  • Week 15 - neon liminal - after, in the dark (the alley behind the club)
Sorta long song warning. WALL OF SOUND WARNING. Also lots of text part four. Also part 4 of Titan City Nights. Also starts off fairly narrative-foley-esque with the sound of techno playing at a club but don't be fooled. Or maybe be fooled. It's fun.
This week was a struggle. Part 5 may have to wait a week depending on how shit goes.
    › story‹ story
Same night, wrong club. Wrong crowd, wrong music, I just can't escape tonight, brain working over time, the pounding rumble of techno just won't push me out of my head, and the place stinks of sweat and metal shavings and not in the way I like. The others like me just aren't here tonight. They weren't at Cowboys either; *he* wasn't at Cowboys, our shared cigarette, the glint of his eyes and that smile all I can remember him by, didn't get a name, barely saw his face, but I'd know him again to see him.
We always know each other when we're near, it's survival, it's desperation, sometimes it's love.
Out in the alley, dance music muffled by synthetic concrete and the ever-present rain, sheltering my steps under the leaning overhang of the scaffolding above. Still hours to go before dawn, out of work for the night, running out of opportunities. Anything to quell the numbness. Anything to dampen the memory of the yellow sky.
I start climbing a fire escape, wondering if I might get a chance to see the stars before the night is out, when I smell that cigarette again, spiced with something it shouldn't, smoke lingering up through the iron. More steps on the steel, and an unmistakable silhouette smiles at me as he joins me for the rooftops.
Few more hours to go, maybe not for nothing after all.

This is another edited live performance with semi-modular/modular gear:
Subharmonicon makes its inevitable appearance on bass chords
ASM Hydrasynth on an analog-sounding pad accompaniment
Moog Grandmother on Bladerunner-esque lead that sorta didn't work out
Pulsar-23 doing its thing with the big booms and phantom fog horns
Various effect pedals and modular effects
Recorded to a 1010 bluebox eurorack version.
Again, a struggle. Could not get a patch working on the hydra that I liked, and then decided I wanted a slightly jazz/blues sound and got he Subharmonicon to fill in the base layer for that, with Hydra on some pads. Grandmother had a sorta overdriven flute sound which sounded nice but I couldn't get the legato working the way I wanted so 90% of what I recorded went into the trash. Two takes, second was like 18 minutes long and I edited that down to half the time.
Arranged in DAW after in a rather slapdash fashion, with piano and some other elements added there alongside the usual ambience. Schedule for this stuff just isn't working.

  • Week 15 - onezero - Blue Mountain
Having used the $60 Univox Coily hollowbody in an ambient session this past Monday, I thought to use it for this week's piece. (The last time it appeared was also in a piece that ultimately acquired a blue title: Great Blue Hill. Ah, well. Odd for a red guitar.) The tuning for this guitar is (as usual) an extended range Bb F Bb F Bb C, or a dropped and tweaked (at the high side) version of Fahey's C tuning.
Going into this tax-finishing weekend, I didn't think I had much in the way of ideas, and maybe that's the case...but perhaps it's enough: this slow piece, almost four minutes long, still seems to end a bit too soon.
Friday night I tracked a few things, starting with the first theme you hear, which turned out to be in 6/4, so I carried that through the piece. There's a mix of slower and sparser with a few more up-tempo sections, some with partial-barre chordal accompaniment. (As the tuning is fifths-heavy, it lends itself to a power-chord thing with partial barring.)
No pedals, but some convolution reverb send and the usual compression-eq-limiter chain on the stereo.
The title comes from PA highway 641, which crosses a pass in Blue Mountain.

  • Week 15 - LeBernd - Doing life for the first time
This was not what I had in mind when picking up my guitar sunday morning to start writing. Somehow, whenever I start playing riffs on my guitar, I go for this uptempo riff-heavy kinda style. My first time writing some rock music in a while. I think the riff is fun, albeit kinda repetitive over time. This was all made from scratch in a day, so there's only so much I could do until I became too tired for new ideas. Could use some ear candies and synths maybe, but that's not happening today. Nevermind the lyrics, I mostly just wanted to sing something, so I'm just happy I could come up with something vaguely coherent. A little angsty maybe.
Recorded with my guitar and bass in Studio One 5, drums programmed using Addictive Drums 2 from XLN Audio (Kit: Fairfax Vol.1). Threw me back to my very first attempts at writing my own music back in 2009 (I think), with MAGIX Music Maker 15. I had been playing drums for a few years back then and loved writing parts for me to learn OR that were entirely unplayable. I also realized that, while rhythm came easy, it was kinda tricky to write chords and melodies using trial and error, so I started taking guitar lessons to learn writing around that time as well. Good times.

  • Week 15 - skkmkk - A Beacon Of Calm
With this song I would like to point out that the current mind state after recent events and people in my life is like a calm safe beacon.
60/120 bpm aether aesthetic chillwaves with some mellow breaks chopped with Amigo and a simple "test run of my latest peace of gear, Cyclone Analogic Drum Drone TT-606.
It was a pleasure to build these laid back beats.
