  • Week 18 - endojo - Decent Inside
Crawl out of your own mind once in a while. The colors are bright. The sun is shining. It's a nice life outside of the dark.

  • Week 18 - MRDRCAT - My Little World
It was originally titled My Empty Room, but it's too happy for that kind of emptiness. This one started out with the opening loop getting stuck in my head, and (finally) I managed to expand it out. I'm actually happy with how it ended up. It's all M8 and all original synth patches except for the snare and kick - both of those are in the Samples From Mars essentials pack if you need them.
This one was odd - I wanted to add a second lead, something I could use for a very obvious C part, but adding it messed up the momentum of the track. It felt like I was diverting all the energy into a black hole, and I wasn't able to land it. So I pulled all those parts except for the 8 bars I used for a bridge. The project is a mess, BUT I had an idea...
Since this is one of the weeks where I would normally submit the track both to WB and the M8 Community Jam (it's a thread in the M8 Discord), I duplicated this project and substituted all the parts featuring the first lead with the stuff I had written for the second lead. Since the theme for the jam is "Crunchy", I added some bit crushing and generally dirtied it up. Apart from the lead swap, some different synths, and a couple notes adjusted in the bass line, both tracks are the same. Unfortunately, as I was working on the Jam version, I realised the "second" lead is the stronger of the two.
Anyway. At the last minute, I added the little bass solo. This meant I needed to add one to the Jam track as well, but I had already duplicated the project and started messing with it, so I just did a different bass solo for that one. Hopefully even though they are basically the same track they sound different enough to be interesting.

  • Week 18 - walternormand - Dust in the contacts
Quickly fired up my synth to write a quick noodle as per last week.
When I did, something happened to it, and all the digital controls started reading like crazy, and all of a sudden, the init patch became the main patch you hear on this track. It literally roared to life. A very happy accident.

  • Week 18 - Daos1 - Echo Machine
This song was originally going to have sounds from a speak and spell thing my dad had, which used a computer generated voice reading out words. But while making it I realized it sounds way better without it, so I just deleted that track.
Is it showing this song twice in my profile list for everyone or just me?? It's been like this for ages and it shouldn't be showing twice I don't think. =/

  • Week 18 - Tom Foolery - Is there an echo in here?
Running very late on this one. Not necessarily due to a lack of time, just procrastination from a lack of inspiration I am afraid.
It has been a pretty good week overall with some ups and downs. Some lovely bike rides and runs. Battling impostor syndrome at work. Bike rave, and watching friends play a gig. Watched the Devil Wears Prada 2 at the cinema. A day in the testing lab at work. Spent today wandering around a gallery and finding some places in the city I had never explored. After riding my bike yesterday, my hand had not been feeling 100% so no guitar this week sadly. Thought I would try something different and make a track with the ableton stock plugins! Not overly inspired, but a fun challenge! Making synths and vocals fit together is much harder than guitars for me for some reason.
Hoping I have a bit more time and inspiration next week but I'm powering on through!
    clip my wings
    and I'll yearn to fly
    give me the truth
    I can't help but lie
    face to face with my
    self again
    clean the mirror
    I can see it clear

  • Week 18 - maksy - Inperfekt
This week I invite you to join me in a moment of reflection. Take yourself the three minutes of time and listen to all the little imperfections in my playing. Hear how I get more and more relaxed while playing, giving in to the fact that this song will not be perfect, but part of something bigger. Something I can't control. And that's okay.
I hope you all have a great week :)

  • Week 18 - freezedream - Trinity Kids Song
This week is a collaboration with my good friend Michael Morrow (melody and vocals).
We're working together to make a fun new theme song for our church's kids group!
Lyrics by Stephen Urmston and Michael Morrow
    › Lyrics‹ Lyrics
    verse
We love, 'cause the Father loves
We tell what He's done for us
We live for the glory of His name
We ask, that is how we learn
We learn from the word of God
We live in the world that Jesus made
    pre-chorus
    And when we're together
    Jesus is here
    chorus
    We love
    We tell
    We ask
    We learn
    We're living for Jesus
    We're living for Jesus

  • Week 18 - Mamoriya - Senselessness
    ご無沙汰しております。
This is not a track made with much love, but it's more of a test of two particular things:
    - Can I still write music after a 3-4 week break?
    - Can I sound design effectively without Serum 2?
The jury's still out on the first one - I feel like the composition and arrangement are severely lacking - but maybe I'll come around to actually liking this track in a few weeks.
The first half of the drop was mostly Massive. The second half of the drop was mostly made using the Poly Grid in Bitwig. I still rely heavily on plugins for OTT/spectral compression (not to mention spectral clipping), but I'm getting a lot better acquainted with Bitwig's stock devices.
