  • Week 15 - Paisleyfrog - Time (part 2: focus)
    Let's do some fusion.
Photo is my grandfather's pocket watch, and my great-grandfather's glasses. This is the book.
Ended up being a bad week for time to do music, and just mental focus for music at all. Even extending to just listening to music - haven't been able to reply to near as much music as I've wanted to. Y'all are awesome, I'll get to it eventually <3 Track is so-named because I just didn't have it this week - thus the glasses in the cover art. Walked around the house and grabbed a few things for the picture.
Since it was a low-time and focus week, I thought it might be be good to revisit the Time idea and the hardpan. I continued with my work on the sampler, and used something RPLKTR mentioned - I sampled the hardpan as both a one shot and multi sampler instance. I then used the MIDI arpeggiator to build some rhythms for it, rather than trying to play it this week (just not enough in the tank for that). As such, I also enlisted a Logic Session Player for the e-piano.
When I finally got to work on it, I started out throwing a lot of stuff at the wall and getting nowhere. A dozen tracks that I was trying sculpt into a song. Dr Frog eventually came down and listened for a bit, and encouraged me to simplify and just vibe...and also that I should use Celtic flute this week. It helped a lot, gave me a direction...I was WAY overthinking. Things started to come together with the bass. I started to think about Chuck Mangione, tracks like Bellavia and Fun & Games (and which is why I went with fusion as the genre).
Got things pretty much settled Saturday morning, and then spent way too much time tweaking the mix Sunday. Flute fought me - it's way breathier than I'd like (which largely comes down to my technique - I'm out of practice). Added the penny whistle last minute on Sunday afternoon, I liked the ending bit of variety. Hope this sounds ok, I didn't get as much time as I'd like to really finalize the mix.
Ultimately pretty happy with the track for not having much in the tank this week. Call it done and let's move on to week 16!

  • Week 15 - Coldsushi - Future
This one started completely different, I was going for a way more aggresive track but after playing with the vocal I steered into this more melodic avenue, maybe also because I listened to the latest fred again live set, full of emotional songs, mix between old and new, but always great music, so I decided to step away from the hard vibes for this week! It was a bit of a challenge but I feel it came out well! Mostly hypersynths with some tricks from the latest m8 discord meetup, fm for the lead, hard part was the mix cause vocals are quite full and composition to blend all the sounds and transitions as well as chopping vocals got me to spend quite some time. It also came out slightly longer than my usual which is nice! After some feedback and also my pondering about it I'd love to keep pushing for something around 3:30 which feels more like a solid lenght, not sure if I'll manage everytime but let's see how it goes. If you have any question ask away! I hope you'll enjoy it and that will make you feel something too <3

  • Week 15 - Tweaklab - Weekly de Beat
Like alot of musos, I've been obsessed with Angine de Poitrine.
I started this beat with the idea of building on a "loop based" guitar driven track, I also forced myself to "play" the drums on my midi keyboard without any adjustments, once I got a few good loops, I looped them as well etc.
The style is really nothing like Angine de Poitrine but the idea of building layers of guitar and bass etc is somewhat there, the shift half way for the break down is very PRIMUS inspired.
I ran out of time to make any variations so I just looped my... loops into 3 minutes or so lol
There's also an attempt at some slap bass!

  • Week 15 - miraclemiles - geese on the bank
Hey hey, another week in the bag. I hope you all are as well as you can be.
Finding some challenge in putting in the work to produce each week, but always grateful when I do. Little steps.
Created this by sitting down with a vague groove and bass line in my head, and watched it emerge from there. Fairly quickly. Used an old song as the starting project so I had some sounds already picked out. Nice time saver and creates some consistency.
Had to cancel an out of town trip this week because the senior citizen doggo got sicker and we can't leave him with a sitter. He's getting pampered. Good old boy.
Still took a few days off work, which is wonderful. We rode bikes in the sun. Looked the river. Hung with some chill geese. Dug some dirt.
    Onward to the next.
    Happy Spring!

  • Week 15 - Jackmsimpson - Changing Sides (Grin and Bare It)
Following on from last week's crazy four song idea week, I spent most of this week working on the ideas from last week that didn't quite get finished. This one is more 'typical rock' I suppose, so something a little different from what  have been uploading so far.
Tried a few different things with this one, experimenting with vocal harmony again - still figuring some things out, but it's all part of the process I suppose.
Some beefy Les Paul tones in this one for the guitar work - as a Tele player normally, I find using a Les Paul, or most Gibson style guitars makes me play in this kind of style.
As always, please leave any feedback in the comments - been listening to a bunch of stuff on here this week and I am always amazed at how cool and diverse, and supportive, this community is!
Have a great week! Thanks for listening!

  • Week 15 - chiptunechester - Groovin' (on Sunday)
Just submitted my first song to WeeklyBeats! A 3-minute chiptune song that I started about 2 days ago. Composed in FamiTracker with the 2A03 soundchip and 5 channels of the Namco 163 expansion. Later, added an outro in HertzDevil's fork 0CC-FamiTracker as well as some minor changes in the mix. Then, applied some bass and treble in Audacity!

  • Week 15 - Suhpos - Time Crystal
One of the first bits of music equipment that i bought was a Waldorf Blofeld synthesizer. For the longest time i thought it was broken beyond repair, the screen used to light up but then show nothing... but then recently i tried turning it on and suddenly it was working again??? Weird when things kind of fix themselves. Well it is sort of fixed, it can make sounds if coerced. Actually this thing is kind of cool. I found out that there is a setting for keytracking on the oscillators and i have been wanting to make some microtonal stuff for a while now, so this is that. Really liked the process here. Having the ability to zoom in and out on the notes using the keytracking is really a cool thing, and i think it gives a huge amount of freedom when it comes to tonality. I have no idea what is going in that regard, but i think it kind of works, though my taste is a bit messed up and i can tolerate most things so i don't know. Could have been longer i guess and i didn't find a good ending.

  • Week 15 - Celio_Morya - Not A Circle - Barking Dogs
This week was particularly challenging in terms of work and finding the time to create something for Weekly Beats. I only managed to sit down today, and even then it was already in the end of day.
I did end up putting something together, but I didn’t have enough time to properly refine the arrangement or mix the track better. Still, I’m really pleased with what came out of such a short session.
I called it “Barking Dogs, inspired by a Portuguese proverb: “Dogs bark, but the caravan moves on. That pretty much reflects the process—I just kept going. I quickly built a few sounds, put together a kick and bass, and grabbed some samples for the percussion. Everything came together very fast, but in the end, I managed to finish something—and this is what I’m sharing with you today.

  • Week 15 - alonemusic - A Ritual For Abandon
Distracted and tired sums up this week me thinks. It's been a strange one. I've picked up a few new bits of hardware for... reasons.. but I started well with a little acoustic noodle. This bookends the track, but the rest very much felt like changing stations on an old radio, hence the static samples throughout the track.. It felt apt, if a bit on the nose.
So, new hardware tho! The only things I used on this track were an FM/AM radio to get the static and odd noises, and a cute lil synth, the Behrigner UB1. My CDM Meeblip SE bit the dust this week and might be proper dead, so it was lucky I had a new toy in the post.
I also picked up a Kastle Bastle (or a Bastl Kastle actually.. ) but I'm yet to dig in...
Anyway.. more about the track? hmm.. I guess it feels a bit messy to me.. it ended up with a lot of layers, and I didn't have much time to mix them, I also tried to really bring the kick drum and the synth washes forward, but might have over cooked that.. but I do still enjoy it.. late night static for a late night world.
