  • Week 18 - horatiuromantic - Cup of tea
Cup of tea! It's a cute little song inspired by a HUGE RAIN that caught me on the way home just now. I passed by a beautiful flowery tree in the crazy rain, and the blooming branches were hanging low due to the extra weight, so I had to hit the branches with my head as I biked under the tree. The smell was awesome!!!
I was on my way home from an open mic (CPH Listening Room) where I played a couple of songs, it was really nice to be back there after months!
It's a quick and dirty but surprisingly good sounding track. Started on it around 00:00 so almost exactly 2h of work from idea to final product! I wrote the lyrics first in about 40min, and I am sure I stole the groove from somewhere but idk where right now. Hopefully there's enough new going on in the compo that it's not totally plagiarism. In any case if it is, it's unintentional, but let me know if it reminds you of anything!
I tried to play it on acoustic at first, but then I figured let me go with electric. Messed around with virtual amps but eventually the best sound was from my Roland Cube amp, clean, plus a spring reverb, thru the line out. I thought I would strum it the whole way, but after MANY attempts on the guitar, I landed on this kinda bossa type fingerpicking (not sure what to call it) with the occasional strum when it gets more intense. I think once I practice there is a really cool thing I can do to play the melody on the low strings as I accompany myself.
I did takes of the guitar until it was good enough (2 takes stitched together), then the vocals, then the santana style fills to make it a little more full. The fills are literally the last thing I did 5 minutes before the deadline so I didn't even have time to listen back. I'm very happy with this composition!!! CRAZY that I almost gave up again on making something this week.

Would you like to come with me
    for a cup of tea?
It's ok if you don't want
    or you're too busy
I can feel that we can have
    a really good time
Cause you've been on my mind
                      on my mind
On the way it starts to rain
    very terribly
    Luckily we snuggle up
    under this big tree
I can feel you close to me
    or is that a flower
    From this blooming tree?
    Oh what a good tree
Oh I really love this tree
    What a good good tree
      we found...

  • Week 18 - mukti - ONE23
Super late this week, started this with an hour and 23min before the deadline (which is where the name came from). Not much to say about this - I pulled together some stems I made over the past few weeks, chopped up some vocals and tried to mix it well enough. Definitely not the best track I've made, but continuing to submit weekly ✊
The pic is a frog I saw in my yard while doing yard work today 🐸

  • Week 18 - laguna - Rockin'
Finished rendering less than a minute before the deadline. I managed to bring back my beloved Plogue Chipsounds plugin back from the deepest corner of the closet.
The lead was introduced less than 10 minutes before the deadline, so not much time for variation. Also, it needs a proper fade out.
All of this was made on a 4GB RAM Macbook Air from 2014... This machine is a little slow for some tasks, though Ableton Suite 10 runs quite smoothly.
Samples from the horribly pretentious "Kilroy was here" introduction movie from the equally pretentious band Styx, 1983.

  • Week 18 - Tomatron.Jones - Vox Secunda (ft. Erika Gersten)
Another week to use Weekly Beats as an excuse to do more voice practice and recording. This started with a grimey percussion loop from a song from the band Holy Fuck that I then recorded some percussive vocals on top of. Did some more recording with Erika mostly focused on percussive and weird stuff. Ended up with dozens of vocal tracks on top of some crunch drums and synth. I ran out of time on the arrangement and mixing, would have liked to get more time to clean it up and add some more dynamics, but it's kinda fun. A very sort of tribal sound with the percussive parts to the upper-register belting screamy parts parts, reminiscent of Tanya Tagaq.
    * Voices recorded via Shure SM-58 through Focusrite 4i4
    * Synth with Ableton Wavetable and Bass instruments
    * Drum and percussion samples from Splice and voice samples
    Total Time: 5.5 hours

  • Week 18 - miraclemiles - Coconuts for the Queen
I think the two movements of this one are: 1 - procuring the coconuts, 2 - presenting the coconuts to the queen.
I have decide coconut is my favorite word of today. The word of the day where when it's said we all scream (anyone remember Pee Wee's Playhouse?).
I have coconut milk in my coffee, and that will do. I'm queen for today.

Took last week off. Started something last Sunday. Wasn't feeling the motivation, kind of made my head hurt. Nice spring day. Went outside instead. It's what I needed more.

This week I had some rhythms in my head. Got ideas down on Saturday motivated me to finish on Sunday. Also thought about going outside instead, but I'm glad I finished. Feels good. Still time to go outside later. Really enjoyed just playing around, doing whatever, letting it happen and not trying to make it into normal song. The Ableton project is set to 6/8, but I kept tapping all these parts on the Push that don't really align to the grid perfectly, and had odd bar lengths. Getting weird and flowing feels good. Coconuts. Aaah!

Looking forward to catching up on your music this week, let's go.

  • Week 18 - uhhuh_absolutely - Cocoon
Recorded a fun drone with lots of filter modulation and distortion, was going to make this an ambient piece and then decided to add a beat on my Perkons. Recorded an arp on top of that and some sax to blend into the texture. Would've liked to have added a drop into another section, but instead I spent a good part of my day playing around with Touch Designer in an attempt to make some visuals. Didn't end up with something I liked yet, but hopeful that I can get it to a good point soon.
Going through a blah period where I'm altogether pretty unmotivated, but thankful to have this challenge to keep up with!
Edit: finished a weird little visualization!

  • Week 18 - Stenny - Caustic Fermata
Worked myself to the bone this past week, pushed myself too hard for too long a stretch, and left very little time for this composition - so that's what this piece is about. It's about thinking you can just keep muscling through something and brute forcing it, but letting the engine run on hot for too long. Sustaining the grind as it grinds you down. It's basically just delay and distortion smut, but gently guided through a series of phases. Used a bespoke Max MSP delay patch which pushes its feedback loop through an external track which I loaded up with all sorts of goodies that I automated around. Given a little more time, I would have brought down the initial dry instrument's levels a little since it does kind of dominate versus the main cloud section.
