  • Week 14 - ixotli - Spring Thaw
Spring is finally creeping into being here in the PNW
Unfortunately for me that means more sinus headaches and migraines
I wanted to see how far I could push reverb on the flute, guitar, and bass samples before it gets too muddy
Side benefit is learning more about Supermassive
    Notes
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
Produced on Dirtywave M8 and finished in Reaper
    Length: 2m12s
    BPM: 70
Genre: Dungeonsynth (definitely the ambient side of the dungeon cistern)
    Samples
    - All samples from Erang's tomes of free samples
    FX
    - Added Valhalla Supermassive to everything
    - Dunked the master in Arturia Tape Mellow-Fi to dirty it all up

  • Week 14 - NineRowBlooms - Not long in Geelong
Emergency speedtrash made on my phone in bed this morning during a weekend away. I made the beat in iELECTRIBE then overlaid it with a Syntrx drone I found on my phone in the imaginatively titled app Multitrack DAW. Now that I listen again the drone doesn’t fit AT ALL so I don’t know what I was thinking but it’s what I have so here it is.

  • Week 14 - roboctopus - My 90s Sample CDs Will Go On
Uhhh. This is an experiment. I got one of those MPC Samples last week. Kind of an impulse purchase. It came out, I watched a video, and ordered it on the spot lol. I have been wanting a portable sampler and always wanted to try MPC, so yeah. It's a super fun device, and it's very easy to use, so I'm pretty pleased with it. I am finding I can't do some things I want to do easily (like glitchy abrupt stop/starts) but I think that's more of an MPC workflow thing and not this device. Stuff I could do easily on Octatrack has me scratching my head with this thing a bit haha.
Anyway, I loaded it with a bunch of the cheesiest most 90s sounding sample CDs I could find and paired it with LSDJ for this week. this is a live take, just the game boy manually synced to the MPC and running straight through its input. (manual sync=I pressed play at the same time lol). The MPC has a compressor and a "pumper" effect for sorta sidechaining so the LSDJ is running through those. Kinda cool.
I've never really tried a track like this--it's sort of a chillout/vibey track I guess? I honestly can't tell if I think this is a demo, or if it does exactly what I want it to do and is finished. Lol.

  • Week 14 - miraclemiles - own story told
Getting a little weird and experimentizing this week. Set time contraint today - create sounds for an hour. Edit for any hour. Creating and editing bleed together. I went over a few minutes, but a good experiment. Not sure how I feel about the result. I'll come back later and decide. Words from some poems I wrote and read on stage at an improv show Friday night. Recorded a few lines from those that caught my eye today, then chopped it all up and played bits at random. Played some drums, grabbed sounds quickly that caught my attention. For many of percussive textural sounds, I used a sample of cocoa being stirred in a cup that was provided for this week's Disquiet Junto project: Cold Chocolate — The Assignment: Turn a shared sample into something refreshing — disquiet.com/0744.
Happy April, hope you all are doing ok. Look forward to listening to some of you music this week. Thanks for being here!

  • Week 14 - evanericksonmusic - Kissed Me (TWICE!!)
Took a short hiatus from writing music for the last couple weeks. I hadn't really gotten my head away from writing music since last August, so I was starting to get burnt out and it felt like I could not glue any ideas I had together into anything more than a short loop. I have also been in a lot of pain, particularly my head, stomach, and eyes. It's been hard to be motivated to do anything more than rest.
But, I have still been messing around with some sound design and loose sketching in the background. This one turned into something pretty good! I have been trying to use these clips of my friend talking about her first kiss since she sent them to me. A few songs have a pretty altered version of this in them, but I finally found a setting that fits with the story she is telling.
This is pretty much all M8 instruments besides her and some drum samples! I've really been enjoying making chiller, more simple music (by my standards). I have never written anything like this that vamps on a good groove, and I think it goes to some really fun places. My uncle, visiting for Easter, said he got goosebumps from it!
Thanks for listening. Hope you had a good Easter if you celebrate!

  • Week 14 - waziam - TOU
Cheers to One Hit Kill collaborating for putting down the bars for this one.
It's been a lot of fun and an education, can't wait to catch up again.
This got darker than it ought to, I blame the weather.
