  • Week 16 - Ashtom - A Slice Of Live
I have been spending most of my week either working at my job or rehearsing for the live set I performed on Friday. On top of that, the whole weekend (when I usually record my weeklybeat) was plagued with headaches and migraine.
So, as a consequence, here an excerpt of the recording my live set from Friday for the Synth Club at the KuBaA (Zürich Affoltern). I think the response was positive and people seem to have enjoyed it. I was a bit bothered by the monitoring speakers that were probably too loud and that made me worried about the sonic balance, but eventually I think it sounded quite okay.
If you are a familiar with a certain japanese ramen chain, you may recognize one of the sound used in this week recording...
In other notes, I was thrilled with the Nine Inch Noize concert at Coachella and also excited about the coming of what seems to be a new Boards Of Canada album (finally)!
I wish a very nice week!

  • Week 16 - mukti - ZWEI
I'm not really happy with this one, and it was pretty rushed. I didn't have a ton of ideas this week, and built on top of some stems I made while I was watching the most recent M8 Discord Meetup. I wanted to make a cyberpunk-type track, but didn't really get to a sound I wanted, and kinda melded two different tracks together. Still appreciate any feedback! All of the vocals are quotes from Metropolis spoken through Microsoft TTS.
The name is just the German word for "two" since I was basically unsuccessfully merging two tracks together with this one.
The picture is just the side of a shipping container/truck that I saw on the side of the road, heavily modified.

  • Week 16 - levelcapybara - die ente
Another SaGa Frontier 2-style sketch. Renewed appreciation here for old-school Hamauzu, because boy are these challenging for me to write. 😬 Hamauzu nailed a very specific blend of classical / minimalism when he worked on SF2 - repetitious but not tedious, busy but not cluttered, shifting without meandering. Can’t say I’ve hit those marks with these sketches yet, but I’m learning a lot by trying.
Pop quiz: was ist die ente?
    Happy Week 16 everybody!

  • Week 16 - KaZu - Need You
    Hi everyone! :)
This week was kind of crazy…
Quick summary of my vocal workflow:
    - Adding vocal 1 — not 100% convinced
    - Removing vocal 1
    - Adding vocal 2 — not 100% convinced
    - Removing vocal 2
“Okay, let’s just do a pure instrumental track…”
Suddenly, a wild vocal chop appears.
Oh wait… where is my vocal 2? Ahh, there it is *throws it back in*
And somehow, the track finally comes together.
That’s the kind of madness you definitely want on your weekend. ^^
Here’s my entry for this week — hope you like it!
    Have a nice day :)
    Cheers
    KaZu
    P.S.
As always, I’m really grateful for any constructive feedback, opinions, and so on :)

  • Week 16 - coolsa - Doomed Feedback
Recently watched the "behind the music" of doom, which is a very good presentation. https://youtu.be/U4FNBMZsqrY
Mocked up a similar setup in sunvox, as best as I could, and just played around with a bunch of sliders with a midi controller. Fun!

  • Week 16 - Lizenn - Sextant
Okay so this week may be on me... I got caught in a pretty deep Windrose addiction, being a sea shanties and pirate lover, and this game being...a pirate mincraft... That got me pretty bad. I enjoy it a lot but it didn't help AT ALL except in making me go through a sleepless night killing boars and chopping wood. So I wanted to make a little pirate speedtrash in the spirit of a battle phase ! It's not good but making it during a two hours Windrose break (I'm going back on the seas right after this post...) is satisfying enough !
I recorded all the instruments by myself (even the voice chorus, but you'll DEFINITELY notice there's only one voice haha ! I need to learn the hacks to make better chorus voices !)
Also I'm so very sorry, I've been very quiet and didn't respond to a lot of comments on the 3 past weeks, I'm deeply sorry about it. I read it all, and I thank you all very much, I just didn't had the strenght and the mental to answer you all. But I will definitely do it at some point ! So sorry, and thanks again !!!
Lots of piraty love, mateys ! All hands on deck and let's sail !

  • Week 16 - JaiClone - My High
So... this is an odd one...
The intro guitar is an idea from 2018, so I started building around that with a chorus/change, vocal melody and lyrics. As the theme emerged, I recalled an old idea along similar lines from... some time prior to 2008-ish (before my ideas had timestamps).
When trying to merge them, the first obvious note was the 6/8 feel vs the 4/4 feel, plus a key change, so I thought perhaps they were incompatible. For science though, I transposed the older part to fit the newer part so it would only have a rhythm change, but it felt a bit 'why change rhythm if staying in key', so I then tried them both together in their original forms, and for better or worse, I decided to stick with that.
I'm not confident that it works particularly well, but after so many songs over the years, I'm trying to be less safe and generic and giving some unconventional ideas a go, while also shifting two older ideas from 'idea vault' to 'finally did something with' status.
    Slow mind
    Red eyed
Hold me 'til I'm myself again
    So long
    Too strong
Please don't leave while coming down
All I want is a rest from my mind
There's far too much going on in there
Through my despair I crossed a line
The chaos is too much to bear
    Low, high
    Losing time
    Wave after wave of uncertainty
    I'm tired of
    This ride
I'm ready to remember myself again
All I need is a rest from this mess
The medicines make it all worse
Build a tolerance for better effects
So I can be free to inverse
    Don't bring me down when
    I'm on a high again
    I don't want to fall
    You're making a sound but
I cannot hear what you say
    Are you here at all?
    Freedom has it's advantages
But I can't feel none of them
When I'm alone with my mind
    Ephemeral escaping is
The focus of all of this
Or slowly implode in my mind

  • Week 16 - embix - Let The Arp Do Its Thing
This week I did a take on one of my favorite songs. Just a few synths playing simple patterns, a lead arp and a (probably bored) drum machine. Did take more time than anticipated but I enjoyed making this one a lot. The mix could probably be better, but at least we're practicing, right?
