Really tried to rein it in a bit this week.  Went for a more funky offering and tried to avoid falling into anything formulaic.  I got my bass set up recently and started writing this ditty on it.  I crafted a very rudimentary beat and synth track on my M8 and then recorded the bass next.  I plan to revisit this again someday with some lyrics.  Nothing earth-shattering, but I'm really trying to get as many ideas out there as I can.

Welp, this is the most last-minute weekly beat I've done so far. Started on it a few hours before the deadline. I knew I wanted to use my Perkons for melodic parts and route the FX send to my little modular granular/delay rack. All the synth sounds come from the Perkons.

Got a take of me jamming on the Perkons after setting up a few tracks I liked, record a couple takes of sax over it, brought it all into Ableton and squished it into an arrangement. Threw kick and snare over a few parts too. The mix could definitely be refined, but happy with it overall given the time put into it!

I had originally started making a song using a Sega Genesis synth but the abrasiveness of it didn't match my mood.

This is a weird one. It's more an atmosphere than a song. And all the rhythms are dissonant. Really, I remembered a synth I had purchased over the holidays and never used and was having a lot of fun with the new sounds

I was a bit sad and just played some chord progressions with a polyend synth preset and worked further on it in Ableton.

I was massively over-optimistic in terms of time and ultimately failed learning orchestration and scoring.

This week's (public domain) blues vocalists are Bessie Brown and George W. Williams, a husband-and-wife act from a vaudeville background. It's really worth listening to the source track "Double crossin' Daddy" (1923) to appreciate how―with split lines like, "(her) if you don't watch your behavior / (him) you'll have to use your rusty old razor"―those acts must have gone.

It's hard to dig up reliable information about Bessie and George, because a) there's very little biographical information covering them apart from their recordings, and b) for the better part of a century both have been confused with more famous namesakes, including "The Original" Bessie Brown (another "classic female blues" singer from the same era), big band musician/composer George "The Fox" Williams, and another (non-musical) George W. Williams (ground-breaking historian).

A question that one of our researchers asked the other week stuck with me: Why doesn't it feel the emotions it once felt? It stopped me completely in my tracks. What emotions have I not felt in a long time? Is a wide range of emotions healthy? Are memories worth keeping? If we have to leave the past behind, will we not learn from it? If we do not look into the future, are we unprepared for it?

Hmm... this one seems to be called, "Leave It All Behind". Interesting. We will share more soon.
