  • Week 16 - Cakes - Somber Moon
I tried a little emotive piece this week. This is much harder than dance tunes. :) Huabun, Tone Matrix, and a number of others have been crushing it with the emotive stuff. This influenced me to take a stab this direction. I may have murdered some of the humanity in the melodies by overtightening MIDI in the piano roll. It came out a bit too dry but it was good to get out of my comfort zone.
The opening vocal is Orson Welles via LOC public domain thing. There are one shot samples for the drum, the sub stab, and the random guitar pluck. The main synths are Zenology and Analog Lab plus some reverbs.

  • Week 16 - MAXELL XL3 - blind flight
On Easter Sunday last week, I experimented with the sidechain compression that was released on Roland’s SP-404 Day. I didn’t fully understand the process, but the beat turned out quite well and worked nicely with the guitar loops I created. I also spent some time jamming on the guitar, which led to a very relaxed session with a fading ending. Later, I discovered a children’s audiobook on magnetic tape, which I was able to incorporate into the track.
Overall, the track is evenly split 50% beat and 50% chill.

  • Week 16 - dadboy - Deep Breaths
So this was kind of Saturday night speedtrash - if you see this this means I didn't come up with something better on Sunday :). Fair warning - there's an (intentionally) very loud/abrasive section in the first minute, but it is quite short.
This is way more experimental and a lot less musical than I normally make (and if I'm honest, share, but I'm going to try to continue to be real). I had a number of initial ideas this week, but I struggled to take anything past that stage. I decided to make something specifically designed to reflect an common experience and practice for me, where I experience disregulation and have to recenter and regain control.
The opening section represents the context in which this experience often begins. I (by default) tend to rigidly compartmentalize, and when I get tired and overwhelmed, the strength of those walls weakens and fails. At that point, painful thoughts can start to 'leak,' and that can hit me like a ton of bricks (you'll know that part when it comes, lol, sorry). Even before I started therapy, I naturally had developed a practice of mindful breathing (as a bit of a survival strategy if nothing else), and that's something I continue to employ. The rest of the song is meant to represent that process of my mind and body slowing down and starting to re-regulate. It's not like everything suddenly is fine and I feel all better, but things settle and what I call "rat brain" gets under control.
Anyways, I have a lot of feelings about putting this out (I have arbitrarily high standards for myself that are hard to define and I struggle to feel like I've met them), but I promised myself I'd make every week and I don't have anything else and it's Sunday so wheeeeeeeeeee. If nothing else this is still authentic and maybe reflects an experience others have. Be well!

  • Week 16 - ramenuse - Appetizer
Hope you enjoy this week's appetizer & my attempt to try writing midi for instruments (guitar in this case).
These past weeks I have been only what stock ableton has to offer and I'm learning to get by with just that, it's quite fun!

  • Week 16 - Michael Morrow - Moment By Moment
Okay, I recorded this week's song on my phone at the piano in church, after everyone had gone home late on Sunday night. It's not that I didn't want to put time into the recording, it's just that I spent so much time writing this song there was nothing left. But I'm pretty happy with what can be by a phone microphone these days!
The song is based on Romans 12:1, the Bible's definitive statement on what it looks like to worship God: as a living sacrifice.
    In view of your mercy
    I give my reply
You gave your life for me
    Now I give you mine
    Moment by moment
    A living sacrifice
    Nothing less will do
    Nothing less will do
    This is my worship
    Day after day
    I am your servant
    Moment by moment
    Lord, make my life
    An image of Jesus
    Nothing is as beautiful
    As walking your way
    Jesus was patient
    And so I will wait
    Jesus forgave
    And now I will forgive
    Moment by moment
    An image of your grace
    Nothing less will do
    Nothing less will do
    This is my worship…
    Transform my mind
    Lord, make me new
    Make me an offering
    Worthy of you
    Holy and pleasing
    Only in Jesus
    All I can give you
    Has come from your hand
    Rain pours from heaven
    When you give your command
    Moment by moment
I give it back to you
    Nothing less will do
    Nothing less will do
    This is my worship…

  • Week 16 - vimster - Shimmer
I was messing about with some reverb and ended up with this. After all these years I really do struggle with more than a few elements in a track, gets too much to manage. I don't like huge productions, to be honest, with tens of tracks and whatnot.

  • Week 16 - Maritalstreep - ZSJ16
A continuation of my industrial beat from last week trying to flesh it into a song. I definitely need to dial back on the clanginess.
