This was made simultaneously for M8 Community Jam 058: Strange Geometry. I've seen a lot of media about weird architecture that is bigger on the inside than on the outside, so I thought I'd try the opposite: a space that is continually shrinking and simplifying.

This song does a number of things to try to simulate the idea of a shrinking, simplifying space, from reducing the reverb room size to simplifying the drum programming over time to simplifying the chord progression. I'm fairly proud of the chord progression, which at its most complicated goes like this: Cmaj7 Aaug / Dm9 Am7b5 / G7sus4 / Gm7 E7

Am9 Em7 / C6 Aaug / F6 / Fm7 G7.

For the vocal glitching, I made liberal use of Erik Tinberg's LFO Stop Grabber technique for the Dirtywave M8. See his blog post for more detail. I'm sure even if you don't have an M8, this will get the gears turning for weird LFO manipulation.

This song has the biggest gap between what I wanted to do and what I was actually able to accomplish since "Lullaby for Solla Sollew." C'est la vie.

Another one done on the quick using one of my Cubase templates.. The filter does the heavy lifting.

The lead sound having a bit of a G-Funk vibe,  the title came as an epiphany since we have our own ''Compton'' in Quebec.

It's in the countryside of the Eastern Townships region - slightly less charged historically than Compton, CA - , but they do make a mean cheese there!

› Go Fish‹ Go FishSunday morning I was pretty sure I was going to have to skip the week, until I had time to boot my M8 in the evening and was greeted with last week's abandoned track. The mix was in heavy need of some tlc and it required a bunch more variation. It still kind of loses its way near the end, but the deadline be callin', arrrr ye landlubbers.

Made on the Dirtywave M8, some scrappy-last-minute-mastering™ in Logic.

No obligations is what I wish I had this week. Finally had about an hour and a half to get this stood up. I've been meaning to try a major key dub techno thing, and while this doesn't quite cut it yet, technically it is that.

Very simple patch - Monumatic and Helical on a simple chord progression, Manis on bass, with Nautilus and Starlab providing delay and reverb.

Inspired a bit by listening to more hip-hop lately. I've never considered myself a hip-hop producer in any means, but I have written a good few songs that are inspired by it, as it is a genre of music that is very close to me.

First piece with my last piece of new gear for the year - the Elektron Analog Four. Honestly, I really dig the sound of the device, as my first analog synth. It's a bit harder to get a sound I really really like, but every so often I'll hit one, and it puts a smile on my face each time! Just a very comfy sounding device when it clicks. Unfortunately motivation kind of crashed once I finally got time to write something, and the learning process inhibited the writing process, so I just threw together a few patterns with a few of the instruments I came up with during the process of toying around, strung them along in a way which didn't feel totally disjunct, threw some fun little howl-y P-locks down, and called it! The name comes from the fact that this weekend my parter injured her foot, so I've been hanging indoors with her and my cat, which has grown a little stifling but we've made do! I don't anticipate my next piece being super mind-blowing either since I've got a small trip planned that I'll need to work around, but at least I've hit a reliable weekly stride!

My time in Bilbao slowly comes to a close. Indautxu and Abando are parts of the city, and this lyrical idea was in my head even before we went this year. The rest quasi wrote itself. Quite unconventional instrumentation with soft sounds for me but it felt right this week. D minor saved me for having the notes of my impromptu melody that I invented on a metro ride, and also the B (Bb for the Americans) that stands for Bilbao.

› Notes on the collab‹ Notes on the collab

BarristerPlong and I had been talking for a few weeks before.

Sunday, my collab planned for the week had to reschedule, too bad (another time!).

Soooo, I knew Mr Plong was a M8 user, so I just jumped in, ask Mr Plong on Monday if he wanted to go for it.

"Yup. Let's do it", he said.

And, oh boy, the mad man, he went berserk on both our collabs.

We followed the same Exquisite Corpse formula we used with Neon Liminal on last week's track (check out his great write-up).

Everyday, we'd swap project bundles between his and mine.

Everyday, I'd be amazed by what he added and how he transformed our tracks.

He's got that slight refreshing madness that I lack.

Also, Mr Plong is such a versatile, jack of all trade musician, I had no idea what to expect.

And he didn't disappoint!

Not only he's got talent, but he's also a workhorse, thus the two combined really got things rolling good.

Basically, the b-section (we had each other start for our track) is all his.

Not only did he adapt to my style, but it was also his first time cutting up a break beat like that.

He did such a stellar job, it had such a great groove and melody that I only touched things up veeery slightly.

I must say, Mr Plong is a great artist, just a bit too humble to my taste.

Just say the word and I'll collab with you again anytime!

Lastly, I feel really blessed that all of these talented people humor me with making music together and be allowed to grow as a result. 🙏
