's bookseller in the early 1980s) getting many calls special ordering this book. The title cracked me up-- and I did read it.  It was not as funny as one would think, given the title--pretty grim.
There is such profound regret in many of the characters in The Man in the High Castle. I salute Philip K Dicks for his daring and his imagination. I don't regret watching this series. It was quite well done.
My piece for Week 20 begins with a repeated riff, that gets more agitated as it is embellished. It ends violin in sul tasto (over the fingerboard) and cello on a low C.

  • Week 20 - JaiClone - Cherry Blossom
I wrote the original base for this song in 2012 on guitar, and even did a demo in Pro Tools! It was super rough though (it was my first proper official DAW), it had two acoustic guitar parts and two vocal parts, no panning, no eq, no comp, awful balance (harmonies as loud as the main vocal), etc. I think the only colour I used was a subtle reverb. Also, the verse lyrics were very mid...
So here is version 2; tidier, better production, somewhat better lyrics(?), and I switched out the main guitar for piano (mostly out of laziness). I carried over the 'lead' guitar bits from the original, tinkered with the sound a lot, but in the end I think I was just not liking that it sounded like an acoustic, so maybe I should have used an electric guitar or an instrument track. Oh well...
Overall, it somehow ended up both basically how I imagined a refined redo would turn out, while also not being quite what I expected. Go figure...
The strange thing about trying to focus on completing my older stuff this year, is that it is reminding me that in my more mature 'just get it done' subjective approach to my music, it turns out there is a lot of material that once filled me with a hopeful 'this song could be a hit!' buzz that stirred up the emotions, now just gives me an 'I mean... it's fine, I guess...' feeling. Ironic; now that I have the means and the motivating challenge to finally do something with all this material I have gathered over the years, I just don't feel the magic anymore that used to burst out of me when I would perform them live :/

    Week 20 "LDTB"
Low effort weekly cheat upload before a hiatus is not quite how I pictured it but yea I'm burnt out from WB and demoralized from the time restraint.
Luckily the universe's cards are in my favor for once and it comes right intime for us to move into our new place.
Most excitingly having a room dedicated as a music studio.
With that said, this unfinished idea of a song is from 2025. Ironically, created one year to the day of today. Is rough, at 16-bit audio, and its a little wonky but having my old HDD I can reboot some older ideas in the future. This being one potentially.
photo of my studio setup in the apartment before I shutdown and start packing it up.
This setup was in our reptile room next to our Cali-king "Day-O", Horntail "Harold", and Tegu "Zilla.
    *not pictured* our beardie "Sushi"

So I'll leave everyone with my one year old demo with bad audio :P lol
I hope everyone continues on their journey, progressing along the way.
    Cya next time on...Weekly Beats!

  • Week 20 - cTrix - NES Life (Live from Nintendo Entertainment System)
Prototype live performance software for the Nintendo NES.  Basically, it's LSDJ for the NES... and it's f''king awesome!!  (more about it to be announced soon)
Played live at Melbourne Chiptune Academy with Woz (front of house engineer) doing some additional filters and FX for me because no one brought a DJ mixer! (ooops!)  This is straight out of the Nintendo audio sockets of a 1988 era NES model 01 (PAL).  It's performed in the semi-developed live mode and written about 50% on the actual hardware and about 50% in emulator when I made it.
I was demoing the software for the first time at Melbourne Chiptune Academy with a screen to the audience, so really flaunting my live skills in it - sometimes jumping phrases a bit early... but that's techno house for you!  Enjoy.

  • Week 20 - Crash Overture - Erhu and Vocalization experiment
Back from holiday came back feeling pretty revitalized. I discovered after I left Iceland that they have their variant of a fiddle, and I will need to get one sometime.  I realized I can't take my Ipad out of airplane mode yet, because I had a show downloaded I want to watch. So no garageband, and I was not doing that on my phone.
Used my phone to record and played with my erhu (the one I got back in February) while vocalizing and then cut it up, slowed it down, layered shit, played with effects, and made this little thing. I do not play ehru well,(still learning)  so it's an open D and A with a bunch a noise because singing and playing is something I can't do. But whatever, it was fun and I learned a few things. Also didn't realize I create a high pitch noise sometimes with the erhu during recording which I have no idea how to fix, but now I know and can figure it out. So something to work on while playing and recording.

  • Week 20 - Tone Matrix - Chlorophyllian
    › notes‹ notes
I wish I had better news and felt like this was a productive week but alas all I have are few of these chords.  Two Afib episodes this week and currently in one as I type.  Woke up this morning with it and have been stuck since. I probably would have added a piano melody but honestly I couldn't concentrate on anything because of the intensity today. Mayhaps next week will have a bit more variety.  Thanks for stopping by.
